So far, we have introduced the credit union’s new website and online banking services; created the Youth Saves and Military Saves accounts; and changed the way we process debit card transactions. Each of these projects was an enormously complex process change. As hard as we work to make all of these changes seamless, it doesn’t always work out that way. With this change, members will receive new chip-enabled cards with different VISA card numbers for each cardholder (this will help if one is lost or stolen.) Earlier, I wrote to you explaining that there would be a number of changes members would see in 2016 as we work to upgrade the products and services your credit union offers. So far, we have introduced the credit union’s new website and online banking services; created the Youth Saves and Military Saves accounts; and changed the way we process debit card

transactions. Each of these projects was an enormously complex process change. As hard as we work to make all of these changes seamless, it doesn’t always work out that way. We know there have been some bumps as these changes were implemented. Our intent is always to do what is in the best interest of our membership over the long term. In some cases these changes are designed to lower cost or to improve efficiency giving members a better product or service. I am certain these changes will give us some of each.

There are still a few more big projects your credit union has in the works. In November, we’re putting in a new phone system. Our main numbers will not be changing but the direct dial numbers for staff will. The staff will know their new numbers in the beginning of November and will provide them to members upon request. Around the end of the year, the credit union is also adding functionality to our website so members can open accounts online without coming to a branch. Finally in January, credit card processing will be brought in house. With this change, members will receive new chip-enabled cards with different VISA card numbers for each cardholder (this will help if one is lost or stolen.) This change will also lower cost and allow us to upgrade the online viewing of transaction information, as well as, make payments with a simple transfer. Your balance will update immediately.

I know that all you want is for your account to work. That’s all I want too. All the changes we have been making are designed to make your life better and we agonize over ways to make these changes as smooth as possible. I apologize for the bumps and promise to continue to work to make future changes as easy as possible.

Establish and Monitor Financial Goals

It’s not how much money you make…It’s what you do with the money you make!

It’s a fallacy to equate income with wealth. Someone can literally make millions of dollars in a lifetime, but consume it all through spending, putting nothing aside for wealth accumulation, and end up impoverished.

Financial Goals are your short, intermediate and long-term destinations in life:

Short-term goals are those things you want to accomplish over the next year or so. Examples include paying off credit card debt, building an emergency fund, saving for a special vacation or new furniture. Because of the short-term nature of these goals, fixed interest savings vehicles are generally your best bet for money set aside to meet short-term goals.

Intermediate-term goals generally encompass financial needs that you want to meet over the next three to 10 years. Examples can include buying a home, starting your own business and, depending on the age of your children, providing for a college education. Since more time is available to meet intermediate-term goals, a combination of saving and investment vehicles may be appropriate.

Long-term goals include retirement planning and, again depending on the age of your children, paying for a college education…events that are 10 years or more in the future. With more time to recoup losses from market downturns, money for long-term goals can be invested more aggressively, such as in stocks and equity mutual funds.

Once you decide on your financial goals, a financial plan then becomes your roadmap for reaching those destinations. A financial plan provides the specifics of when and how much you will set aside, as well as how those funds will be invested.

Finally, monitor your financial plan over time. Be prepared to make adjustments as your needs and circumstances change in the future.

Large Cash Withdrawalsand your Safety

We all love cash, but carrying large sums of money is not safe! At the credit union we are here to protect your hard earned money and we take that job very seriously.

Occasionally, we have members come in to withdraw large amounts of money. We’re talking about thousands of dollars in cash. This is a great security risk for our members. We know that you are excited to buy that new car or boat you have been dreaming about, but it is just not safe to walk around with that much money on you.

We want to remind you that if you need large amounts of money there are other ways to receive your funds. We are able to provide you with a cashier’s check or wire transfer and we have the external transfer option within online banking. These are much safer options.

If you are in need of cash over $10,000, please contact the branch you wish to withdraw from 7 days prior to your transaction and we will be happy to accommodate you!

Recently in our community…We consider ourselves very fortunate to be part of this incredible community. Recently we have had some great opportunities to support a few of our affiliated organizations in this area.

Knowledge about money and finances at a young age sets a great foundation for a financially stable future. Over the summer we were able to share this knowledge by facilitating weekly financial literacy for King George Parks and Recreation’s Summer Camp.

As you may have noticed on Facebook, our National Dog Day Competition was a success! We

received many photos of our community’s adorable four legged friends and those photos received so many likes that we were able to donate $2,500 to the King George Animal Rescue League and the Fredericksburg Regional SPCA.

To kick off the school year we were able to participate in the YMCA’s Bright Beginnings program again. The Bright Beginnings program brings people from the community together to shop with children for back to school clothes. Local high school athletes and cheerleaders, police and emergency responders and more come out for this event to ensure that the children in our community are prepared and confident for the upcoming school year.

The Credit Union was also able to support back to school events for teachers and students in the counties of King George, Caroline, Westmoreland, Spotsylvania, and Stafford counties.

We have had a great summer and we look forward to a fall filled with more community events!
