A Message from the Scout Executive
Dear Scouters,
Warm weather is now upon us, and that means summer is fast approaching. With summer comes a plethora of outdoor activities for Scouts of all ages.
Boy Scout Summer Camp, National Jamboree, Family Camp, Webelos Weekend, Cub Scout Day Camp, and Cub and Webelos Resident Camp all offer the same big prize in Scouting. They offer the “OUT” in Scouting! Young people don’t join Scouts to learn to be better citizens, to deepen their faith in God, or to develop good character which will help them grow to be the best, and the most they can be as adults. No, they join for fun,
for the adventure, the excitement, and they find that in the great outdoors.
So are we doing everything we can to make sure they get to camp? I ask you to commit yourself to do just that. Make sure that every Scout within your sphere of influence gets to camp. Wonderful things will happen if you do so.
Scouts of all ages have some things in common. If they attend camp in the summer they are much, much more likely to stay in Scouting for another year. And studies have shown us that Scouts learn all kinds of wonderful things when they attend camp. Things like learning to work as part of a team, learning to be good leaders, learning new skills and new hobbies. They learn to be more self-sufficient, have more respect for nature, and have more confidence in themselves. And they have FUN!
Simply put, a Scout without a camping experience in the summer just is not getting his due. We call him a Scout, but he does not get the big prize. He does not get to participate in the biggest and most important event of Scouting.
Camp! It’s almost always the main reason they join Scouting, and it is the best Scouting has to offer. Let’s get them all to camp. I hope to see you there too. Good Scouting to You and Yours, Jeffrey L. Purdy Scout Executive

Volunteers are the heart of Scouting and in the Buckskin Council we have a group who quietly serve you by making sure the newsletters and other key communications are prepared, labeled and mailed. It is important to let our leaders know who these folks are so you can thank them when you see them. The person who leads the charge is Bonnie Starling! The April Courier helpers were Phil Gaarenstroom, and Art Altman We always look forward to seeing these volunteers in
the council office. The Newsletter is folded on the last Tuesday of each month, between August and May, starting around 8:30 am and ending around noon. If you would like to join this great group of people, call the Scout Service Center at 304-340-3663 and let us know. We would greatly appreciate your help!!!!

2018 Sea Base Contingent
June 9-15, 2018 There's a wilderness that encompasses far more of the world's space that most people will never see: that’s the wilderness under, and above, the ocean. There you can see fan coral and sea grass, sting rays and manatees, sharks and goliath grouper. There you can travel the seas where explor-ers, pirates and adventurers have sailed for centuries. That is the wilderness that Scouts and Venturers will explore as members of Buckskin Council’s Contingent to the Boy Scouts of America’s Florida Sea Base, located in the heart of the fabulous Florida Keys, on a subtropical island 75 miles south of Miami. Sea Base, for many, is a once in a lifetime experience. You too can be among those lucky enough to share in this adventure. You will embark on a 7-day expedition where you and your crew will sail, snorkel, fish in the gulf stream, learn unique outdoor skills, and cre-ate memories that will last a lifetime. Buckskin Council will be sending 2 crews (6-8 per crew) to Sea Base in the summer of 2018. We are taking applications for our waiting list. Scouts must be 14 years of age. (or 13 years of age and graduated 8th grade by June 11, 2018) All participants must complete the BSA Swim Test and will be rechecked on arrival at Sea Base. Dates: June 9-15, 2018 Tentative cost: $1,500 ($200 deposit with application)
Scholarships are available.

Later, the home was purchased by Confederate Colonel George S. Patton I, grandfather of WW2 General George S. Patton. It was moved twice but ulti-mately was saved by the National Society of Colonial Dames in America in the State of West Virginia (NSCDAWV) and moved in 1973 to its current location.”** It is near the H. Does Scouting Offer What I Want? The Boy Scouts of America offers one of the most rewarding career opportunities for college graduates and for professionals who are searching for a career change that will have significant impact on their communities. Think about it: your career has an enormous impact on your life. Often, your career determines where you live and how you feel about yourself. Making that career choice is a vitally important decision. Why not take a step toward leadership and consider working as a professional Scouter with the Boy Scouts of Amer-ica? Contact Billy Bryant at 304-340-3663 for more information.

