Above, four members of HMK Cub Corner Newspaper pose with 99 year old Country Meadows resident Janet Angus.

By Mico C. and Austin M.This month we interviewed two vital members of the HMK team, Gail and Salvadore!Gail mentioned that she loves working at HMK because she enjoys helping children. When she isn’t at HMK she enjoys watching TV and music.

Salvadore enjoys working at the school because he enjoys seeing all the children. The part of the job he least looks forward to is working in the winter. In his free time he enjoys colleting model cars and playing basketball.

If you see Gail or Salvadoremake sure to thank them for their hard work!

“People are stealing my things, what should I do?” –Feeling Sad

Dear Feeling Sad, Make sure that you are telling the teacher that things are going missing, it will help them keep track. Also make sure not to leave important things lying around. If you know who the people are tell them to stop because it is making you feel sad.

“People are cheating in soccer, what should I do?” –Feeling Hurt

Dear Feeling Hurt, If someone is cheating in soccer you could tell the nicely to stop and explain why it is not okay. If they continue to cheat go play a new game and let a teacher or adult know because cheating is mean and it wrecks the game.

Frostbite!.

Music Masters

Happy New YearBy Celine C.

There are a lot of New Year’s traditions around the world. Here are a few different ways to celebrate! In Thailand people used to fire guns to scare demons away. After they would enjoy a big feast. In China, firecrackers were used to scare away evil spirits. In Spain, there is a tradition where you eat twelve grapes at midnight. In the southern United States eating Black Eyed Peas and pork is believed to mean that you will have a fantastic year! In Scotland people celebrate Hogmanay. Everyone likes to have parades down the street. They also light balls of fire attached to a stick and swing them around. In Denmark people gather all of their unused plates and on New Year’s Eve they gather and break all of them.

If you had your choice of celebration which would you choose?

By Baby Rose M and Jomeru UFrostbite. All of us have probably had it. Today we will

be talking about the causes and treatments of the dreaded winter injury.

What is frostbite? It is a swelling injury caused by numbing of the skin. First your skin becomes really cold and red, then it becomes numb, hard and pale. These are the starting signs of frostbite. The most common areas of concern are the fingers, toes, nose, ears and cheeks.

What causes frostbite? The symptoms of frostbite often begin with the affected areas feeling cold and painful. Staying out for too long on a cold, windy day with skin exposed is the leading cause.

How to treat frostbite. A person with frostbite should be taken to a very warm place as soon as possible. He/She could also take a warm bath. Avoid applying high heat the affected area.

Remember to bundle up in the cold winter weather!

By Makenna S and Macey KThe musician of the month is the person who worked the hardest and tried their very best in music and did not give up. Congratulations to Krystal (Grade 4) who got picked because she loves to sing and is enthusiastic with music. She created a beautiful tone and is a talented recorder player.

Daniel (Grade 2) got picked because he puts in a good effort in all music activities and is a leader in class. He is a talented pianist and is also helpful and kind.

SUPER-intendent

By Danica P. and Breanna V.Mr. Young is a kind, polite and very busy

man. Thanks for taking the time out of your day for meeting with us!

Mr. Young is in charge of the fourteen schools in Beautiful Plains School Division and the staff that makes up those schools. We went to see Mr. Young at the Division Office in Neepawa and we asked him a couple questions. Here we go!

Mr. Young is busy with many things. His job mostly consists of planning, placing staff and successfully completing his work. He is proud of many things in the division but most proud of the students because of how much they have accomplished. For example, the students have accomplished things in art, sports and much more.

And now the part you’ve all been waiting for…the new school! We asked Mr. Young to provide some details on the school. We found out it will be opening in September of 2019. It will be a middle school with grades 5-8 classrooms and it will include a library, gym and a multi-purpose room. There are going to be moveable walls that open to make one giant room. For all the basketball enthusiasts, we have some exciting news. They are tearing down the outdoor basketball courts and building brand new courts in a new location! That’s the scoop straight from Mr. Young’s office!

Athlete of the Month

By Makenna S and Macey KCongratulations to Monique Malsi who is the

HMK Athlete of the Month. She will be representing the West Region at the 2018 Manitoba Games in Thompson from March 4-7, 2018. Karly Miller of the Manitoba Gymnastics Association added “she has trained very diligently to be able to represent Team West at the prestigious event.” Good luck Monique!

Anglerfish Enter Text Here

January 2018

By Makenna S.Did you know that the Anglerfish is one of the most unique species of fish in existence? The females are surprisingly much bigger than males, and can reach up to 1.2m long while males typically grow to approximately 20cm. That’s a huge difference! The longer scientific name for the Anglerfish is the Kroyer’s Deep Sea Angler. The Anglerfish is an ambush predator which means they sit and wait for their prey and strike fast when the prey is close enough. They have a lure that hangs over their head which is used to light up the deep ocean. This light in the lure comes from photo plankton. They also use the lure to attract prey closer to them and suck them into their huge mouths. Their prey includes crustaceans, shrimp, snails, small squid, turtles, and sometimes even seabirds. Anglerfish are found very deep in the oceans all over the world, but you won’t need to worry about one while you are swimming because they are found up to 2000 meters below the water’s surface.

By Jomeru U.Has your child lost their $60 hoodie? Try checking the HMK lost and found. Parents can come anytime to check. Walk through the office doors and take a look on your left and there will be a long table filled with jackets, mitts, toques, ski pants, and much more. There is also a separate lost and found in the HMK gym. If any of these items belong to your child please take them before the end of the month deadline. Unclaimed items are donated to the Salvation Army.
