Rubik’s cube. I didn’t take a real interest in cubinguntil mid 2009.CD: Who inspired you as a speedcuber?ZC: No one really inspired me to start speedcubing, but once I got into speedcubing I suppose ErikAkkersdijk’s solves motivated me to get faster.Chris Hardwick was the one who inspired me tolearn big cubes BLD.CD: What was your time when you first solve the3x3x3?ZC: My first solve without looking at theinstructions was 34 minutes.CD: Why are you so addicted to Blindfoldedsolving? When I was new to cubing, I was convinced thatsolving a cube BLD was well beyond my grasp. Ithink this has given me more of an appreciation forthe event. Other than that, I find the mnemonic(memory) systems interesting and useful, since they

UBING DARE: When did you startcubing? and which method did youuse?ZANE CARNEY: I first learnt tosolve the cube in 2008 with a layer bylayer method that came with the

ZC: After 2 or 3 DNFs, Igot a 13 minute success (8minute memo). My firstmulti attempt was asuccessful 2/2, I can’tremember the time, somewhere around 20minutes.CD: According to yourintroduction about yourself, you have many favoritecubers and there are toomany to list, but Who willbe FIRST in your mind?ZC: I’m going to say Chris Hardwick. He inspired, motivated and helped me soooo much with BLD. Ifinally met him in person at WC 2011, he’s suchawesome guy.CD: What is your target with multi bld/ how manycubes for this year?ZC: I’m in year 12 now and as a result I’m notpractising much at all. years old.CD: How often do you run and how manykilometers?ZC: I don’t run that much, I use to jog for maybe15 minutes each night (so that’s only a couple ofkilometres). Recently I replaced jogging with bikeriding.

CD: When do you think yourdream to visit North Americawill be happen?ZC: I wouldn’t call it adream , but I don’t expect itto happen any time soon (ifit ever happens). I mostlywant to visit the BarringerCrater in Arizona andYellowstone National Park.CD: What is the biggest ofyour scary experiences?ZC: I can’t recall having anunforgettably scary experience, so it’s difficult to

single out a particular moment. It probablywould’ve taken place somewhere high, where I’vegot into that awkward position where no matterhow you move, you feel like you’re going to loseyour balance and fall.
