MATADORS OPEN UP 64TH SEA-SON AT USC, NOTRE DAME

CSUN VISITS USC AND NOTRE DAME IN WEEK ONE OF NEW SEASONCSUN Men’s Basketball officially opens its 64th season this week on the road. The Matadors kick off the regular season against USC on Tuesday night at 6 p.m. on the Pac-12 Network before hitting the road once more on Saturday afternoon to face Notre Dame at noon on the ACC Network Extra. Ghizal Hasan and Alan Zinsmeister will be on the call in audio broadcasts at GoMatadors.com/Radio.

Under interim head coach Trent Johnson, the Matadors return eight returners with only one letterwinner, Darius Brown II, starting more than 10 games last season. CSUN though have added eight newcomers to the program including five Division I transfers. While fielding a relatively new team, Johnson has assembled a roster that has nine players with four or more years of experience in college. Six student-athletes also have competed in 50 or more games at the Division I level while three are graduate students.

Senior point guard Darius Brown II returns for his fourth season at CSUN and with the most experience on the team with 88 games played. The Pasadena native earned All-Big West Second Team honors last season and was placed on the Preseason All-Big West Media Team this season. Brown set new personal bests in points (10.5 PPG), assists (5.3 APG), rebounds (4.8 RPG) and steals (1.9 SPG) last season while shooting 47.2 percent from the field and 36.8 percent from 3-point range.

Brendan Harrick was one of four players last season to play in all 22 games as he averaged 4.0 points and connected on 20 3-point shots. Entering his second season, Atin Wright played in 21 games as a true freshman in 2020-21 where he registered 4.7 points per game. Another sophomore, Fidelis Okereke, started seven of 21 games a season ago, averaging 3.8 points and 3.7 rebounds to go with a team-high 16 blocks. Graduate students Miles Brookins (4.4 PPG in eight games) and Lance Coleman II (13.9 PPG and 3.8 RPG in eight games) missed most of the Big West Conference season last year.

CSUN has added experience with five Division I transfers joining the ranks this season. A 6-3 guard from Carbondale, Ill, Darius Beane has played in 78 career games with Southern Illinois and Northern Illinois. This past season, Beane averaged 9.7 points and 4.5 rebounds for NIU. Onyi Eyisi brings size with his 6-9 frame as the Nigerian native played in 67 games at Fordham, averaging 4.4 points and 4.1 rebounds. Hailing from Oakland, Elijah Hardy has lettered at Washington and most recently Portland State where he averaged 7.1 points in 2020-21. A 6-6 graduate student, Christian Gray spent three seasons at Fresno State and would register 5.3 points and 3.0 rebounds a year ago. Rounding out the transfers, 6-6 forward Miles James played in 32 total games in two years with East Carolina.

Johnson enters his first season at CSUN and his 18th overall as a Division I head coach. Over his extensive career, Johnson has led three programs to the NCAA Tournament while he guided Nevada and Stanford to the Sweet 16 rounds. Johnson has also been named Coach of the Year in the WAC (2002-03), Pac-10 (2007-08) and SEC (2008-09).

The Matadors lost eight letterwinners in the offseason including Big West Newcomer of the Year and All-Big West First Team selection TJ Starks. Last season, Starks led the Big West in scoring at 21.7 points per game, which ranked sixth-best in the nation. He also topped the league in field goals made (156) and free throws made (84). Alex Merkviladze, Amound Anderson and Festus Ndumanya are also among the letterwinners that departed in the offseason.

CSUN makes its eighth trip to USC this week and its first since 2015. The Trojans are 7-1 all-time against CSUN and have won the last three in the series. In the teams’ last game in 2015, the Trojans prevailed 96-61. The Matadors picked up their only win over USC on Nov. 20, 2005 in overtime, 81-75. Mike Efevberha scored 20 points in the Matadors’ OT victory. CSUN has not defeated a Pac-12 Conference team since beating Utah in Dec. 2012.

Notre Dame and CSUN will face off for just the second time in men’s basketball. The Fighting Irish won the only meeting on Jan. 31, 1994 by a 76-58 decision in South Bend. The Matadors have played three games against ACC opponents in their history, going 0-3 in those contests. CSUN also faced Virginia Tech in 2010 and Louisville in 2014.

RETURNING LETTERWINNERS• Junior guard Brendan Harrick is one of two returners to play in all 22 games last season. Harrick averaged

4.0 points in 16.4 minutes per game. He knocked down the fourth-most 3-pointers in 2020-21 with 20. Harrick’s best game of his career came at Cal State Fullerton (1/26/21) where he scored a personal-high 25 points and made seven 3-pointers. Over his career, he has recorded 221 points in 53 games.

