EDITORIAL COMMENT

cantechonline.com 5DECEMBER 2019/JANUARY 2020

As well as The Grand Tour, we of course are planning for Asia CanTech. We’ll be announcing details around the show very shortly, so please do keep an eye on the usual channels. In this issue we take a look back at the success of the 2019 show, so please turn to page 28.

With 2020 also being a Metpack year, we’ll be bringing you the essential news, views and features around the event. Lots to look forward to for next year for sure…

Before then, we have plenty to cover in this issue. To go alongside our Asia CanTech preview, our digital editor, Kat Skeates, reviews Brau Beviale trade show, and our team of international reporters cover topics ranging from the growth of the ready-to-drink coffee market, a consumer insight report, and look at how the aid sector is important to the can making trade.

Festive greetings to all of our subscribers, and a Happy New Year. We’ll see you in 2020.

As 2019 draws to a close, we excitedly look forward to what 2020 has in store. In February, we visit New Delhi, India, for

CanTech The Grand Tour. The highlight of the event is the Global Can Supplier Awards, where we crown the Supplier Innovation Awards winners, a prestigious accolade for the companies deemed to have the most innovative product/equipment within the industry.

Unlike other metal packaging events, people within the industry will have the opportunity to vote for their preferred supplier innovation, via the Grand Tour website. This means that the Global Can Supplier Awards are truly independent, and voted for by their industry colleagues and peers.

To ensure neutrality, only one vote per person is allowed, and multiple votes from one person or excessive votes from one company (50+) will be discounted. Voting will open shortly, so be sure to keep an eye on cantechthegrandtour.com.

CanTech The Grand Tour itself is shaping up nicely, and R N Murthy of Tata Tinplate India has recently been announced as the latest keynote speaker.

“Today, aluminium packaging is the pre-ferred way to package goods. This is not only due to its sustainability and contribution to the global circular economy, but also due to the possibilities it offers in terms of branding and protection of the product. With this invest-ment, we hope to create “can do” moments for consumers, while contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable environment,” said Roberto Villaquiran, Canpack Group CEO.

“Thanks to the company’s expertise and the effort of more than 2,000 people involved in this 18-month long investment project we believe that our plant will serve as a world-wide standard for safety and quality, a world class manufacturing system, as well as the excellence of our employees, who have been trained in more than six countries across three continents,” said Camilo Pérez Bustos, general director at Canpack Colombia.

Canpack opens new site in ColombiaCanpack has opened its brand-new facility located in Tocancipa, Colombia following an investment of around $150m.

“Following the increased demand for sus-tainable and innovative aluminium packaging, the Canpack Group has decided to accelerate its expansion into the South American market. This investment has been founded upon a strong and trust-based relationship we have established with AB InBev. We are looking forward to expanding our business operations in Colombia as we see great potential for growth within the Colombian market,” said Peter F. Giorgi, president and CEO of Giorgi Global Holdings, owner of Canpack.

“Our great task to transform Colombia into a country even more committed to sustain-able development requires the support of strategic partners to help us to accomplish this purpose. For this reason, we have select-ed Canpack as one of our partners to lever-age their experience and alignment with our sustainable development objectives. The goal we have set for 2025 is to ensure that 100% of our packaging are recyclable or made from recycled materials. We are sure that the close co-operation with Canpack will help us to achieve this ambitious goal,” said Marcel Regis, president at Bavaria.

With a built area of approximately 75,000m² and more than 200 direct employees Canpack is the first producer in Colombia with the ability to deliver not only standard can sizes for the local market: 330ml or 355ml, but also unique can formats such as 269ml and 473ml. The new facility is designed

CMB supports Christmas toy appeal Carnaud MetalBox (CMB) are proud supporters of the local Rotary Club’s annual Christmas Toy Appeal.

This initiative, run by the The Rotary Club of Shipley relies on donations from local business-es and residents to provide children from more deprived backgrounds with a Christmas present. The donations from this year mean hundreds of children in the local area will receive a gift.

Co-op campaigns for foil recycling to increaseUK supermarket Co-op has launched a cam-paign to prevent tonnes of aluminium get-ting unnecessarily sent to landfill over the Christmas period.

Research by the Co-op has revealed that more than one in five (22%) UK adults do not recycle household aluminium and it is estimat-ed that over 3,000 tonnes could end up in landfill this Christmas.

Brits are expected to consume 378 million mince pies over the festive period, with around 378 tonnes of aluminium packaging used to bake and package the festive favourite. And almost a quarter of the aluminium packaging will not be recycled correctly. This is because shoppers unwittingly dispose of foil and alu-minium products in general household waste when it can be recycled. However, the Co-op has found that one in five local authorities do not accept aluminium foil in their recycling schemes yet 81% of consumers said they would recycle aluminium if they could.

Each year it is estimated that an average household uses 144metres of kitchen wrap-ping foil (15,000 tonnes) and 182 foil contain-ers (20,000 tonnes). Unfortunately, a fifth of this is unnecessarily going to landfill.

Co-op and Aluminium Packaging Recycling Organisation (Alupro) are urging all UK local authorities to accept the material along with food cans and glass bottle collections.

Currently 18% of local authorities do not accept aluminium foil, yet all of the councils have an aluminium food can and glass bottle collection in place. The process to collect aluminium foil is the same as these other materials at kerbside collection and if the foil has been rinsed out (just as we do with metal food cans), the packaging can be recycled.

Michael Fletcher, chief commercial officer at Co-op said: “How we do business really matters. The world is experiencing a climate crisis and we need to work together to avoid

it. Accelerating action is the only way to mitigate and reduce impacts on our natural world, and to ensure stable food supply chains in the future.

“We are committed in helping our mem-bers and customers to make environmentally friendly choices and reducing the environ-mental impact of products is and always has been at the core of Co-op. That’s why we are writing to local authorities to encourage them to collect such simple items as part of collections they already have in place.”

Paula Gurney from the CMB Charity Fund who organ-ised the collection at head office said: “Staff have been incredibly generous over the last couple of weeks and we have been overwhelmed by the number of gifts we have

managed to collect. We know that money can be tight at this time of year, but it’s reassuring to know that colleagues are more than willing to spare a thought for a worthwhile cause.”

Alupro, has urged caution to avoid unintended consequences of a Deposit Return Scheme. It predicts that two-thirds will switch from cans to plastic bottles, and one in five people will lose their deposit as they continue recycling at home. A deposit return scheme for drinks containers could result in an extra 823 million plastic bottles being produced.

The Aluminium Packaging Recycling Organisation, 2,000 UK adults were asked to imagine there was a 20p deposit on every can or bottle of any size, as proposed in Scotland.

This would mean consumers face paying an upfront deposit of £4.80 on top of the pur-chase price of a 24-can multipack compared with a deposit of 80p for four large plastic bottles containing the same amount of liquid.

When faced with this choice, two-thirds of those currently buying cans in multipacks would be likely to switch to the plastic bottles. Even if the deposit was 10p, half (51%) said they would still be likely to choose the plastic bottles over the multipack of cans.

The government has said it favours an ‘all-in’ deposit return scheme. This follows plans in Scotland to implement a deposit return scheme in 2021, where plastic, glass or metal drinks containers of any size will have the same deposit attached, likely to be 20p.

Alupro is warning that attaching the same deposit fee to all sizes of container will lead consumers to opt for larger plastic bottles, having consequences for the environment and encouraging larger portion sizes.

Consumers will be able to recoup any deposit they pay by taking their empty con-tainers to a designated collection point – most likely a supermarket or local shop – but the survey revealed that one in five people (19%) would still end up using their recycling bin at home.

Alupro is concerned that some of those who can least afford to lose a deposit will be those most likely to struggle with returning their drinks containers – 22% of those surveyed said it would be difficult to regularly take their cans and bottles to a collection point.

The International Tin Association (ITA) and the Responsible Minerals Initiative (RMI), an initiative of the Responsible Business Alliance, have jointly developed and pub-lished new Assessment Criteria for Tin Smelting Companies, which clarify a common upstream and downstream view of due dili-gence requirements for the tin supply chain.

These Criteria are designed to align with the internationally recognised OECD due dili-gence guidance, assist with the new London Metal Exchange (LME) responsible sourcing requirements, and satisfy other upcoming requirements such as the EU Minerals Due Diligence Regulation.

The Criteria will be used by the RMI to replace their Tin Standard for the Responsible Minerals Assurance Process (RMAP) following a transition period, and will also set the requirements for responsible sourcing to be evaluated by new assessment processes under the ITA’s Code of Conduct.

“We are excited to announce this important step forward in progressing due diligence and responsible sourcing for the tin industry” said Kay Nimmo, head of sustainability at ITA.

“We are proud to be able to bring together multiple views of complex due diligence expectations into this one new harmonised text which will be recognised by assess-ment processes of both our organisations

Ardagh’s ‘ribbed’ can which keeps Jupiler beer cool in the hand won Best Can/ Alubottle at the 2019 World Beverage Innovation Awards.

The design saw Ardagh develop a new tooling technique to achieve super-defined debossed flutes in the walls of both the 330ml and 500ml Jupiler cans. The resulting ‘ribs’ disrupt the flow of air along the can body and reduce contact with the hand, which keeps the beer colder for longer.

In a neat additional benefit, the fluted design not only keeps the product colder for longer, it also echoes the characteristic Jupiler ribbed glassware. This shelf appeal helped the can achieve Finalist in the Best Packaging Design/Label category, to add to its win as Best Can/Alubottle overall.

The World Beverage Innovation Awards, which have been made annually since 2001,

Ardagh wins at 2019 WorldBeverage Innovation Awards

celebrate and highlight the most important beverage industry developments. Other Ardagh innovations to be recognised this year were the Nitro Canned cocktail range from Funkin Cocktails.

