    Queens Department of History is pleased to welcome Dr. Robin Kelley,

    Distinguished Professor and Gary B. Nash Endowed Chair in U.S. History

    at the University of California, Los Angeles, to campus for the 2018 Preyer

    Lecture. Dr. Kelley’s lecture will explore how everyday acts of resistance

    and survival shaped and changed the lives of civil rights activists, and

    what led to the defeat of revolutionary insurgencies in the late 1960s U.S.

    south and global South.

    A Sign of the Times preserves the pre-enslavement

    legacy of the African Diaspora through music,

    dance and spoken word. Their lauded jazz ensemble

    “Going Through Changes” presents an entertaining

    but thought-provoking concert that tells the stories

    of trials and triumph experienced by people of color

    in this community and throughout the world.

    Public murals and street art seem to be popping up all over Charlotte. That’s why it’s no surprise that a

    team of local artists organized The Art Outside, a city-wide mural festival. In conjunction with the Talking

    Walls Mural Festival, a select group of muralists and street artists will exhibit their vibrant artwork. The

    opening night reception features live painting, live music and artist talks. It’s a night of inspiring visual

    beauty you won’t want to miss.

    This original play, adapted from Dr. Susan Cernyak-Spatz’s

    autobiography Protective Custody PRISONER: 34042,

    captures the riveting experiences of her Auschwitz-

    Birkenau internment as well as the eventual liberation of

    this well-known Charlotte Holocaust survivor. The evening

    will celebrate all of our Charlotte community’s more than

    three dozen Holocaust survivors and the successes of the

    Greenspon Center’s first two years.