TRAINING CORNER
by Carol McCarthy
NEW: Scoutmaster & Asst SM Specific Training is now online. Now IOLS (Intro to Outdoor Leader Skills) is the only face-to-face training needed to complete the require-ments to be fully trained as scoutmaster or assistant scout-master! Log in to My.Scouting.org account and click on “BSA Learn Center.” Troop Committee members and Merit Badge Counselors can also be trained ONLINE. Read more about it at: http://blog.scoutingmagazine.org/2017/03/30/boy-scout-leaders-get-trained-anywhere-at-any-time/ It is HIGHLY Recommended that leaders go to all the physical training (outdoor training and Roundtables) they can. As a beginner who takes the online course, we are edu-cated learners. But, with the interaction of others, we learn answers to questions we didn't know we had. Besides, that is where some of the fun and the NETWORKING is after all. Good news: YPT (Youth Protection Training) is now mobile-device compatible. Log in to your My.Scouting.org account. Print your completed certificate to safely file it and to be registered as a NEW leader for regis-tration purposes. EDGE NEWS: It has recently been changed by National BSA that EDGE training is good for three years. More im-portantly, the Council Training Chairman and/or the Wood Badge Course Director may waive the requirement for Wood Badge Staff, NYLT staff or other Council staff to take it before serving on those courses or delivering training. Summer Camp Training Opportunities A variety of adult leader training will be offered at both summer camps. Check the schedule with the Camp Direc-tor or Program Director later in May to find out what will be offered at each camp.
How to do ONLINE TRAINING: E-Learning training courses are available to take online at My.Scouting.org. whether you are registered or not! Go to My.Scouting.org and sign in or create an account. (Remember your user name & password!) The Training courses can be found by selecting the Home button in the upper left corner, then My Dashboard in the menu list. It now defaults to the My.Scouting from the old online address, and is enhanced, providing courses you need for your specific position, Youth Protection Training (20 min course), requirements to be fully trained, and what has been completed. PRINT or save the certificate as you complete courses for filing. You will need the YPT certificate to register in the program or re-charter if not current in Youth Protection (YPT) online. You will NOT be registered during re-chartering without it! YPT expires every 2 years!
TRAINING DATES: All training in ANY District across any Council counts for leaders who get there. Find a good date and GO! MAY 5-6 Wilderness First Aid course at H. Takhonek Lodge AIA &ICE Weekend Report If you missed this year’s American Indian Activities & Induc-tions and Ceremonies weekend, then you missed out on one of the best events I have been to! Not only did we enjoy the Fel-lowship you always have at a Lodge event, but everything about the weekend was FUN! This year our Lodge Leadership Committee introduced an awards program that both youth and adults can participate in. Our Lodge members can now be recognized for all their efforts in the AIA & ICE part of our Lodge program. The award is broken down into four different categories depending on your interests; ceremonies, dance and drum, craftsman, and support. The award program also encourages Arrowmen to work with Cub Scouts in our Districts and Council. For more information about the AIA & ICE Award program go to our Lodge website www.takhonek.org. We had 33 Arrowmen attend this weekend event. We could work on building ceremony regalia, which included breech-cloths, moccasins, and gustoweh (Eastern Woodland headdress-es). Some of the most popular stations were drum stick making, intro to drum and singing. I want to give special thanks to Evan Adkins, Daniel Green, and Jeff Gibbison for teaching us about drumming. Shawn Comer built us looms so we could learn about this type of beadwork. I think everyone especially our adults enjoyed making pocket dangles. Like I said the whole weekend was amazing! We didn’t want to leave one class to go to the next. I would like to also thank the following people for their efforts in providing the wonderful weekend George Soltis, Robert Alford, Sam Brown, Eddy Polk, Steve Hardman, Debbie Slack, Grace Tolbert, Braxton Wood, Justin Bess and everyone that attended or helped that I may have missed. One last thought, if you didn’t make it to this year’s AIA and ICE Weekend then you most definitely need to save the date for next year; March 16-18, 2018 to be held at Camp Chief Logan. Cub Scout Day Camp
Day Camp is an outdoor experience where Cub Scouts par-
ticipate in individual and team sports, games, crafts, explore
nature, and work on achievements, electives, and activity
badges. The day camp program is designed to teach skills
and develop attitudes that make a boy more self-reliant and
more at home in the outdoors. He will have fun with a pur-
pose. The purpose is to build character while providing a
memorable experience in the life of a boy. Make sure your
boys get Cub Scouting at its best by attending Cub Scout
Day Camp. We are always in need of more volunteers to
help make it a memorable summer for the Scouts. If you
would like to get involved and help make life long memo-
ries for the Cub Scouts at Day Camp please contact Bill

leader, through the Tribute fund. All funds received go to the
operating cost in the year they are given. Anyone may,
however, designate the donations for a specific purpose.