A finalist in the Best Beverage Concept category, Funkin Cocktails deployed Ardagh’s Nitro Can to make bar-quality cocktails avail-able off-the-shelf for the first time. The slim aluminium can features a nitrogen-infused widget which is activated on can opening to mix the cocktail instantly.

The cascading pour results in an attractive cocktail with a long-lasting foam head and the smooth, velvety sensation that is normally only achieved in a traditional cocktail shaker. The Nitro Can’s stable in-can environment guarantees shelf stability both in refrigerated and ambient temperatures.

and the market. This will not only improve risk management but will help to streamline information requests through the supply chain.”

“This further demonstrates the leadership of both ITA and the RMI, and their determi-nation to tackle the very significant chal-lenges involved in bringing the entire supply chain together to provide realistic but robust solutions for the responsible production and sourcing of tin,” said Leah Butler, vice president, Responsible Business Alliance.

The Criteria will enable audit firms and their individual auditors to conduct rigorous and consistent checks on whether any smelter has implemented OECD supply chain due diligence.

The Criteria results from co-operation between the ITA and the RMI as agreed in an MOU earlier in the year. Both organisations are continuing to work together to draft further guidance on Criteria expectations in a workbook format for use by auditors and/or smelters as the new Criteria are implement-ed. The development of associated training materials is also planned.

DECEMBER 2019/JANUARY 2020

Survey highlights consumer demand for sustainable packagingRecent research shows that today’s environmentally conscious shoppers expect more from packaging, especially when it comes to their beverage choices. It is no longer enough for packaging to only protect the product, be convenient and visually appealing, consumers are increasingly judging brands on their environmental credentials too.

According to Ball Corporation’s 2019 Consumer Survey, 73% of the respondents said they would choose environmentally friendly containers if they had a choice. 79% of the survey, which polled the key markets of Brazil, Spain, UK and the US, felt that companies should already be adopting environmentally responsible packaging.

In a further boost for sustainable solutions, 50% of the respondents said they would pay more for environmentally friendly packaging. And 78% of consumers expect all beverage brands to use environmentally friendly containers within the next five years.

As sustainability concerns continue to drive con-sumer shopping behaviour across all categories, aluminium cans are leading the way for the bever-age industry. For manufacturers, aluminium cans also provide brand positioning and potential growth opportunities. According to a Ball Customer Survey, also carried out in 2019, 73% of beverage makers agree that companies will look outdated if they do not have the most sustainable beverage containers within five years.

When it comes to sustainability, it is important to understand the true environmental credentials of alu-minium beverage cans, and its high recycling rates across Europe – currently at 74.5%, with 90% of

Prime Controls honoured at 2019 Business of the Year AwardsPrime Controls was honoured by the Dayton Business Journal in the Manufacturing category dur-ing the 2019 Business of the Year awards ceremony.

The award is one of the most coveted titles of the year, celebrating the region’s best in business. This is the fifth consecutive year that Prime Controls has been honoured as a finalist for Manufacturing Business of the Year.

During this year’s award ceremony, Prime Controls finished among the top three prominent manufactur-ing businesses in the region. Honourees were hand-picked by guest judges recognising the company’s

continued excellence in engi-neering and manufacturing high-quality products.

“The Prime Controls team is blown away to be honoured again for the fifth year in a row. We’re truly thrilled to be a part of this, especially with the manufacturing talent that is in the Dayton area,” said Beth Graves, President of Prime

Controls.“We are proud and fortunate to be a part of a

great community that is focused on and supports entrepreneurs and small businesses. We are excited and looking forward to the future and will continue to develop products that matter.”

aluminium collected in Europe recycled there too. In Brazil, the recycling rate for aluminium cans is 98%.

Aluminium is a true circular economy material, as cans may be recycled forever with no loss of quality. The can is the most recycled beverage container in the world, with 75% of aluminium ever produced still in use today. The process is simple too – collect, sort and melt – and all cans can be recycled over and over again, regardless of colour, format, size or design.

“Consumers want packaging solutions that they can trust will be actually recycled and used in new high-quality products – ideally in a never-ending cycle. With aluminium beverage can recycling at 74.5% and carried out in Europe, the can is a true recycling champion,” said Claudia Bierth, European sustainability manager, Ball Beverage Packaging Europe.

“Aluminium loses little material during the recy-cling process, retaining its quality every time it’s processed and using 95% less energy than primary production, making the can a poster child for the circular economy.”

DECEMBER 2019/JANUARY 2020

Using a system such as the three-horizon model used in BAMA’s Future of Aerosols 2 study, the aerosol industry specifi cally needs to explore where we are today, thinking about the current environment and sus-tainability pressures and what system could be used in the medium term to enable sus-tainable growth which reduces pressure on resources. And of course, it is also extremely important to consider what the aerosol and spray industry might look like in the longer term.

In the more immediate future, the much-vaunted EU Circular Economy Pack-age will require all those putting any form of product into the European economy to look at the hierarchy of sustainability – reduce, reuse, recycle – and to consider how their products might need to change. It is important to note that the hierarchy is in the order it is for a reason.

But it is also important to remember that there are many ways in which we can continue to de-velop our products whilst meeting ever-increas-ing environmental demands and continue to drive growth. Indeed, sustainability has many facets and continuing to provide people with well-paid and fulfi lling work is a very signifi cant element.

I have worked in the aerosol industry now for more than three decades and like most, it is an in-dustry which has evolved signifi cantly in that time. I suspect that it will be a very diff erent industry again in another 30 years’ time. I sincerely hope it will still, and believe it can, off er consumers safe, reliable and effi cacious products improving their health and wellbeing at that time. CT CC

As part of the British Aerosol Manufac-turers’ Association’s (BAMA) continued planning for the years ahead, the Asso-ciation is reviewing its fi ve-year strategy.

Part of this work has involved examining the poten-tial challenges which the UK aerosol industry may be faced with, as well as the opportunities that are likely to occur in that time, and into the future.

GLOBAL POSITION Globally, the aerosol industry continues to perform very successfully with almost continual year-on-year growth in all regions. This is especially true in mar-kets such as Brazil and Mexico, and many countries in the far east, most notably in China.

With continued growth however, come challenges which the industry must give the appropriate level of consideration. One such issue is the continuing discussion which is happening in all regions across the world, about indoor and outdoor air quality.

The aerosol industry is only a small contributor to emissions in both of these environments; we must be aware, however, that our contribution is grow-ing as a proportion of total emissions and is there-fore likely to become of interest to regulators and NGO’s in the years ahead.

Aerosol manufacturers, and their representatives to governments across the world, will need to pres-ent convincing arguments if we want to continue using the current combination of ingredients and packaging we have in the market today. Industry must also consider new ways in which it can off er consumers the same or new product experiences which can be produced and consumed in a more sustainable fashion.

and measured on actual two-piece cans and con-stitute a defined and achievable palette of colours to choose from at the point of design conception. As a result, there will be no unpleasant surprises, delays, unneeded expense or disappointment with the finished can or its place in the wider packaging solution.

Q. How have the Pantone LIVE colours for the two-piece Libraries been created?A. The Pantone colours were colour-matched against the same inks used in the production of two-piece cans printed with industry leading proofing equipment onto real two-piece cans and then var-nished using a standard gloss varnish. Everything produced was overseen by experienced two-piece colour-matchers and validated by Pantone.

Q. Why have two libraries been created?A. The level of opacity achieved by inks used in the two-piece printing process depends on pigment selection and the level of opaque white used in the ink formulation. This provides an opportunity to have both opaque and transparent (metallic looking) inks on the same printed can.

Q. How can customers be confident that the Pantone LIVE colours will be achievable in the two-piece production environment?A. The applied ink film weight, pigment selection and technical resistance properties follow an estab-lished industry standard for the production and processing of two-piece beer and beverage cans.

Q. How can customers get a physical sample of Pantone LIVE metal deco colour on a two-piece can?A. As the digital data has been captured for each Pantone LIVE colour, ink suppliers can use this

A new standard of proofing for two-piece cans

Q. Can you put the announcement of the new metal deco libraries into context?A. As with most industries, colours used in the two-piece can market have tended to revolve around the use of the Pantone Reference Library or brand colours. While the Pantone library offers a wide range of colour options when printed on paper, some of these colours may not be achievable when printed on other substrates, therefore requiring a compromise. For the two-piece can process, know-ing what is achievable when colour-matching inks has not been easy, as considerable experience of the process limitations is needed. Similarly, demon-strating what is achievable with two-piece inks during the pre-press process has generally taken time and the production of multiple colour options, eventually leading to something that matches the original concept.

The introduction of two-piece metal deco libraries into the wider Pantone LIVE environment means that, for the first time, we now have a rec-ognised global standard colour-target for Pantone colours. These “dependent libraries”, an “opaque” and a “transparent” version, have been created

Following the recent announcements by X-Rite, Pantone and Sun Chemical of two new metal deco dependent colour libraries for Pantone LIVE and by Sun Chemical and CGS of a new metal deco digital proofing solution for two-piece beverage cans, Iñaki Llona, global champion Metal Deco Inks, Sun Chemical, talks to CanTech International about what these developments could mean for can makers, designers and brand owners

information during the colour-matching process to ensure an accurate colour-match. Physical roll-outs can be produced at any location – the pro-duction plant, customer graphics centre or at the Sun Chemical Ink for Metal Packaging Colour Centre – and validated using a NetProfiled X-Rite Ci64 spectrophotometer, Colour iQC software and Pantone LIVE.

Q. How can a customer be sure that a rollout accurately represents a Pantone LIVE colour?A. All Sun Chemical rollouts representing Pantone LIVE colours will carry a “Pantone LIVE Preferred Partner” logo. This confirms that the rollout has been produced to the highest standard and is a correct colour-match to the digital data.

