ART HIsTORy EXCURsION

MAC/vAL (MUséE D’ART CONTEMPORAIN DU vAL-DE-MARNE)

Situated in the close suburbs of Paris (Vitry-sur-Seine), the MacVal Museum is one of the most challenging contemporary art experiences in France.

Dedicated to French art after 1945, it dares original permanent collections and innovative site-specific temporary exhibits. The Mac/Val is also an excellent example of contemporary museum architecture and how art contributes to social cohesion in an urbanized area with insufficient cultural offerings.

The half-day excursion includes a commented visit of the permanent and temporary shows as well as a talk on the museums’ architecture and garden, and its role in the region. All students interested in art, visual culture, and communications are welcome.

excursions + activities

Explore the Château of Fontainebleau, nested within a vast forest and one of the major sites of the artistic investment of French kings between 1528 and the building of Versailles.

The visit begins by looking at the exterior of the building and its gardens, while tracking the pas-sage from a minor medieval hunting lodge to a sophisticated and daring Renaissance residence that remained the site of impressive rebuilding and artistic transformation into the 19th century.

Much of the interior visit is devoted to the remarkably complex Renaissance masterpiece of the Gallery of King Francis 1st; the Room of Alexander, built to house the king’s mistress the Duchess of Étampes; and the fine Ballroom of King Henri II.

FALL 2014

Jazz Concert – Gilberto Gil Monday October 13, 8 pm €24 for Category 2

Take care of your musical soul with an acoustic performance by Gilberto Gil. Well-known for his samba and bossa nova inspired work, the Brazilian musical sensation is also a pioneer in tropicália-style music with influences from rock, punk, blues, and reggae. Let yourself be carried away to the beaches of Brazil for an evening of swaying rhythms and soothing melodies.

An American in Paris Thursday December 11, 8 pm €42 for Category 3

This winter sees the world premiere of the stage production of the famous film re-adapted by Christopher Wheeldon and featuring original music and choreography by Gershwin and Gene Kelly. Eager to begin his life anew after the brutality of WWII, Jerry Mulligan chooses newly-liberated Paris as his home. With the assistance of a wealthy American ex-pat, Jerry sets out to make a name for himself as a painter. However, his life soon becomes complicated when he falls in love with a young Parisian shop girl. A classic American film about young souls in Paris has been reimagined for the stage of the 21st century.

sPRING 2015

Le Petit Prince Thursday February 12, 8 pm €39 for Category 1

An opera for children and adults of all cultures which sings the text and message of the Little Prince, the mysterious child whom Saint-Exupéry met in the desert and with whose voice he addresses adults at the heart of the 20th century tragedy. When Le Petit Prince was published in 1943, the horrors of the Second World War had not yet come to pass; the way in which the story’s hero saw the world was a sign of hope.

Singin’ in the Rain Tuesday March 17, 8 pm €42 for Category 3

All the makings of a Tinseltown tabloid headline: the starlet, the leading man and a love affair that could change lives and make or break careers. In silent movies, Don Lockwood and Lina Lamont are a hot item, but behind the scenes things aren’t always as they appear! Lina’s squeaky voice might be the end of her career in “talking pictures” without the help of a talented young actress to do the talking and singing for her. This extraordinary score is a downright downpour of magical music - “Singin’ in the Rain,” “Make ‘Em Laugh” and “Good Mornin’.”

The Northern Renaissance comes alive through a visit to The Museum of Fine Arts in Brussels and the Flemish cities of Ghent and Bruges, first under Burgundian and then Imperial rule.

Fifteenth-century Ghent was a flourishing commercial and artistic center. Visit the Cathedral of Saint Bavo, which houses Van Eyck’s master altarpiece The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb. Later, see a striking Hieronymus Bosch at The Ghent Museum of Fine Arts.

In Bruges, discover impressive collections of Flemish art in the Groeninge Museum (featuring works by Jan van Eyck, Memling, and many others), as well as in the Memling Museum, housed in the historic 12th century Hospital of Saint Jean. Visits include the Church of Our Lady, with its Madonna and Child by Michelangelo, and the Franc de Bruges, with its spectacular 1529 chim-neypiece. A boat ride around the city’s canals takes you through the heart of the old city, where you can marvel at churches and medieval houses reflected in the water.

Since antiquity, Rome has captured both artists’ and historians’ imaginations. From Poussin to Gibbon, the city’s rise and fall have inspired the greatest artists of Europe and its most prominent historians.

The monuments left in the wake of the Empire and Renaissance and the political, cultural, and legal heritage of the eternal city will nourish our visit with historical walking tours in the morning and drawing and individual study projects in the afternoon.

The Baroque style was born in Rome, and developed there throughout the 17th century. The extraordinary patronage opportunities drew many brilliant artists to construct, decorate and ornament the city.

