Our section, TREDTWO (C31) had organized and fulfilled the Community Service
Program (CSP) with the Institution, Buklod Tao, Inc. The goal was to establish Gabion
Boxes as Disaster Risk Reduction and production of Coco-fit (slippers) for livelihood
and for health. Our institutional partner, Buklod Tao, Inc. is a non-series organization
responsible for the people living in our assigned area. Our class was based in Brgy.
Banaba, San Mateo, Rizal to serve for the safety and help produce health beneficial
products.Sir KaNoli was our facilitator during our service. He made sure that we knew
what to do and that we served the correct number of hours. We were segregated into 4
groups, 2 for the Gabion and 2 for the Coco-fit. In duration of five (5) hours, we were
ableto fulfil our tasks on time. For the cost for the Gabion Boxes, the finance committee
with the money bought gloves and paint brushes for us to use for the Gabion Boxes.
With five hours of our Community Service Program (CSP) in the community, Brgy.
Banaba, San Mateo, Rizal, I myself can say that I have accomplished many things. At
first, I expected it to be hard because of so many things we have to do and take note of.
Come our first hour in the community, we waited for a while; because the other jeep
somehow got lost along the way. When they arrived, Sir KaNoli refreshed our
memories of what to do in the community. In the project, I chose to be with the Gabion
Boxes. At first, we were assigned to put huge amount of rocks into the Gabion Boxes
through the very sunny day. It was quite fun doing this but as many rocks we carried, I
got extremely exhausted. I also saw how the community lacks protection against
severe floods with the past Typhoon “Ondoy” last September 26, 2009. Because of
what we saw, we tried our best to put as many rocks as possible. In that case, the
people there don’t want to happen as of what they have experienced before. Each of us
gave their full efforts and participation to lead the project towards success. The people
there were also participative in the project. They were so accommodating and friendly to
the students. I can say that after the service in thecommunity, we did a great job.
Despite the success, we cannot deny the weaknesses of the said project. Most of the
time, we get very tired of lifting the rocks in such a very hot day. Despite of these, we
can say that the strengths still outweigh the weaknesses of the project.
After we had lunch, it started to rain. We have to paint the new Gabion Boxes for the
next batch. We tried very hard not to get any paint in our clothes and shoes. Then after
that, we had a gathering where Sir KaNoli collects our insights of what we done and the
relation of this service to our course. We believe that the community benefited from our
project; because with the Gabion Boxes, floods can be lower as usual. With the Coco-
fit, not only it will give comfort for the consumer, but also to heal their foot problems. In
our last few minutes, there were joys but at the same time sadness in our hearts. Joys
because we know that we did a great job, that we will leave the community not in the
same condition as when we first came, and sadness because we have to leave the
people, who were so accommodating and overwhelming and the great achievements
that we have done.In the end, it was all worth it because we, TREDTWO section C31,
have helped a community and brought smiles to everyone’s faces.