Q. Can brand colours be used on a digital print?A. Yes, a mix of Pantone LIVE and brand colours can be used on a digital print and the brand colours can be added to a digital database. Being able to provide accurate, achievable colours in the digital print format is a mandatory requirement, so cre-ating digital prints that may not be achievable in production would render the solution completely unsuitable.

Q. So how is the new digital proofing solution for two-piece beverage cans linked to the metal deco libraries?A. The pre-press approval process in the two-piece can industry has always used rollouts or colour swatches produced in a laboratory environment to create a colour target. This process has often involved searching through colour-books of inks printed on two-piece cans in the hope of finding a close match or interpretation of a Pantone or brand colour. If the desired colour can’t be found, a new colour-match has to be produced. Proofs then have to be supplied to the can maker, who approves the proofs according to their internal standards and then ships them to the brand owner or designer. They then provide feedback to the can maker, who in turn relays it to the ink supplier – for the process to be repeated until a suitable match is agreed.

Once the rollouts are finally approved, simpler, less complex designs can go to production, but more intricate designs need to go through the extra stage of being printed on the can maker’s proofing press before the approved design and colours can move into the production environment. Of course, each step takes time, but the process is designed to minimise the risk of failure or disappointment during the first production run.

With the introduction of these new metal deco Pantone LIVE libraries, it is now possible to move away from printing on two-piece cans for colour

and design approval. In partnership with CGS, Sun Chemical has created a digital proofing solution that can be used to print a colour accurate swatch and design layout onto clear film. This clear film can be placed around a standard two-piece can or onto a flat metallic film, perfectly detailing how the colour and design will look on a two-piece can production line.

Q. Where does the digital print enter the workflow?A. As multiple designs or colour options can be created in a fraction of the time and cost compared with rollouts or proof-press cans, the digital print can enter the workflow at any point after the design becomes part of the development process up until the can production environment, when the digital print can be used as the colour and layout target.

Q. Can the Pantone LIVE two-piece metal deco libraries and CGS Oris digital print solution be used regardless of the ink supplier used in the two-piece can production plant?A. Yes, Pantone LIVE is a set of achievable colour targets for the print industry and can be used with any ink supplier. Sun Chemical has matched all the inks used to create the Pantone LIVE two-piece metal deco library and these achievable Pantone LIVE colours can be utilized in the digital print solution offered in partnership with CGS. This is a clear advantage for accurate and short production lead times, regardless of the specific ink supplier for the production job.

Q. How is the final quality of the production cans affected?A. Using the digital proofing solution with Sun Chemical inks means superior quality and efficiency are achievable, when compared to visual approval alone. Reduced prepress times do not mean reduced quality.

Q. How would you summarise the potential impact of the announcements?A. For the first time, the industry is moving away from expensive, outmoded colour-books filled with a very limited number of provincial colour options that already exist in the two-piece can marketplace. Instead, the industry can now access a complete Pantone LIVE and digital print proofing solution with over 4,000 achievable two-piece colours and the option to add an almost infinite number of cus-tom brand colours. As the world’s largest pigment and ink manufacturer, Sun Chemical has worked with Pantone, the universal language of colour, to develop another innovative solution that expands the choice of can makers, designers and brand owners and sets a new standard in proofing. While materials like plastic and issues such as food waste have taken the brunt of public criticism

as the Blue Planet effect has matured, the real issues around sustainability affect all sectors and all materials.

The Blue Planet effect has become shorthand for the growing public desire to recycle more and to tackle plastic waste specifically. At the same time leg-islation and a wider public debate about waste and packaging than has ever been seen before, is driving greater material circularity.

And as more and more consumers attempt to limit their own waste and specifi-cally packaging footprint, the Circular Economy Package has simultaneously seen the review of several EU directives including three which are of particular relevance to the packaging sector: the Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive, the Waste Framework Directive and the Landfill Directive.

But what needs to change in our current approach to recycling and what do the latest recycling rates of steel for packaging reveal for our sector?

CHANGING LANDSCAPEIn the last five years, the packaging landscape has changed dramatically. The dual challenge of achieving the aims of the Circular Economy

Package and driving sustainability across all pack-aging formats is as high on the political agenda as it has ever been.

EU legislation adopted in May 2018 means that higher recycling targets will take effect for most packaging materials in 2025, along with the recognition of multiple recycling, as well as the introduction of specific legislation on single use plastics.

But when it comes to packaging, recyclable does not always mean ‘really recycled’. Indeed, when it comes to sustainability, current debate often focuses on the first-time production of steel, plastic or other packaging materials. Such linear economy thinking is outdated and ignores the fact that steel can be recycled over and over again, infinitely, with up to 70 per cent energy savings each time.

Secondary legislation, to be adopted by the European Commission (EC) and validated by mem-ber states in the coming years, will focus on the measurement point of recycling, as well as new reporting obligations. In the UK, national govern-ment consultations have focused upon reforming the packaging producer responsibility system and consistency in household, as well as business col-lection systems with the final proposals due to be made next year.

Circular economy legislation can therefore already be seen to be provoking a significant shift towards real recycling, and it is important to keep in mind the distinction between recyclable and really recycled. Just because packaging is marketed as

True circularity means multiple recycling and in this context it is possible to see that permanent materi-als like steel are used, not consumed, as they can be recycled infinitely. Across Europe, best practice shows that higher recycling rates are possible

recycled, does not necessarily mean it is in reality. For those considering the benefits of steel or any

other substrate for their packaging product, the key questions today are: is it recyclable in only a few places or widespread, how easy is to separate each part of the product, is it entirely recyclable or some parts difficult to recycle, how many times can it be recycled and is it economically viable to do so or is a subsidy required?

Real recycling means that recycling is integrated into a product’s design as well as using a material or substrate that can be collected and sorted efficiently. It means using material parts that can be sepa-rated easily or do not require separation and that the recycling process results in real environmental benefits. Critically, the output material from the recycling process must have real value.

Steel for packaging can therefore be seen to represent a proven model of circularity. Magnetic properties make steel the easiest and most eco-nomical packaging material to recover from any waste stream and as a permanent material it can be recycled indefinitely without loss of quality.

Indeed, the inherent chemical and physical prop-erties of steel do not change regardless of how many times it goes through the recycling process, meaning steel produced decades ago can still be recycled and used in the manufacture of new steel products.

The latest figures (2017 data) show that an average of 80.5 per cent of all steel packaging is recycled across Europe. Indeed, the industry has surpassed its own target, three years early. It’s also significant that all steel packaging segments are highly recycled. It’s not just the best performers like traditional food or beverage cans, but aerosols, closures and paint cans as well.

It is also important to reflect on the use of the recycling rate rather than recycled content as a measure of sustainability. Put simply, recycled con-tent is wholly focused on a product’s previous life. It does not guarantee the current product is designed to be recycled at the end of its life. However high the percentage of recycled content a product con-tains, if it isn’t recycled the embedded resources and energy go to waste.

True circularity means multiple recycling and in this context it is possible to see that permanent materials like steel are used, not consumed, as they can be recycled infinitely. Across Europe, best prac-tice shows that higher recycling rates are possible.

Four key recommendations are made within APEAL’s ‘Good practices in separate collection, sorting and recycling of steel for packaging’ report, to increase recycling. These include the encourage-ment of source separation and separate collection to achieve higher quality scrap collection and regulation of the incineration route.

cantechonline.com 17

STEEL

Secondly, establishing a quality standard for steel packaging scrap is key to delivering high quality packaging scrap and ensuring traceability, but qual-ity control must start at the sorting facility and a national standards system must be set.

Thirdly, transparent verification and reporting is vital, which means measuring ‘real recycling’ rates as well as adopting guidelines, definitions and strict reporting formats for EU member states along with implementing tracking and tracing systems for scrap.

And finally, we must remember that underpin-ning every successful recycling programme is wider consumer awareness.

Steel for packaging can play a key role in helping businesses and governments achieve true circularity. The sustainability credentials of steel make it the ideal packaging material for every market seeking to maximise real recycling and minimise waste. CT

people about the story behind cans we hope to improve the image of the consumer towards cans.

Of course, retailers play an important role; do you think that they will come to the same conclusion as you after the research?Ilonka Audenaerde, innovation manager, Retail Benelux: Of course, retailers play an impor-tant role in the sustainability discussion. After all, they determine the supply in the supermarket. We know that retailers themselves are also active in the field of sustainable packaging for their own brand. However, we also see that there are many misconceptions from category managers, for example. That’s why we also pay special attention in our stakeholder approach towards retailers.

Do you notice anything about policies changed by retailers based on sustainability consider-ations with regards to packaging? Arnaud Warusfel, Bonduelle Europe Long Life: We see many retailers commit themselves into getting more sustainable packaging within their

Changing consumer perceptions of cans

Was there a specific reason for this consumer survey, apart from the currently lively debate about sustainability?Ilonka Audenaerde, packaging development manager: At Bonduelle we pay attention towards sustainability in our whole chain from agro produc-tion towards consumer product and packaging. We regularly hear misconceptions about can packaging that we want to correct.

We wanted to know exactly what misconceptions there are and get a feel for how strong they are. We learnt that only 35 per cent of consumers are aware that the can is endlessly recyclable and no less than 58 per cent thinks that preservatives are used.

Do you think that the current plastic soup discussion plays a role in consumer percep-tions of, for example, canned vegetables?Friek van Helden, innovation manager Retail Benelux: It may well be because people are more open to hear about the sustainability of packs. So it’s a good moment to tell the good story behind cans.

The image of glass scores better in terms of environmental friendliness than that of cans for consumers – why is that?Van Helden: It’s logical because people themselves play an active role by bringing glass to the glass bin at the start of the recycling process. In reality, however, 96 per cent of steel cans are recycled, regardless of the waste stream from which it is collected, and with glass this percentage is lower, namely 86 per cent, talking about the Dutch market.