• Graduate forward Miles Brookins averaged 4.4 points and 2.1 rebounds in 15.9 minutes per game last sea-son. Brookins has been limited to nine games played over the last two seasons due to injury. Prior to CSUN, Brookins played 57 games with La Salle from 2017-19 where he averaged 4.4 points and 2.3 rebounds.

• Graduate forward Lance Coleman II was posting career-high averages of 13.9 points and 3.8 rebounds last season before going down with a season-ending injury in January. Coleman has made 59 3-pointers while shooting 33.9 percent from long range in two seasons with CSUN.

• Sophomore guard Atin Wright registered 4.7 points in 13.8 minutes per game as a true freshman last season. Wright reached double figures four times in 2020-21, highlighted by a 22-point performance at Cal State Fullerton (1/17/21).

• Sophomore forward Fidelis Okereke posted 3.8 points and 3.7 rebounds per game as a true freshman in 2020-21. Okereke led the team in blocked shots (16) while he shot 46.9 percent from the floor. He ranked third on the team in steals (16) and fourth in rebounds (77).

D-1 TRANSFERS BOLSTER ROSTER WITH EXPERIENCE• Fourth-year guard Darius Beane spent one season at Southern Illinois before playing the last two seasons

at Northern Illinois. The Carbondale, Ill. native averaged 9.7 points and 4.5 rebounds last season. He has played in 78 career games, totaling 473 points, 263 rebounds and 107 assists.

• Another fourth-year guard, Elijah Hardy lettered two seasons at Washington then played last season at

Portland State in 2020-21. A Oakland native, Hardy posted averaged of 7.1 points and 2.9 points for PSU. Hardy has played in 60 total D-1 games, amassing 196 points and 91 rebounds.

• A 6-9 fourth-year forward, Onyi Eyisi appeared in 67 games with Fordham over the past three seasons. Originally from Lagos, Nigeria, Eyisi posted career-best averages of 6.6 points and 5.6 rebounds in 2019-20. He has tallied 297 points, 277 rebounds and 52 blocks over his career.

• Up front, graduate forward Christian Gray has spent the past five years in college including the last three at Fresno State. A Riverside native, Gray averaged 5.3 points and 3.0 rebounds last season for the Bulldogs. He recorded 141 points and 129 rebounds while lettering two seasons at Fresno State.

• Originally from Inglewood, Miles James has spent three years in college including the last two at East Carolina. James played limited minutes at ECU where he finished with 38 points and 28 rebounds in 32 games.

KEY DEPARTURES• TJ Starks led the Big West in scoring at 21.7 points per game, which ranked sixth in the nation. Starks

became the second CSUN player to win the Big West Newcomer of the Year award while he took home All-Big West Second Team honors. Starks turned professional and signed with a Lithuanian team before receiving an invitation to the training camp of the Milwaukee Bucks’ G-League team, the Wisconsin Herd.

• Alex Merkviladze ranked fifth in the Big West in rebounding (7.0 RPG) while he averaged 10.0 points. He also shot 38.2 percent from 3-point range as a freshman. Merkviladze transferred to Loyola Marymount.

• Amound Anderson averaged 5.4 points and 2.4 rebounds in 17 games as a freshman. Anderson also knocked down 40.6 percent of his shots from 3-point range. He transferred to Southern Utah.

• Festus Ndumanya averaged 4.8 points and 3.7 rebounds while shooting 47.6 percent from the field. Ndumanya averaged 4.0 points and 3.0 rebounds in 51 games at CSUN. He transferred to Salt Lake CC.

A CLOSER LOOK AT USCThe Trojans went 25-8 last season and enjoyed a memorable NCAA Tournament run that culminated in the Elite Eight Round in 2021. The team was picked to finish third in the Preseason Pac-12 poll by members of the media. The Trojans received votes in both the AP and Ferris Mowers Coaches Preseason top-25 polls in October. Head coach Andy Enfield is in his eighth season leading USC.

A total of 11 players have returned from last season’s Elite Eight team. Isaiah Mobley was named to the Preseason Pac-12 First Team after averaging 9.9 points and 7.3 rebounds per game. Mobley was also named to the watch list for the Lute Olson Player of the Year and Karl Malone Award. Earning Preseason Pac-12 Second Team recognition, Boogie Ellis transferred from Memphis where he averaged 10.2 points per game last season. Senior guard Drew Peterson also has returned after averaging 9.8 points and 5.0 rebounds per game in 2020-21.

