    CULTIVATIONOFVEGETABLESONTERRACEAvailability of land for growing vegetables is a major problem in cities and towns. To overcome this

    problem terrace cultivation is recommended.Some important points tobe remembered invegetable

    cultivationon

    terraces

    of

    buildings

    are

    listed

    below.

    1. Forthecultivationofvegetablesonterraces,plasticbagsarepreferredoverearthenpots. The

    cornersatthebottomportionofthebagaretobepushed inandthenfilledupto3/4thareawithsoil

    mixturecontaining

    two

    parts

    soil,

    one

    part

    sand

    and

    one

    part

    powdered

    cow

    dung

    mixed

    together.

    The

    rest1/4thareaofthebagatthetopwillhavetobedoneinsoilmixtureinsidethebag.

    2. Inthecaseofsmallerseededcropslikeamaranths,tomato,brinjaletc seedlingswillhavetobe

    raisedseparatelyandtransplantedafter3weeks(45 leavedstage).Thetopportionofthebagearlier

    foldedbackcanbeunfoldedsoastoprovideshadetotheyoungseeding.Whenseedinggot

    established,thetopportioncanbefoldedbackagain.

    3. Inthecaseofbigseededplantslikebhindi(LadyFinger),cowpea,swornbeanetcsowingcanbe

    donedirectlyinthebagattherateoftwospotsperbag,eachspotcontainingtwoseeds.Forcropslike

    bittergourd,snakegourdandvegetablecowpea, sufficientpandalwillhave tobeconstructedusing

    polesfixed

    at

    the

    metal

    rings

    provided

    at

    the

    corners

    of

    the

    terrace

    when

    the

    vine

    starts

    creeping

    on

    the

    floor. In the caseofpumpkin,ashgourdandcucumber ,coconutorareca nut leaveswillhave tobe

    spreadontheterracesoastoallowvinestocreepoverit.

    4. Plantsraisedinbagswillhavetobeirrigatedbothinthemorningandeveningattherateofone

    ortwomugs fullofwatereachtime.Thequantityofwaterhastoberegulated insuchawaythatno

    excesswaterdrainsoffthebagandatthesametimetheplantsdonotwither.

    5. Thebagsare tobekeptover twoor threebricksarranged insuchaway that rainwatercan

    easilyflowovertheterrace.Thiswillensureproperaerationbelowthebags.

    Thebags

    will

    have

    to

    be

    placed

    along

    the

    bottom

    of

    the

    parapet

    walls

    on

    the

    terrace.

    Bags

    can

    bekeptinthecentreoftheterracesprovidedthereiswallsupportbeneaththebags.Itisbettertouse

    organic manures like cow dung , ash, neemcake, bonomeal, compost, vermin compost for terrace

    cultivation.Similarlyuseonlyorganicpesticidesforthecontrolofpests.