Cans have no loss of quality during the recycling process; you turn steel into new steel. With our acti-vation programme in the Netherlands, we want to make consumers aware that regardless of how they throw it away, the steel can will be collected from the waste stream in order to be recycled. supply chain. Some of them are announcing clear targets, including timing about packaging.

I know that the can industry has tried all kinds of actions and is still trying to communicate the excellent environmental friendliness score of cans to consumers, but this is a very difficult process.Audenaerde: It takes attention and time to process the perception of canned vegetables. The power of repetition remains important. We do believe that the time is right to tell more about cans as people are more open to hear about sustainability nowadays.

Of course the stickers that you put on cans are a wonderful message; is it Bonduelle’s intention to go even further, towards consumers and possibly also retailers? Audenaerde: Yes we will continue this message. The stickers on the cans is an initiative to convey the message directly to Bonduelle buyers. They already use cans and now know that cans are also endlessly recyclable. We hope to create more ambassadors with this. In addition to these stickers, we also hold various stakeholder conversations, including with retailers. In an open personal conversation, we can give the right attention to our message about canned vegetables. In addition, we also tackle misconceptions through social media in a playful manner, targeted on con-sumers.

In short, what do you think are necessary actions towards the market based on your consumer research? Van Helden: Repetition of the message that cans are endlessly recyclable. From various sides over a longer period, we hope that other manufacturers and

retailers will join us in this relevant message.

What would you expect from the can industry to support these actions?Warusfel: Openness. Explain and show what you make. Show what is good and where there is still improvement to make – first of all in recycling fig-ures. Recycling of steel packaging in Europe has hit 80.5 per cent in 2017, according to figures issued by APEAL. Looking then at the figure of 96 per cent in the Netherlands, we know there’s room to improve this. Another important factor is the fact that steel packaging in the EU has an estimated 58 per cent recycled content. The more cans we can collect, the more recycled content we can use to make new cans.

Moreover, there are still some opportunities to reduce the weight of the can due to the R&D made by the metal suppliers and the can makers. In Bonduelle, we have already achieved our 2019 objec-tive to reduce the quantities of metal for our cans, which was to save 1,500 tonnes of metal over three years within a constant scope.

Any further comments Bonduelle would like to make?Van Helden: The fact that the can is endlessly recy-clable makes it fit within a circular economy, which is good from a sustainable perspective. But next to this, canning is a very proven and sustainable technology being able to store vegetables, grown in the ground and harvested in season, at the peak of ripeness, for a longer period of time, while retaining as many nutrients as possible.

Eating vegetables in can is a great way for a lot of people to get their essential nutrients. And on top of this, it helps to prevent food waste as well. CT

offers for speciality tea products is providing an aesthetically pleasing alternative to cardboard.

“When the Lagom Teas team envisioned our perfect packaging, we saw a tea that was beautifully designed and had a very low environmental impact,” says Lauren D’Agostino, co-founder, Lagom Tea. “We want each person who drinks a cup of our CBD to feel proud that they chose a sustainable product with a seamless and inspiring design.”

The luxury feel of their aluminium tin, shares D’Agostino, makes their product ideal for high-end retailers and luxury customers who associate well-designed packaging with quality.

Packaging is not something that the tea and coffee industries take lightly. With the myr-iad of products in the marketplace, they need to find both a functional and attrac-

tive format that responds to its consumers’ values. This shift away from plastic has resulted in several companies moving towards aluminium. However, the drive for aluminium products goes beyond the sustainability story. These innovative packaging types can deliver tea and coffee products in a way that mirrors the experience received at a café. The end result is a package that is functional, attractive and sustainable.

CBD line that was both sturdy and sustainable. They initially considered cardboard, however, opted for aluminium for their outdoor packaging as it was a more practical product for eCommerce and could be easily recycled.

“Cardboard can be easily contaminated and has a finite number of times it can be recycled,” says D’Agostino. The aluminium containers provided Lagom Tea with an alternative that would both stand up to the wear and tear of mail delivery, while adhering to their sustainability principles.

researched several alternatives, including alumin-ium cans, PET single-serve containers, paper-board options and glass. The company ended up choosing aluminium as their core package based on both its on-the-go convenience and overall sustainability.

“We looked at consumer preference and usage occasions, as well as environmental impact when it came to selecting our core package type,” explains Traci Blakemore, director of operations, High Brew, Austin, Texas. Their line includes six cold brew skews that are packaged in an 8.5oz cans and Triple Shot coffee, that are packaged in a 12oz cans.

“The decision to produce High Brew in a can was a deliberate one,” says Blakemore. “High Brew is a cold brew for those who do and should easily accompany an active on-the-go lifestyle.

“We feel the convenience and shelf stability of the can nicely supports consumers who are busy living life.”

One of the challenges with packaging in the coffee industry is ensuring that the RTD version evokes a similar taste and experience to that of the café. This becomes increasingly more com-plicated with the speciality coffee offerings, in particular lattes and nitrogen-infused cold brew. La Colombe Coffee Roasters were faced with this challenge when they wanted to offer its cold brew lattes in a can format. Before choosing the final format, the company needed to ensure that the consumers received the same frothy, iced latte experience that was being offered in their cafés.

The result involved months of research, taste tests, and several beta cans that culminated in developing a new can technology in partner-ship with Crown Holdings, which delivered the texture experience that CEO and co-founder, Todd Carmichael was seeking. To get the desired result, the company needed to inject nitrous oxide through a valve at the bottom of the can. As soon as the can is opened, the system creates tiny bubbles and frothy texture. By using nitrous oxide instead of nitrogen, La Colombe was able to deliver this unique texture experience. The nitrous oxide brings forward the natural sweet-ness in both cream and milk. The can, which has been dubbed the InnoValve Can, uses the pat-ented Scheindel Universal Grommet valve from Ultramotive.

When designing the can; Carmichael also wanted to ensure that drinking from it delivered the same tactile experience as sipping from a cup in the café. To do so, he developed a lip guard, which is made from recyclable plastic, and manu-ally applied to all of the cans at the La Colombe facility.

“Our goal is to expose the simple ingredients of a Draft Latte in a delicious and approachable

way,” says Kathryn O’Connor, SVP of marketing at La Colombe Coffee Roasters. “It’s smooth cold brew coffee mixed with creamy foamed milk – the drink most often enjoyed in our cafes every day, and also available in a can in retailers across the country.”

Station Cold Brew, Toronto, Ontario, is another company whose desire for a unique bev-erage experience resulted in the creation of an innovative canning process. However, the compa-ny didn’t start with cans; in fact, in the beginning, they delivered their beverage experience in glass bottles and kegs. The company, who were going for more of a retro vibe, initially looked at amber glass bottles. However, the challenge with recy-cling amber glass motivated the company to look at the potential of cans. “Recycling glass isn’t as clear cut as people think it is,” says Mike Roy, brewmaster, Station Cold Brew Coffee, Toronto, Ontario. “Cans are 100 per cent recyclable all of the time.”

When it came to packaging, Station Cold Brew knew that plastic was not an option.

“As soon as we mentioned the word plastic to our buyers; they said don’t even bother,” says Mitchell Stern, co-founder, Station Cold Brew. “Hearing it direct from our buyers solidified that we were on the right track.”

Canning required a significant upfront invest-ment, and so initially, Station Cold Brew opted for glass containers. However, there were barriers with this format, including inconsistent recycling practices and merchandising limitations.

“Cans are much easier to merchandise than glass bottles,” says Stern. “You can create inno-vative displays that allow the product to jump out from all of the others on the shelf.”

It was their nitro cold brew format that pro-pelled Station Cold Brew to research aluminium cans. “We wanted to obtain a beer style pour with coffee, and the only way to do this was through a can,” says Roy. “The challenge was finding an aluminium can that was able to deliver the final product experience that we were seeking.”

Their journey resulted in Station Cold Brew connecting with both co-packers and beer com-panies with the hope of discovering the right solution for their new product line. In particular, the company required a nitrogen-infused process without the carbonation that was standard in beers and soft drinks.

“Nitrogenation isn’t new to beer companies,” says Roy. “But there was a very specific process to infusing nitro cold brew into cans, and it took a while to develop a packaging format that would do this.”

In the end, Station Cold Brew invested in creating its packaging line because there really wasn’t one in their area that responded to their

needs. This included eventually moving towards an automatic canning line and the decision to add a co-packing division to their company so that they could offer their process to other beverage companies across Canada.

Fast forward to today, and Station Cold Brew is expanding its product line beyond coffee. “We recently launched a functional beverage platform of sparkling iced teas all made from Cascara,” shares Stern. “The product is completely different than what is being offered from other iced tea companies and is an exciting addition for those consumers who are looking for better for your products.”

The initial response of the new product line, which launched this past October, has been extremely positive.

The speciality tea and coffee sectors are continually evolving, including innovative formats and delivery experiences. These companies are actively seeking partner-ships with packagers that will aid them in replicating the café beverage experience in an on-the-go format.

For these innovative companies, alu-minium packaging has been their go-to solution providing an option that is easily recycled, aesthetically pleasing and functional. CT

ASIA CANTECH REVIEW

DECEMBER 2019/JANUARY 2020

This year’s Asia CanTech was an impor-tant milestone in the history of Bell Publishing, as the company celebrated 20 years.

Since the company was formed in 1999 with the purchase of CanTech International from the US, Bell Publishing has expanded with the launch of Food & Drink Technology, the acquisition of Dairy Industries International (founded in 1936), and in 2008, the purchase of Confectionery Production (first published in 1934). The company launched the Sweets & Savoury Snacks World website to accompany Confectionery Production in 2011.

In 2016, Bell acquired Tea & Coffee Trade Journal and the leading exhibition, Tea & Coffee World Cup, to accompany Asia CanTech and CanTech The Grand Tour.