Caravaggio’s paintings, filled with new drama, emotion, immediacy and naturalism, will be studied, many of them still in situ. Paintings by the Carracci family and their pupils will likewise be examined, as will the grand frescoes of other masters, deployed on the ceilings of palaces and churches.

We shall study the architectural productions of the greatest Baroque formulators. Most important here is the Vatican church of St. Peter’s, with its copious and magnificent decoration. Bernini, the greatest sculptor of his century, created many brilliant works which have never left the Eternal City.

To comprehend the greatness of the Baroque style, one must undertake a proper study of the principal works of painting, architecture and sculpture which remain in Rome, capital of the Counter-Reformation.

Priority for Participation

Students registered in the corresponding course(s) of a study trip are given priority for participation on study trips. In the event of enrollment exceeding number of spots pre-booked, the CP Coordinator does her best to add extra spots to the trip. Please note, however, that sometimes this is not possible due to outside restraints (flights, hotels, etc). In this case, students registered in the corresponding course(s) will be given priority and those who are dropped from the trip are not responsible for the cost of the trip. In the event of there not being enough spots for everyone from the course(s), the date & time of registration will be taken into consideration.

Outside Participants

Individuals who are not current AUP students but who would like to participate in a study trip or activity must make a request directly to the Cultural Program Coordinator no later than the study trip registration period of DROP/ADD. Participation is subject to availability. Unless otherwise agreed and established, outside participants pay the same fee as AUP participants. Payment for the Cultural Program activity is the only way to guarantee an outside individual’s participation in the study trip.

Excused Absences

Students who are registered in a class corresponding to a study trip are excused by Academic Affairs from attending their other classes during the dates of the study trip if they are attending the trip. If the time of departure or arrival allows a student to attend class before leaving or after returning from a study trip, the student may be expected to do so and must be in contact with their professor to make sure this is clear for both the professor and the student.

Students who are registered in a study trip but who are not registered in the corresponding class are NOT officially excused from their classes by Academic Affairs. Students are advised to contact their professors before registering for a trip to see if their professor can permit their absence.

The Cultural Program cannot issue refunds for trips in the event that a student decides to cancel after the DROP/ADD deadline for the reason that their professor cannot excuse their absence from class.

Accommodation, Transportation & Special Arrangement Requests

In most cases, students share accommoda-tion in sets of twin, triple, and quad (or more in specific circumstances), depending on the establishment and trip budget. Students are notified of the accommodations reserved in the confirmation email sent by the CP Coor-dinator at the beginning of the semester and may submit rooming requests.

In most cases, transportation is reserved in advance by the CP Coordinator in order to secure the best possible times according to the professor’s schedule and obtain the best possible prices.

Students wishing to arrange their own lodging or transportation or have specific requests must make this clear upon registering for a trip by contacting the Cultural Program Coordinator and submitting the request in writing via email. Special arrangements pend approval by the Cultural Program Coordinator and in certain cases, the accompanying professor. The Cul-tural Program will do its best to accommodate special requests, but please note that these may not always be possible because of trip-specific, reservation, and/or budget restraints. In all cases, students will be charged for group and professor-related fees. Any extra cost associated with a special arrangement is the responsibility of the student.

CULTURAL EXCURsIONs, ACTIvITIEs & TICkETsSign-up for Cultural Excursions, Activities, and Tickets is done through the Cultural Program website. In order to sign up, the student must pay the full amount of the excursion or ticket on the corresponding page.

Once payment is made, no cancellations or refunds are possible. A student may sell their ticket or seat to someone else and the Cultural Program office will do its best to help the student find a buyer; however, the financial transaction is solely the student’s responsibility.

CARTE DE séJOURAny student who registers for a cultural excursion or study trip that involves travel outside of France and who does not have the proper documents to travel at the date of the study trip, or who does not correctly fulfill the Carte de Séjour requirements by providing the necessary documents to the Student Immigration Services Office at the start of the semester and is, therefore, unable to travel, will be held responsible for the cost of the trip. No exceptions to this rule. See the Student Immigration Services Office if you are not sure that you have the proper documents to travel and notify the Cultural Program Office upon registration.

vIsAs Students are responsible for knowing the visa requirements for their nationality for travel outside of France. If a visa is required, the Cultural Program Office can provide a letter that attests to the student participating on a university sponsored tourism trip. This can be taken to the em-bassy or consulate of the relevant country as part of the application to obtain a visa.

It is highly advised, once registered for a trip, to contact the relevant embassy or consulate as soon as possible to confirm the visa requirements, and the cost and time needed to deliver the visa. Any student who is unable to participate in a trip because of failure to complete visa arrangements will be held responsible for the cost of the trip.

CONDUCTAny behavior on Cultural Program study trips or excursions that violates either the University’s Standards of Conduct or local legislation is prohibited and can result in disciplinary action. In extreme cases, students may be asked to leave the group and return home. See The American University of Paris 2014-15 Course Catalog for more information.
