History• Lagos State was created on

May 27, 1967 by virtue of State (Creation and Transitional Provisions) Decree No. 14 of 1967.

• Lagos was Nigeria’s administrative capital until 12th December 1991 when Abuja became the seat of federal government

Government • The state was/is

administered either by a Governor under civil rule or by Military Administrators in military dispensations

• Lagos State is divided into 5 administrative division, which are further divided into 37local government areas

Geography• Lagos state is the smallest

state in Nigeria, with an area of 356,861 hectares(3,577 sq km) ,yet it has the highest population, which is over five per cent of the national estimate. The state has a population of 17 million.

the Federation. It shares boundaries with Ogun State both in the North and East and is bounded on the west by the Republic of Benin.

What is Urbanisation?

• It is the shift from a rural to an urban society, and involves an increase in the number of people in urban areas during a particular year. Urbanization is the outcome of social, economic and political developments that lead to urban concentration and growth of large cities.

The specifics• The UN estimates that at its present growth rate,

Lagos state will be third largest mega city in the world by 2015 after Tokyo in Japan and Bombay in India.

• The rate of population growth is about 600,000 per annum with a population density of about 4,193 persons per sq. km

• In the built-up areas of Metropolitan Lagos, the average density is over 20,000 persons per square km.

• Lagos population is growing ten times faster than New York and Los Angeles (Lagos State Government, 2006).
