21st Century Learning• Cunard has been selected as a pilot school
• We will promote the appropriate and meaningful use of pocket technologies (cell phones, iPhones, iPods, etc) to support curriculum outcomes.
• It is not acceptable to use these devices during instructional time for non-academic use (texting, phone calls, games, internet searches, etc).
• Students may use these devices during non instructional times (i.e. lunch).

A Typical School Day • 8:00 Early Morning Gym
• 8:30 Breakfast Club provides a nutritious start to the day for students who have not had breakfast
• 8:40 Students enter/Go to Lockers/Homeroom/Attendance
• 8:50 Classes begin
• 11:50-1:10 Lunch/Peanut Freeo pre-order pizza on Wednesdayso Students who stay for lunch must remain on school property.
Students who live nearby may walk home for luncho extra help, clubs, intramurals, library or outside
• 1:10 Afternoon Classes begin
• 3:10 Dismissal/Extra Helpo Extra help is available most days after school until 3:40,
students are encouraged to make arrangements with their teachers as needed.

Attendance• Attendance is essential for academic success.
Please be sure your child attends school every day.
• Let us know in advance if your child will be absent due to a medical appointment.
• Please call the main office (479-4418) each day your child is not well enough to attend school. Students may not call the attendance line themselves.
• Students are under the jurisdiction of the school from the time they arrive at school until they leave at the end of the day.

• If your child must leave school mid-day, the student must sign out in the office and must have parent permission.
• If your child is experiencing school anxiety, please contact the guidance counsellor so we can work together to try and resolve the issues.

Lates• Students who arrive late in the morning and
after lunch must report to the office for a late slip.
• Students are expected to be punctual for classes throughout the day.
• A pattern of lateness can affect academic success in much the same way as absenteeism.
• Chronic lateness may result in loss of school privileges (ex: extra-curricular activities, dances)

Student Fees
• Students will be required to pay a $30.00 student fee at the beginning of each school year ($50 maximum for family)

What about lockers?• All students are assigned a locker and a school lock
to use for the year.
• Students may not use their own locks.
• Locks and lockers are the property of the school, damage or loss must be reimbursed.
• School administration has access to all lockers.
• Lockers may be inspected at any time.
• Lockers and combinations should not be shared.
• Students should keep their lockers neat. Locker dividers are a worthwhile investment.

• Staff reserve the right to address the issue of student clothing.
• Students will be asked to change clothing that is considered inappropriate for a school setting

Extra-Curricular Activities
Teachers believe in the value of extra-curricular activities for students and devote many hours of volunteer time to provide a wide variety of activities including:

Dances• CJHS hosts 5-6 dances per year.
• Dances cost $7; a canteen is available
• From 6:30-9pm; Parent chaperones welcome!
• Chaperoning staff can not leave until all students have left; we appreciate parents being prompt when picking students up.
• Student must be in attendance on the day of the dance in order to participate.
• Students who do not follow school expectations may not be permitted to attend (ex: chronic lates)
Dress code is in effect at dances.

Guidance at CJHS• Our guidance program is designed to assist with the personal,
social, educational, and career development of our students.
• This is accomplished through classroom activities, speakers, conversation with students, their parents, and outside professionals.
• The confidentiality of the student is maintained, unless the student discloses information that suggests harm to them self or someone else.
• Programming includes assisting students in developing self-advocacy skills, small group work for social skills, and coping strategies.
• Conversations with students generally focus on conflict mediation, organizational skills, self-advocacy and assertive communication.

Scent FreeCJHS is a scent free environment.
Students are not permitted to wear heavily scented products including:o deodoranto shampooo no perfume or cologne
Students wearing such products may be asked to wash the product off and/or change their clothing.

Valuable Items
• Students are strongly encourage to leave valuable items at home.
• Students should not leave any valuables in the locker room or unattended.
• The school is not responsible for lost or stolen items.

Supply list• Supply lists will be posted on the

• Expect that your child’s teachers may require a few additional supplies in September (above and beyond the supply list).

PTA and SACCJHS has an active PTA that generates many
funds for the school from which students benefit.
Two main fundraisers include:• Christmas Craft Fair• Wine Fair and Silent Auction
SAC will be looking for grade 7 representation.Late Arrival volunteers are also needed.
Volunteers are always welcome!