“It gives Neil and I great pleasure to cele-brate 20 years of Bell Publishing in Bangkok, the spiritual home of Asia CanTech,” said Sarah McRitchie, editorial director at Bell Publishing. “Bell was founded with the acquisition of CanTech International, so it was great to celebrate that milestone with the can making industry.”

Celebrating 20 years at Asia CanTech

The 2019 edition of Asia CanTech saw Bell Publishing celebratea special anniversary. Here is a round-up of the show,

which took place from 28-30 October in Bangkok, Thailand

Day one of Asia CanTech kicked off with the first session of the tabletop exhibition, and the opening reception and dinner, which commemorated the anniversary of Bell Publishing with a dinner river cruise.

Asia CanTech award winners On day two, Crown Bevcan and Closures of Thailand scooped the prestigious Supreme Cup at this year’s Asia CanTech Awards, with its Cheers Selection Riceberry Selection can.

The awards, which took place at the gala dinner, celebrated the achievements of can makers in South East Asia.

Due to its attractive branding and use of matt varnish, it was decided that Crown Bevcan and Closures of Thailand was the deserved winner. The product itself is particularly interesting, as this beer is an imported malt that combines signature Thai Riceberry purple rice, in the form of a European style dark lager.

Although a difficult decision for our judges, they were all unanimous in its decision to award this particular can the Supreme Cup. Our judges said: “It’s impressive to see craft beer technology, adapt-ing digital printing as a concept. Often, due to the small batch sizes, fillers have favoured labelling, so it’s nice to see an attractive beverage two-piece can with a lovely matt finish.”

The Riceberry selection can also won the award in the two-piece beverage can section.

The full list of winners in the Asia CanTech awards were as follows:Beverage two-piece: Crown Bevcan and Closure (Thailand) Co (Riceberry Beer)Beverage three-piece: ORG Technology Co. (Happy New Year)Decorative/Speciality: Benjamit Packaging Co (Guitar Can)Ends/Caps/Closures: Easy Open Lid Industry Corp (End)

Candid Forum and show highlightsAs well as the awards, one of the highlights of the show was undoubtedly the Candid Forum, which as promised, was an informative session. This year, Richard Moore, managing director RMRM Consultancy; Sonia Perna Darghouth, marketing director Asia, Sherwin-Williams, and Bob Gary, chief operating officer, Stolle Machinery ensured a vibrant hour was undertaken.

A number of pertinent industry discussions were undertaken, including debating the issues of the can making industry’s CO2 emissions, the issues of sustainability, mental health and the state of the three-piece food can market.

On the show presentation side, 2019’s keynote speaker was Kamoldist Smuthkochorn, managing director of marketing for Carabao Group Public Company. Smuthkochorn begun his presentation by outlining the history of Carabao. The energy drink, meaning buffalo, derives from Thai rock star Yuenyong Opakul. He is the vocalist for the band Carabao, who 15 years ago, decided with a close friend to set up an energy drinks company. The company’s slogan is ‘Songs gave them hope, Carabao gives them energy’. The energy drink now outstrips Red Bull in Thailand, and has grown to be a global brand, including sponsoring Chelsea Football Club and Reading Football Club in the UK.

The rapid growth of Carabao was probably the most revealing of his presentation. Founded in

2002, in 18 months they became number two in the market in Asia. In 2004 they were exporting to 15 countries and began canning. The afore-mentioned sponsorship of Chelsea managed to project the drinks company onto the next level, which has meant the company has now sold 900 million cans internationally in 2019, with a value of $2.7 billion value.

Smuthkochorn was also keen to stress how mar-keting has been essential in projecting the brand. The sponsorship of the English football league competition, known today as the ‘Carabao Cup’, has been instrumental in broadcasting the brand to 200 territories around the globe; the Carabao Cup final was reportedly broadcast to over two

billion people globally. The company now plans to be the number one

drinks brand in Thailand, and the number one in ASEAN by 2022. The five-year plan is to be number one in Asia by 2024; an ambitious but potentially achievable target.

Elsewhere, there was a revealing presentation from SLAC Group’s Richard Moore. Moore presented to delegates, where the formal launch of SLAC Group’s The Boxer Bodymaker was brought to the attention of delegates.

With twice the output of conventional body-makers, Moore was able to highlight the merits of the machine, ahead of Metpack next year, where attendees will be able to view the machine. Moore also highlighted other advantages of The Boxer, including the ability for less floor space, energy use per can reduced by half, and a low amount of vibration.

Similarly, CarnaudMetalbox Engineering had exciting product news to tell delegates. Its new Reformat Decorator, explained Marc Hoche, sales manager, was ready to be viewed at Crown’s Custines plant in France. With a robust risk assess-ment undertaken, and a wealth of new features including a ‘safe speed’ capability, this 2,000 cans per minute decorator has understandably excited those at CMB.

Other features of the decorator include improved access to all eight inkers, an integrated wash-up system and rear mounted servo motors. It’s based on the principals of the Reformat brand which means, less tools required for changeovers, easy access, common fittings, light weighted parts, sustainable and efficient operation, smart tablet control, remote monitoring, energy efficiency and quick release points.

The addition of Servo Registration reduces the manpower required and increases registration accuracy. A single operator will now be able to register the plate cylinders from the HMI panel, instead of manually adjusting each one with help of a colleague.

Sun Chemical has collaborated with CGS Publishing Technologies International GmbH, a global leader in colour management, digital proofing and specially formulated media, to pro-vide a metal deco digital proofing solution for two-piece beverage cans.

This digital proofing solution, part of Sun Chemical’s DigiProof service within its SunColorBox colour management toolkit, will enable can makers, designers and brand owners to dispense with physical aluminium wet proofs and to significantly reduce the length of the pack-aging design process – from weeks to just days.

Trelleborg Printing Solutions introduced and shared the benefits of Trelleborg printing blan-kets dedicated to metal packaging and discuss how to select the correct solution to maximise productivity and press performance.

Pneumofore introduced its centralised vacuum and compressed air solutions for can lines with the presentation ‘No Air, No Cans’ by president, Daniel Hilfiker. The discussion focused on var-ious topics, including the full PLC monitoring integration in can factories; the Variable Speed operation of vacuum pumps and compressors; the optimised efficiency as result of precise pres-sure level setting; and the advantages of the low pressure loop.

Hilfiker highlighted the importance in consider-ing the operating costs over 10 years, the extended performance warranties and the environmental impact before purchasing a new vacuum or com-pressed air system.

Looking ahead to Asia CanTech 2020Bell Publishing has announced that the dates and location are now confirmed for Asia CanTech 2020. The event will take place in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. The hotel location will be announced early in 2020.

marketing directors and packaging technologists from the whisky distillery Edrington, the cognac house Camus, the drinks multinationals Diageo and Pernod Ricard.

The programme is set to cover key topics in the market such as sustainability in the luxury world, packaging’s role in the digital transformation, new approaches to improving speed to market and a number of design-led trends such as the role of brand storytelling in packaging development or new design codes for generation Z.

PLD’s partnership with the Pentawards, the world’s biggest packaging design competition, re-inforces the importance of design agencies in the drinks packaging world.

Crucially, PLD is not alone; it will be co-locat-ed with ADF – Aerosol & Dispensing Forum and PCD – Packaging of Perfume, Cosmetics & Design. And the co-location of the three events will create a number of opportunities for both buyers and sup-pliers in the three markets to learn about each oth-ers’ technologies, innovations and inspirations.

It’s not just all about the talks, though – for packaging specifiers and buyers, ADF&PCD and PLD has been designed to offer an opportunity for sourcing new packaging innovations, meeting new suppliers and clients and finding inspiration for their next packaging project.

On the sourcing front, more than 700 suppliers in total will be exhibiting across the three shows. Two tours – the Eco Tour and the Made in France tour, will be on offer to visitors to guide them to specif-ic types of supplier. The Innovation & Technolo-gy Theatre offers a place for visitors to hear about the latest launches from exhibitors. And the ADF& PCD Awards highlights the very best new launches in the year.

Meanwhile, networking and inspiration are key parts of the visitor experience at the event, with networking hours on the PCD Champagne Bar and mixology demonstrations on the PLD Cocktail Bar. What better way to kick off the New year in style! CT CC

Packaging for premium and luxury drinks such as wine, champagne and spirits may not appear at first glance to be an obvious market for metal packaging. Glass, after all,

is the principal primary packaging material. Labels play a crucial role too. But look to the secondary packaging and a world of opportunities and great examples of metal packaging emerge.

Many of those will be on show at the new event PLD – Packaging of Premium and Luxury Drinks, which takes place on 29-30 January 2020 at Paris Expo Porte de Versailles, France. With exhibitors such as Crown Speciality Packaging and Virojan-glor among the principal exhibitors at the event, plus metal label printers such as Applic’Etains, the possibilities of metal packaging for designers, marketers and packaging technologists to add value to their product will be front and centre.

ADDING VALUESo, what is PLD all about? Put simply, it is a new event designed to help anyone involved in creating packaging for premium and luxury drinks to source and develop their next packaging project. The event has been designed to attract full teams of packaging specifiers from distilleries, wineries and other drinks producers – from brand management and design teams to their colleagues in packaging R&D and

purchasing.That means that along-

side a wide range of opportunities to meet with new and existing suppliers, visitors to the event will be able to discover the latest innovations in the market and to hear about the lat-est thinking on design and packaging development from a number of top brands in drinks packaging. Speakers already confirmed include senior designers,

Association said: “Although increasing competi-tion makes it harder, the market niche is still large enough for small and independent breweries with a regional focus to come onto the market and develop further.”

In the US, craft breweries grew by four per cent to achieve a market share by volume of 13.2 per cent, with output of 300 million litres. The US, pre-viously the home of craft beer has seen a slowing of growth. According to Mintel, 54 per cent of all new craft beers in 2017 came from Europe, compared to only 19 per cent from North America. There is strong growth in canned craft beers in the US, at 40.7 per cent in 2018, compared to 31.5 per cent in 2017.

