• Paying Social Calls– Families make calls to other houses to

become acquainted with those around them– People often used the practice of calling to

gain entrance into an elite social circle– People left calling cards at a house they

wished to visit– The mistress of the house then decided if the

family would be allowed to visit

• Dinner Etiquette– The meal is served in several courses,

beginning with soup.– It was very rude to eat loudly, one must eat as

silently as possible– The hostess must never praise the meal; she

must leave it to her guest to comment