A CLOSER LOOK AT NOTRE DAMEThe Fighting Irish finished 2020-21 with an 11-15 overall record and 7-11 mark in the ACC. The team was picked to come in ninth place in the ACC this season. Notre Dame has returned much of its same lineup from last season with eight returners including four starters. Mike Brey is entering his 22nd season leading the program.

Senior guard Prentiss Hubb is the team’s top returning scorer at 14.6 points per game from a year ago to go with averaging 5.8 assists. Hubb was picked All-ACC Third Team last season. Two other returners scored in double figures last season, which include Nate Laszewski (13.3 PPG) and Dane Goodwin (11.8 PPG). Laszewski posted 7.3 rebounds per game while Goodwin grabbed 5.2 per game. Yale graduate transfer Paul Atkinson Jr. previously was the 2020 Ivy League Player of the Year..

Trent Johnson was named CSUN’s Interim Head Men’s Basketball Coach on July 20, 2021. Johnson will lead the Matadors on an interim basis during the 2021-22 season. Johnson owns a 276-265

career record with winning tenures at three of his previous coaching stops. He has been named coach of the year in all three conferences in which he has coached: the Western Athletic Conference (2002-03), Pac-10 (2007-08) and Southeastern Conference (2008-09). Johnson has led three programs to the NCAA Tournament including two to the NCAA Sweet 16. His teams have made five total NCAA Tournament and three NIT appearances over his career. Throughout his career, Johnson has a long history of support-ing student welfare and achievement. He will bring that focus to the student-athletes at CSUN to ensure their continued success both on and off the court this season. Johnson is no stranger to the West Coast, having led the Stanford basketball program from 2004-2008, compiling a record of 80-48. He led the Cardinal to three NCAA Tournament appearances (2004-05, 2006-07, 2007-08) and one NIT appear-ance (2005-06). Johnson was named Pac-10 Coach of the Year following the 2007-08 season that saw the Cardinal finish 28-8 while advancing to the Sweet 16. In his four seasons on the Farm, where he previously worked as an assistant coach from 1996-99, he became the only head coach in program history to guide the Cardinal to the postseason in each of his first four sea-sons. He also led Nevada to similar heights in his first head coach-ing assignment. Johnson revitalized the Wolfpack program during his five-year tenure from 1999-2004. During the 2003-04 season, he led Nevada to the NCAA Sweet 16 for the first time in school history as the Wolf Pack tied a school record with 25 wins. Nevada tied for a share of the WAC regular-season crown for the first time in school history and captured the WAC Tournament Championship. Johnson spent four seasons as head coach at both LSU and then TCU. In his first season in Baton Rouge in 2008-09, he guided LSU to a 27-8 overall record and the SEC regular-season championship. His Tiger squad produced the third-most victo-ries in a season in program history. Johnson remained at LSU through 2011-12, when the Tigers posted an 18-15 overall record and an NIT first-round appearance, before he departed for TCU. Johnson returned to the Bay Area in 2019 where he spent two seasons as Deputy Analyst & Director of Player Development at California (2019-21). He has also served as a collegiate assistant coach at Utah (1986-89), Washington (1989-92), Rice (1992-96), Stanford (1996-99) and Louisville (2017-18). Johnson formerly served on the National Association of Basketball Coaches Board of Directors and was inducted into the Nevada Hall of Fame in 2013. He graduated from Franklin High School in Seattle and played collegiate basketball at Boise State (1974-78), where he ranked

among the school’s career leaders with 1,115 points and 702 rebounds. As a sophomore, Johnson helped lead the Broncos to the Big Sky Tournament championship title and an NCAA Tournament berth. He would earn All-Big Sky honors as a senior. Following his collegiate career, Johnson played professionally for the Washington Lumberjacks of the Western Basketball League. He returned to Boise State after his playing days to complete his degree in physical education in 1986.

Johnson’s File-Enters 34th season as a coach at the Division I level and 18th as a head coach-Named Coach of the Year in three different leagues, which includes the Western Athletic Conference in 2003, Pac-10 Conference in 2008 and Southeastern Conference in 2009. -Led three programs to the NCAA Tournament as a head coach and reached the postseason eight times-Earned five total trips to the NCAA Tournament as a head coach, highlighted by Sweet 16 runs with Nevada (2004) and Stanford (2008). -Led Nevada to the WAC regular-season and tournament titles in 2004 and LSU to the SEC regular-season championship in 2009.