FLEXIBILITY IS KEYCraft brewers require quite a lot from their equip-ment – it needs to have a small footprint, be flexible for quick changeovers, cope with smaller volumes and be economically viable at cost per unit.

At Brau, Wild Goose Canning presented a range of add-ons for its Evolutions series of canning lines. The WG3-CE Quickchange System offers pro-ducers maximum flexibility to shift easily between can formats and sizes. The changeover is easily

Today, craft breweries are choosing cans. And what’s not to love about them? They block the light, they’re airtight, they’re infinitely recyclable, and offer

a 360° canvas of colour and effects from photo- realistic imagery to tactile finishes.

A GROWING MARKETThe prevalence of craft brewing has risen expo-nentially over the last few years. Five years ago, it was almost unheard of to see small brands in major supermarkets, but now every store has a different range available, from ready-to-drink cocktails and beer, to sodas and kombucha.

Globally, according to Plato Logic, craft beer out-put came to 7.4 billion litres in 2018, around 3.8 per cent of global beer consumption.

Johnny Forsyth, associate director Mintel Food & Drink, says: “Craft is the ‘new premium’ in beer, and consumers are happy to pay more for small-er-batch, hand-crafted options. For these consum-ers, craft beer taps into their desire for new experi-ences with a nod to the past for inspiration, offering new beer styles that they have never drunk before.”

There is no sign the craft beer trend is weaken-ing. Bob Pease, president and CEO of the Brewers

accomplished by one person in about half an hour. The Quickchange system is retrofi ttable to all Wild Goose Canning Evolution Series, WGC-100 and WGC-250 systems.

Other launches by Wild Goose include the ‘Buff y’ Product Buff er Tank to counteract high pressure eff ects of long brite-to-fi ller transfer dis-tances; a DO Buster to minimise the amount of dissolved oxygen in beverages during the packag-ing process; and a High Temperature CIP system that allows sanitation up to temperatures of 82°C.

IC Filling showcased its new 661 EPV Auto-matic canning line, that is smaller and faster than previous versions. Currently used by soft drinks and craft beer producers, the fi lling and seaming line is made for bottles, but is easily adapted for cans in one swift change.

Comac and CFT have collaborated on their fi rst joint venture on the Smart Can 8-1, which uses gravity fi lling instead of pressure to fi ll cans. It’s not yet on the market as the company is still developing the valves to carry out this method of fi lling. The machine is entirely electronic with eight bars and one seamer it is capable of fi lling up to 3,000 cans per hour.

The company also presented its augmented re-ality (AI) system for its machines. Currently only available on the K1 and K2 kegging machines, but soon available for other machines including the Smart Can 8-1, the AI system enables users, via a smartphone or tablet, to install a machine themselves and carry out troubleshooting and ser-vicing, without needing to call out specialists.

“Mainly, there will be a saving in terms of costs, augmented reality will allow everyone to autono-mously fi x the small maintenance issues, without the expense of calling a technician on site. More-over, our Service & Customer Care Department will be at our customers’ complete disposal in case of need,” explains Alessandro Doglio, product manager at Comac. “Also, it will not be necessary to print the entire manual, because the custom-er will only read on screen the necessary lines: a green-oriented choice.”

For the at-home brewer, Twin Monkeys Bever-age Systems presented its newest – and smallest – canning line yet. The Mancos is an automated tabletop machine capable of 5-15 cans per minute of any size, including large 32oz ‘crowlers’. An optional tech pack adds post-seam rinse-dry, auto-mated tank pressure controller, automated fi ller raise and fobbing jet.

Josh Van Riper, Twin Monkey Beverage Sys-tems CEO, said: “More and more we are seeing the evolution of small

cantechonline.com 35

breweries using Crowler cans in their taproom and brewhouses as a source of incremental in-come. “We think the Mancos is a great way for a brewery to see what the appetite is for cans at their facility without having the exorbitant cost of most canning lines.”

NEW PARTNERSHIPSOn the opposite of the spectrum in terms of com-pany size, Ball has expended its North American partnership with Cask to help craft brewers in Eu-rope bring their products to market and expand their businesses.

Russell Love, president, Cask Global Canning Solutions, says: “With our partnership with Ball Corporation now expanding into Europe, we’ll be able to do there what we’ve done in nations around the globe: help craft brewers put their cre-ations in cans, boost their sales and beer freshness, and transform the perception of canned beer.”

A spokesperson from Ball notes: “We work with our customers, big and small, to help them achieve their packaging ambitions. In North America, Ball has been partnering with Cask, by providing Cask with a wide range of endlessly recyclable al-uminium cans; and in turn, Cask provide aff ord-able canning solutions for small to medium scale

breweries, wineries, cider mills and drink manufacturers worldwide.

“After working together for nearly twenty years to provide

canning systems and cans to craft brewers in North Amer-ica, Cask and Ball will now

bring this partnership to craft beverage makers in Europe.”The next edition of BrauBeviale will take place 10-12 Novem-

cans for CannedWater4Kids, a non-profit organisa-tion providing clean water initiatives globally. More importantly, aluminium is “infinitely recyclable and easy to sort and recycle through a well-established and efficient infrastructure,” she adds.

For non-profits and charities, the need to demon-strate good practice in a clear way is important for their reputation and fund raising, and when it comes to aluminium, the data is clear The Aluminum Association argues that aluminium “more than pays for its own recycling in the consumer and industri-al waste stream” because demand for aluminium continues to skyrocket and recycling aluminium saves more than 90 per cent of the energy required compared to producing new metal.

Ball Corporation’s canned water donations to aid relief efforts following disasters such as wildfires, hurricanes and floods, worth nearly $100,000 in 2019 to November, amounting to more than three million cans.

“We donate canned water, primarily in north and central America, in partnership with our customers,” Ms Robinson said, with Ball sup-plying the cans to donor companies who fill and distribute the packaging to needy people. Partners include, but are not limited to, US-based breweries MillerCoors, Maui Brewing and Oskar Blues – all in 12oz aluminium beverage cans.

A spokesperson for the WFP told CanTech

Metal cans play an important role in enabling aid agencies to deliver food and drink to needy people in dis-aster zones and areas of food scar-

city – being sturdy, stackable, and recyclable. The scale of some of these operations and hence their demand for canned food and drink is huge. The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) alone purchased 3.6 million tonnes of food in 2018, and the agency used 18m cans in 2018.

CONTRIBUTING TO DEMANDLooking ahead, the demand for metal cans by aid and disaster agencies may grow because of the increasing requirements within such organisations to become more sustainable and environmentally friendly. Indeed, the properties of aluminium cans especially make this material ideal for internation-al donor agencies delivering food and water aid, says Renee Robinson, the director for corporate communications at Colorado, USA-based metal packaging specialist for food, beverage and the aerospace sector, Ball Corporation.

She explains: “Cans are superior for water donations because they are lightweight, durable and provide product protection.”

Moreover, they are also stackable and have a high cubic efficiency, making them cost-effective to transport, says Robinson, whose company supplies

International that it uses metal cans available on the market - from 0.2kg to 1kg for solid commodities and four litres for liquid commodities, to handle food deliveries.

“Metal cans need to be suitable for the food that is packed inside like fish, meat, pulses, and oil,” the spokesperson says adding: “Depending on the commodity, we might need a tamper evidence or easy opening feature.”

For WFP supplies, metal containers must be coat-ed internally and externally with lacquers appropri-ate for the product and the finished product must be hermetically-sealed during filling. And for the WFP, “The main benefit of using metal cans is related to the specific process of preserving food in airtight packaging, which allows for a longer shelf life,” the spokesperson adds.

The WFP sources canned food and drink from food manufacturer suppliers, whether as donations or bought with WFP funds, the spokesperson says: “It’s the responsibility of our food manufacturers to procure packaging, and the WFP doesn’t interact directly with packaging suppliers.”

Instead, the WFP defines packaging minimum requirements including mechanical performance, safety, dimensions, and barrier properties, based on supply chain requirements, programme needs, costs and availability worldwide.

One WFP partner, based in Alberta, Canada, called the Earth Group, which sells locally-sourced water, tea and coffee, with its profits being donated to the WFP, has been switching its water products, called Earth Water, from being sold in plastic bottles, to aluminium containers because of their recyclability.

An Earth Group comment stresses that on average these containers have “70 per cent recycled content, which is more than three times the amount in a glass or plastic bottle”. They are also “light-weight, stackable and strong, allowing us to package and transport more beverages using less material,” notes the Earth Group.

Meanwhile, a spokesperson from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) referred to commodity requirements list-ed by the United States Department of Agriculture when it comes to canned food. For example, “a four-litre cylindrical-style can needs to be “clean, sanitary, and suitable for vegetable oil” for it to be acceptable for USAID projects.

Steel, aluminium and other metals utilised to make these cans needs to meet all USA Food and Drug Administration (FDA) “guidelines for safe contact with food for human consumption while being durable enough to withstand long periods of stacking in warehouses”, said the spokesperson.

COMPANY HELPCompanies can and do make their own charitable

canned food and drink supplies. The US’ Anheuser-Busch, the major American brewer, converts pro-duction to make disaster supplies. In May 2019, Anheuser-Busch produced and delivered more than 150,000 cans of emergency drinking water to communities in Missouri and Oklahoma impacted by flooding. Supplies are sent to Anheuser-Busch wholesaler partners who work with the Red Cross to get the cans to those in need. Both the com-pany’s Cartersville, Georgia, and Fort Collins, Colorado brewery regularly pause beer production to can drinking water, creating products that can be sent to disaster locations. In 2018, the brewer shut down beer lines to produce 300,000 cans of drinking water for victims of that year’s devastating Hurricane Michael in Florida and Georgia.

