• HISTORY:• Before and after independence on October 1st in 1960, Nigeria was a federation of

three Regions: Northern, Western, and Eastern. • Provinces were also used in colonial times.• In 1963, two provinces were detached from the Western Region to form the

new Mid-Western Region.• The capital of Nigeria was Calabar then Lagos and is now Abuja. • As of 2013, there were 176.3 million people in Nigeria.• The Natural Increase Rate is 2.5%. • The Human Development Index in 2012 was 0.47.• The GDP per capita from 2010-2014 is 3,006.• The total adult literacy rate from 2008-2012 is 51.1. • The 3 main cultures in Nigeria are Yoruba, Igbo and Hausa.

• MUSIC:• Music in Nigeria is one of the major

characteristics of the country.• It is well-known for its artistry in

developing all kinds of genres of music.• Music is known as ‘Africa’s Stumbling

Giant’.• Genres like Fuji, Reggae, Afro-beat,

Gospel, Hip-Hop and many others.• Great artists like King Sunny Ade (Fuji),

Majek Fashek (Reggae), Fela Kuti (Afro-beat), Tope Alabi (Gospel) and Wizkid, Davido, Tiwa Savage and many others (Hip-Hop).

• Music is used to mark celebrations and holds great importance and also has important messages.

• FOOD:• Food is very important in Nigeria.• Every celebration no matter how

small it is, food is believed to be a must.

• Food is used to bring people together in all forms.

• Different cultures have different foods.

• Yoruba people eat pounded yam, amala, rice and other foods.

• Igbo and Hausa people eat the same kind of food but have special dishes like kola-nuts and tuwo.

• LANGUAGE:• Language is essential in Nigeria and

basically everywhere because it’s the main source of communication.

• Friend is said as ORE• God is said as OLORUN• Food is said as OUNJE• Yoruba people speak Yoruba, Igbo

speak….• The language originated in Niger-

Congo.• There are 521 languages being spoken

in Nigeria and the official language is English.

• Most people in Nigeria speak Yoruba, mainly in the West.

• ETHNICITY:• There are various ethnicities in Nigeria

which are all based on the different cultures.

• From 1967 to 1999, thirty-six states were created in Nigeria, which cut across ethnic and religious lines.

• It distinguishes groupings of peoples who for historical reasons have come to be seen as distinctive--by themselves and others--on the basis of locational origins and a series of other cultural markers.

• Centripetal Forces like institutions, church, and celebrations bring various cultures together.

• Centrifugal Forces like wars and federalism tend to separate and distinguish cultures.

• RELIGION:• Religion is being practiced

everywhere in Nigeria.• The main religion is Christianity. • Then Islam then Traditional. • Religion is the ethnic part of Nigerian

culture and has been carried on for centuries, decades and even longer till present.

• Most Yorubas believe that Jesus is the savior and call Him ‘Jesu Kristi’.

Christianity:• People believe that Jesus is our Lord

and Savior and will one day come back to take us to Heaven.

• This practice is done the same as other Christians do in other parts of the world.

• Christians in Nigeria comprise between 40% and 49.3% of the population.

• Most Yorubas now practice Christianity and Islam.

Traditional:• People that follow this religion

believe in idols and little gods.• They have shrines but NOT all

practice voo-doo.• Some or most believe in God but

through ancient and traditional ways• They call God ‘Eledunmare’.• Not a lot of people practice this

religion today in Nigeria.

• ENVIRONMENT:• Nigeria is located in West Africa and shares land borders with the Republic

of Benin in the west, Chad and Cameroon in the east, and Niger in the north. Its coast in the south lies on the Gulf of Guinea in the Atlantic Ocean.

• Nigeria is completely surrounded by mass lands.• It has a large land mass of 356,669 sq miles (923,768 km²).• It has so many green lands and a lot of bodies of water.• It environment has made life very easy for people to live in because their rely

mostly on their environment for food and resources. • Its environment has caused a lot of developing and modernizing due to

globalization and colonization from Britain.

• POPULAR CULTURE:• Way of life is more modern than the old days thanks to Cultural Appropriation and

Reterritoialization of popular culture. • Technology is more in use now like Samsung Galaxies and iPhones.• Various restaurants and eateries like Chicken Republic, Dominos*, KFC, and

Chinese Restaurants have been introduced in Nigeria and established there. • Also, people are now into exhibiting traits of foreigners to add to their culture.

People aren’t as interested in their culture anymore. • This is a picture of the Korean Cultural Center in Nigeria.

• FOLK CULTURE:• Way back, life was similar to other cultures

because they had had similar beliefs.• People lived in villages and had no

technology.• The mode of dressing for females was a

blouse and wrapper called ‘IRO ATI BUBA’.• Males wore a big shirt or dansiki and shorts

or pants called ‘BUBA ATI SOKOTO’. • They celebrated festivals like Agemo Festival,

Masquerade Festival and plenty others. • For the Agemo Festival, females weren’t

allowed to go because it was forbidden for any female to see the masquerade because they though they would die in 7 days.

• POPULAR TOURIST DESTINATIONS:• Tourists love to travel to various parts of the world to see different cultures and

places. • Tourism in Nigeria centers largely on cultural events, due to the country’s ample

amount of ethnic groups, but also includes rain forests, savannah, waterfalls and other natural attractions.

• In Nigeria, there are so many places for tourists to see.• 1. The Aso Rock: Aso Rock is a large outcrop that is on the outskirts of Abuja, the

capital of Nigeria. The Aso Rock is a 400 meter monolith and is the city's most noticeable feature. "Aso" means victorious in the native language of the (now displaced) Asokoro ("the people of victory"). Aso Rock was the site of the 2003 Aso Rock Declaration, issued by Heads of Government of the Commonwealth in Abuja.

• 2. Abuja Landmasses and Golf Courts: People go here to play golf and just admire the beauty of nature. Serves as a place of recreation and relaxation.

• 3. Sheraton Hotel: Although it’s a hotel, people come here to view its beauty. It has so many characteristics like monuments, landmass, pools and other amazing places.

• 4. Olumo Rock : Olumo rock, one of the most popular tourist destinations in Nigeria, it sits in the ancient city center of Abeokuta – a name which means ‘under the rock’. Abeokuta was originally inhabited by the Egba people who found refuge at the Olumo rock during the inter-tribal wars in the 19th century. The rock provided sanctuary to the people as well as a vantage point to monitor the enemy’s advance leading to eventual triumph in war. Olumo means “all the troubles and sufferings were over” .Olumo rock was turned into a tourist site in 1976 and thus commission in February 3rd 2006 by chief Olusegun Obasanjo.