CannedWater4Kids founder Gregory Stromber told CanTech that the cans they use must be “com-patible with the inside linings and the type of water you are sourcing”, taking account of the water’s acidity and alkalinity as well as mineral content.

He stresses that properly made, cans for water are more effective than plastic water bottles: In cans “water is protected from light, very securely packagde and water cools down faster in cans plus it tastes better even after 10 years or longer,” Stromberg explains. “It is way better than plastic, an aluminium can when recycled can end up back on store in as little as 60 days.”

An Ardagh note stresses water sold in cans is becoming popular in the US and the company is making use of this rise in demand, offering an innovative range of metal cans for the food and beverage sector, which can potentially be useful for donor programmes. Its Thermo Impact range offer temperature-sensitive pigments that change colour based on pre-defined metrics and its Reveal Impact range that reveals a message when the temperature of products changes within cans.

This kind of technology can aid inventory man-agement, which is of key importance to aid agen-cies who need to be ready to supply canned food and drink to disaster zones. Steve Davis, the owner of Maryland, US-based logistics consultants All Hands Consulting, notes how agencies need be sure that products they have available are not out of date, which can be a major job for organisations that stockpile large amounts of canned food and drink in warehouses. “If they get their buying poli-cies wrong, then these canned products might have to be discarded, an expensive mistake,” he notes.

As a result, some aid groups “like to use vendors to carry the cost” of ensuring inventory is always up to date. The smart move for these suppliers is monitoring the age of canned drinks and food earmarked for potential use by aid organisations, so when they get too close to their sell-by date, they are sold on to standard food retailers and replaced with fresh supplies. NEW EQUIPMENT

Belvac makes traditional, proven deco-rating processes and infuses them with improvements that are said to ensure

quality, performance, and cost savings. Belvac has a culture of continuous improve-ment in all its equipment and that promotes pinpoint focus on supporting its customer’s needs for both quality and efficiency.

Belvac manufactures six and eight col-our decorators with speeds ranging from 600 cans to 2,200 cans per minute (CPM). The modular design allows for easy speed upgrades to match the production capabilities required. Other features include Direct Laser Engraving (DLE) and Computer To Plate (CTP) technology. This technology allows under sur-face engraving, opening up a whole new meth-od of printing cans with high resolution. Belvac technology also has the capability to remove any cans that are not varnished or have inside contamination and provide operator warning.

The Belvac 8RS6–2200, Belvac’s flagship Modular Decorator, is capable of running at 2,200cpm with an eight colour print appli-cation. The eight Inker Units and the Reverse Over-Varnish Unit fea-ture quick-change gravure rollers. Furthermore, the 8RS6-2200 Decorator is able to run production with improved graphics on cans by utilising laser regis-tration. Operator friendly set-ups, quick-change capabilities, and reduced wash time add to the decorator’s efficiencies. The 8RS6–2200 Decorator is designed for the highest quality print capability and the lowest cost of operation.

Process improvements driving customer savings on the Belvac Modular Decorator are numerous.

The vertical infeed design, in many cases, increases speed by up to 200cpm with reduced imperfections and is also available as an upgrade kit for many existing Rutherford type decorators. It has split upper guides for quick diameter change capabilities, a stepless length change feature, a volume vacuum pump, and bearing stabilised star wheel. The spindledisk has a linear slide significantly improving print quality with higher detail. It is extremely flat ensuring all mounted mandrels print with the same pressure, and has an independent can carrier ring.

The decorator design allows for lower print pressure, lower maintenance, reduced down-time, and quicker changes. Optional auto lube is also available. The mandrel has Diamond Like Coating. The air and vacuum drum is seg-mented for ease of maintenance. The Varnish Unit runs reverse and is designed to minimise spray, while engineering improvements reduce overall varnish usage. The entire system has flat disk transfers. This means no bushings and no maintenance.

The Belvac Inker Unit runs with unique features that further reduce operating costs including improved lubrication and ease of lubrication, oscillation, and enhanced

cooling features. The wash up is in the middle of the unit, not at the bottom, and this makes clean up faster and more efficient. It also has three form rollers eliminating ghosting and the need for double bumping.

These are just a few of the engineer-ing features that drive exceptional performance, quality, and cost savings. The Belvac Decorator is well worth a review to see how the engineering improvements can drive improved quality and deliver the highest ROI for your decorating needs.

Belvac Decorating Systems also offers complete Rutherford decorator machine rebuilds, known as Leapfrog Projects. These rebuilds incorporate all new mechanical and electronic components and systems. Like the new 8RS6-2200 machine, rebuild customers have the option of incorporating all of the component system improvements, offering a

good-as-new and improved Decorator with minimal can line disruption.

Belvac Decorating Systems offers multiple innovations designed to improve exist-

ing Decorators such as the Spindle Disk and the Linear Spindle Disk, the Universal Coupler, Two

Form and Three Form Roller Inker, the Wash-up System, the Vacuum Infeed Unit, the Brush

Assembly, and fixtures to assist and keep operators safe during the operation of

Decorators. Additionally, the Belvac RSC-1800 Basecoater

is capable of applying base coats to steel or aluminium cans at speeds up to 1,800cpm with easy access for maintenance and quick changeovers.

Torus’ new Z340 Coating Analyser series is offering customers upgrades to coating and lacquer inspection.

The dual gauging system is now equipped with two spectrometers. Visible light is used to measure internal lacquer and over varnish on non-decorated cans. In addition to this, new routines have been devel-oped for the measurement of reverse dome walls and rim coat for the first time.

Near Infrared (NIR) light is used to enable measurement of opaque internal lacquers and over varnishes on decorated cans, negating the effects of coloured inks. The two aspects of the gauge can measure simultaneously without compromising running speeds.

The improved Z340 also operates using a new fibre set up creating a smaller spot size to optimise measurement of rim coat and reverse wall with dedicated tooling to enable precise location of measurement positions on both features.

Videojet launches 90 degree printhead Videojet, a producer of coding and marking technology, has introduced its latest CIJ prod-uct development, a 90° adjustable printhead, which has been designed specifically for use with the Videojet 1860 continuous inkjet print-er, enabling manufacturers to easily adjust the printhead when their coding configuration changes.

With the 1860 printer, Videojet integrates leading on-board intelligence and communi-cation abilities with technology elements to help meet the ever evolving and expanding needs of manufacturers. The latest printhead development has been designed to address the need to be able to adjust the line configu-ration in order to process different pack sizes and SKUs without requiring different printer hardware.

The 1860’s optional 90° printhead further enhances manufacturers’ needs for flexibility when looking to integrate the printhead into a production line. If the printer relocates to an alternate production line, this printhead requires just a simple readjustment as needed.

Sencon develops leaktesting for ends

Additionally, in situations when a straight umbilical is oriented vertically pointing down or horizontally, the bend of the umbilical can put stress and on the wires and tubing inside. In the vertical application instead of having an upside down U-shape from the umbilical, the umbilical can be horizontal from the printhead. It would be a similar case for the horizontal positioning as well. The 90° design reduces the amount of bend required to integrate into small spaces, limiting the potential for damage to the wiring. In particular, this is of benefit in traversing applications which can stress the umbilical repeatedly.

The adjustable printhead also uses a ratch-eting design that offers 350° of movement. The space-saving design enables the print-head to integrate around the customer’s line instead of the customer needing to rearrange their line to fit the printer.

The 45° slanted design feature on the face of the printhead delivers increased versatility through better line integration, with more mounting options providing closer proximity to

Sencon has developed its latest on-press light tester specially adapted for food ends.

“Sencon’s ELTP (End Light Tester Package) detects pinholes and cracks in ends while they are still on the conversion press belt. It has been the most widely used solution for detecting leaks in beverage ends during production for over 20 years. The latest design is now also suit-able for easy open food ends. Systems have already been installed for round, ¼ club, Hansa, ham can, and large pear-shaped ends, with other shapes available on request,” said Sencon in a statement.

“As large food ends tend to be quite flexible, keeping them tight against a light seal on the leak detector was an engineering challenge. Sencon has developed a unique vacuum-driven Seal-and-Release system to hold the ends stable while being tested. So, food end makers can now also benefit from 100% on-press product inspection.”

the product on the line. The printhead can get as close as 2mm to the product, even in gable top or other angled packaging applications, enabling crisper, higher quality codes.

The new nozzle system features a predictive gutter build-up sensor, and provides advance notice of the most common potential fault conditions. Alert notifications are displayed on the printer and can be sent to a smart device, allowing for pre-emptive corrective action during line changeover or other planned production stoppage. In addition, the 1860s fluid system features a make-up reserve tank, which can keep the printer in action for up to a full shift, even if a supplies refill alert goes unsanctioned.

Skin4Can gives peace of mind for can hygiene

EMS group has introduced its new protective coating for cans which guaran-tees that the whole surface of the container remains sealed for the full shelf life of the product. It also overcomes issues such as contamination, technical compatibility and aesthetics. Skin4Can was presented by EMS Group at Brau Beviale 2019.

Skin4Can is a polymer coating based on an application system distributed by the group

Trivium’s Hansa seafood can named WorldStar winnerTrivium Packaging’s Hansa shaped seafood can for Orkla Foods Norge’s Stabburet mack-erel filet has been named as a coveted WorldStar winner, capping an outstanding year for this can and the team behind it.

“Having been pronounced ‘Can of the Year”, crowned with a Cannex Gold award, an AluFoil Trophy and a Starpack ‘highly commended Engineering innovation’, this really is the icing on the cake,” said Woep Möller, Trivium’s CEO food & speciality Europe.

He added: “Our ambitious packaging inno-vation for this leading Norwegian brand, which projects 60 separate designs on the Hansa shaped seafood can representing dif-ferent places or people’s way of life, captured the imagination of people in Norway as well as the attention of the packaging world. This ultralight, infinitely recyclable aluminium can

from Emilia Romagna. It is a transparent film, certified suitable for contact with food, that sticks like an invisible skin to all the projections-recesses of the container without using glue.

By sealing the whole lid and without leaving air bubbles, Skin4Can guar-antees total protection from dirt and micro-organisms and redefines hygiene protection standards.

The patented solution makes it possible to apply the film immediately after the

filling/pasteurisation phase without heating the container, creating a vacuum that resists refrigeration, immersion and perforation. Protection is continuous, from the production site to the consumer, so Skin4Can can also act as a seal of guarantee. Economic con-venience, stackability and compatibility with vending machines, both hot and cold, are additional advantages.

Danone UK launches L’mon sparkling drinksThe makers of Volvic, Danone, has partnered with Ball Corporation, to produce L’mon, a new range of sparkling drinks, combining at least 25% real fruit juice and British spring water.

Each can of L’mon packs in all the taste of a traditional fizzy drink, using naturally sourced ingredients, with no added sugar (except those naturally occurring in fruit juice) and no artificial colours, flavours or preservatives.

The drink is available in three citrus combinations – Lemon & Orange, Lemon & Lime and Lemon & Grapefruit.

Launched in 330ml standard cans, the brand embraced the 360 degree design can-vas of the can with a modern, vibrant design, while extending the citrus cues right through to the yellow coloured tab.

With the UK recycling rate for aluminium cans reaching 75%, L’mon is further sup-porting this with the inclusion of the Metals Recycles Forever logo, as well as a friendly consumer call to action; ‘Please recycle, it’s refreshingly good’.

Jacqueline Lane, senior brand manager for Volvic UK & Ireland, said: “At Danone, we don’t think you should have to choose between the pleasure of a tasty fizzy drink and being health conscious, that’s why we created L’mon – to give consumers a deli-cious, sparkling refreshment they can really enjoy. By partnering with Ball, we not only

launched a delicious new range, but Ball’s expertise gave us a deeper insight into the right packaging solution. We are delighted that L’mon is packaged in a fully recyclable aluminium can that can be recycled forever.”

Jag Bains, UK sales director at Ball, said: “We really value and enjoy working with com-panies that embrace sustainability and aim to make a difference to the environment just like Danone. We are proud to say that our strong collaboration marks an exciting milestone for

offers the perfect branding surface for this striking design.”

The WorldStar Packaging Awards Competition is the pre-eminent international award in packaging.

Trivium Packaging was formed in 2019 following the merger of Ardagh Group’s global Food and Speciality business and Exal Corporation.

In addition to beverage cans, this solution is also suitable for tinplate containers in the food industries.

With a minimum use of material (0.3-0.6 g/tin can) and 100% recyclable, Skin4Can is an eco-friendly solution whose multipack version can replace secondary packaging. Detachment of the film can be prevented to stop its disposal in the environment. Its clear, crystalline appearance together with its consistency and conformity do not alter the visual aspect of the product it is applied to, giving consumers a perception of protection, hygiene and reliability. This makes Skin4Can an optimal solution, even from a marketing point of view.

“Skin4Can is another example of our com-mitment to innovation in the development of solutions that tangibly increase the competi-tiveness of our clients,” said sales manager of EMS Group, Paolo Biondi.

Crown wins at both Best in Metal and UK Packaging AwardsCrown Aerosols and Promotional Packaging was awarded this year’s MPMA Best in Metal Award for its speciality champagne pack for Nicolas Feuillatte Champagne, in the same week that the pack was crowned Metal Pack of the Year at the UK Packaging awards.

The Best in Metal Award was select-ed by MPMA from shortlisted finalists in the MPMA sponsored metal’s category of the UK Packaging Awards, and this year the Nicolas Feuillatte Champagne took both crowns on consecutive nights: the Best in Metal Award announced at the association’s annual dinner following the win at the UK Packaging Awards the previous night.

The Nicolas Feuillatte Champagne pack features Crown’s ‘square to round’ tin and incorporates an innovative lid feature which

RingCycles are made using +50% post-consumer recycled resin, the production of which uses 90% less non-renewable energy, 83% less water consumption, emits 75% less green-house gases, and creates 43% less solid waste when compared to virgin material production.

Hi-Cone’s global sustainability goals include increasing investments in resource and material research, significantly minimising the amount of virgin plastic used, increasing recycling and education efforts to support a circular economy for plastic and reusing ring carriers collected to ensure zero plastic waste.

Ardagh adds white finish to shell rangeArdagh has introduced the latest newcomer to its range of infinitely recyclable coloured beverage ends: a white shell.

The white coloured shell was originally a specific Ardagh customisation for Bavarian craft beer company And Union. It is now available to all customers who are seeking a bright and contemporary finish for their cans.

Ardagh’s catalogue of beverage end options boasts a wide selection of attractive colours and finishes for both the shell and the tab. With the addition of stylish white as a shell finish, the choice expands once again, resulting in exciting new possibilities for bev-erage ends which are guaranteed to stand out at point of sale. Customers will be able to match any tab from Ardagh’s existing colour range with the white shell in combinations that achieve either a sleek and sophisticated complement, or an eye-catching contrast.

The white shell has already proven itself a head-turner as it formed an important ele-ment of the design for And Union’s unfiltered lager can, which won a silver medal at 2017’s Cans of the Year awards. The company was seeking a modern, minimalist look to reflect their values, and Ardagh developed the white shell in response, pairing it with a black tab.

Henning Madea, chief executive officer at And Union said: “We’re proud to have been the first to use Ardagh’s new white shells. When we were conceptualising our packaging design back in 2016, we were looking to evoke a clean, uncomplicated and ultra-mod-ern message, and Ardagh delivered with the

white Coloured Shell/ black Coloured Tab combination. In fact, we loved it so much we now use it across our entire range of cans.”

“The white shell was a real success for the And Union cans, and now we’re delighted to be making it part of our Coloured Shell range,” said Dirk Schwung, sales director at Ardagh Group’s European Metal Beverage division. “We’re always looking to innovate to meet customer needs, not only technically but with aesthetics and branding too.”

Robert Fell, MPMA director and chief exec-utive, said: “This is a visually stunning pack with great shelf appeal, and while the distinc-tive ‘square to round’ design turned heads and won awards two years ago, the new lid feature has added a further innovative dimension providing a useful feature which improves stability and reduces the need for other materials to be used.”

“Hi-Cone is reimagining packaging for the beverage industry for a more sustainable future and RingCycles is providing a bet-ter packaging solution now,” said Shawn Welch, general manager and vice president of Hi-Cone Worldwide. “This launch represents a significant milestone in our sustainability journey, technology innovation and material development.”

“RingCycles is an exciting step for us as we develop more effective ways to reduce and recycle plastic packaging within the beverage industry, as well as innovative ways to keep it in use and out of the environment.

“We are making significant investments in resources and material research to con-tinue to develop the most sustainable and commercially viable solutions available on the market,” said Welch.

A sideways look at the world of can making

It appears canned wine has gone mainstream. Whether you know clar-et from your Beaujolais is immaterial,

there are a wealth of options now at your disposal for ready to drink wine. And most importantly, many of these new products are in canned format and at an attractive price point. Pass the Chardonnay please I’m gasping…

With this in mind, the fact that Greencroft Bottling Company has part-nered with Ardagh Group to launch the UK’s first large-scale wine canning line, shows the real intent for can maker’s to capitalise on this uptrend.

Quoting Mark Satchwell, managing director of Greencroft Bottling, provides some context to the new canning line:

“We constantly invest in our equipment to guarantee we’re offering the best ser-vice possible to our customers and ensure we have the correct technology in place to meet future market demands.

“The can is a format consumers are already familiar with, through soft drinks, beers and ciders, and right now canned wine consumption is growing at a rate of approximately six per cent year on year in Western Europe, so we were pleased to collaborate with Ardagh to set up a dedi-cated wine canning line and be the first to provide for this growing market.”

What is interesting are the can sizes; 200ml and 250ml slimline cans, but also with scope to handle Ardagh’s new 187ml wine can format. Is it just me, or is 187ml a sip for gluttons like yours truly?

There’s no reason why the wine market can’t enjoy a fruitful period, much like the fledging ready to drink spirits market has recently. They’re sustainable, and have all the benefits of complementing the demands of modern society, where ease of consumption is oh so impor-tant. With the wealth of new products

available, please don’t be shy insending us in some samples; I’m sure there are a ready-made team of experts at Bell Publishing HQ ready to give their opinion. Actually scrap that; please send to [email protected]. I’ll of course forward onto the respective departments...

On a personal level, I’m in two minds on the trend itself. From my perspective, wine is a sensual experience. There’s noth-ing better than relaxing over a glass of something with a meal, or sharing a bottle with a friend. If I’m seeking some-thing on-the-go, or at an event, I shift towards a beer or a gin and tonic (in a can of course). So does the wine market have a narrow demographic? Is it largely directed towards the female market and younger consumers?

The figures say otherwise, and maybe in a couple of years I’ll be buying my sauvignon blanc in six-pack format; let’s hope for the health of our industry, that’s the trend we’ll be seeing.

However, the quality I hear is great. I best pop to my local shop and buy some; all in the name of market research of course. I’ll report back!

On the subject of canned wine, I’m pleased to report that Barokes Wines has been formally recognised as the pioneer of the Vinsafe canned wine technology, following a five-year court battle with its Japanese shareholder Daiwa Can Company.

The Australian company’s business and assets, including its globally patented Vinsafe (wine in a can) technology, trade-marks, intellectual property etc, were purchased by Barokes’ executive man-agement team via Intelligent Packaging Pty Ltd (trading as Barokes Wines), an Australian company primarily owned by

THE CAN MANTHE CAN MAN

Greg and Irene Stokes and Steve Barics. As one of the pioneers of wine in a can, I’m sure they can’t believe the growth we’ve seen in the product they were attempting to push to market well over a decade ago.
