Note from Chair  To: Material Advantage From: Hannah Govett, Chair of the Colorado School of Mines Material Advantage Chapter Date: June 1, 2016  

The executive board of 2015­2016 worked extremely hard to maintain and expand CSMMAC’s role in the Metallurgical and Materials Engineering department and CSMMAC’s presence on the Mines campus. The CSMMAC calendar was constantly booked with professional speakers, panels, seminars, volunteer opportunities, and social events. CSMMAC provided a wide range of diverse and beneficial programming such that there was something for each unique student member.  

I watched the executive board grow from a green, inexperienced group of ambitious students to a team of organized, polished, and professional young leaders who would take initiative, share in responsibility, and hold themselves and each other accountable. My experience as Chair of Material Advantage has been challenging but rewarding, and I am proud of the way this executive board has overcome the obstacles we faced along the way.

Programming CSMMAC focused programming on the wide variety of options for members after graduation. Panels and speakers from industry and academia served to educate MA members on career and higher education opportunities.   Student and Departmental Speakers Internship Panel: A group of 7 undergraduate students attended our general meeting to discuss their internship experiences in various industries before Career Fair to give our members some insight into different opportunities they may pursue. We had students representing experience in steel, renewable energy, extractive metallurgy, non­ferrous metallurgy, and manufacturing. The internship panel provides a valuable opportunity for CSMMAC members to openly discuss their experiences with students who are looking for a summer internship or co­op.   Graduate Student Panel: Jake Ivy, Taylor Wilkinson, Tom Boundy, Devon Gonzales, and Stephen DeFrance talked about their experiences in graduate school, the application and admittance process, and their research. This event gives great perspective for students considering graduate school or anyone who is curious about what graduate students do.  Dr. Ryan O’Hayre & Fuel Cell Research: Professor O’Hayre held a laidback question and answer session where he gave a brief introduction to fuel cells and his career and passed around some examples. This was a great opportunity for students to learn more about a career in research and to learn about Dr. O’Hayre’s research.  

 

 Dr. Michael Sanders: Professor Michael Sanders held an informal discussion of his thesis topic and research work at the Colorado School of Mines. Through his presentation, Dr. Sanders introduced students to advanced diffusion research and its applications in solar cells.   Industry and Invited Speakers Professional Speaker from Chevron: Nika Moyer, a metallurgist at Chevron and CSM alumna, gave a presentation on the role of a metallurgical and materials engineer in the oil and gas industry. She provided information on the career opportunities available with Chevron and showed a portion of the presentation prepared by the metallurgical intern that worked for her the previous summer. Occurring before career fair, this presentation was an excellent opportunity to network.

Professional Speaker from Blount International: Kaitlyn McNaughton, manager of the Metallurgical Laboratory at the headquarters of Blount International in Portland, OR, and CSM alumna, gave a presentation to CSMMAC about the role of a metallurgical laboratory for a global manufacturing company. She gave an introduction to the design and metallurgy of saw chain. Blount International recruits metallurgical engineers and interns from CSM exclusively, and they are a member of the ASPPRC, making this a unique networking opportunity for CSMMAC members.   Professional Speaker from Los Alamos National Laboratory: Amy Clarke from Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) attended the CSMMAC meeting and presented on the opportunities available to metallurgical and materials engineering undergraduate, graduate, Ph. D. candidates, and postdoc students. As a CSM grad, she was able to give insight into the advantages of a degree from Mines. As LANL is looking for interns, co­op students, and full­time hires, this presentation provided lots of information the national laboratory career path.  Professional Speaker from EVRAZ Pueblo: Bryce Lakamp from EVRAZ Pueblo spoke at one of our weekly CSMMAC meetings.  As a Colorado School of Mines alumnus, Mr. Lakamp was able to share how his CSM education supports his career as a Process Control Engineer in the steel manufacturing industry.  He spoke about many of the rod and bar products EVRAZ Pueblo manufactures as well as the processes through which they are formed.  As steel has a large presence in the Metallurgical and Materials Engineering department at Mines, there was much interest from students in the products and processes discussed and in how his CSM background aided in his success in a steel mill.  Professional Speaker from Spyderco: Peter Jhones of Spyderco, a local knife manufacturer, visited with CSMMAC during our weekly meeting. He talked to members about the importance of patents, copyrights, and trademarks for an innovative manufacturing company. His visit was very interactive and students responded well with sincere interest and many questions.  Professional Speakers from CoorsTek: A group of materials scientists from CoorsTek visited CSMMAC to talk about the research and products of CoorsTek, the world’s largest manufacturer of engineered technical ceramics, located in Golden just down the street from the Mines campus. The three engineers discussed how they came to work at CoorsTek, what they had learned from working in a group together, and opened up for any questions from CSMMAC members. It was a wonderful opportunity to take advantage of a local business such as CoorsTek.

Professional Speaker from United Launch Alliance: Andrea Cassius, a Colorado School of Mines alumna, from United Launch Alliance attended a weekly CSMMAC meeting. United Launch Alliance provides space launch services to customers such as the Department of Defense and NASA. Ms. Cassius presented her work specifically with additive manufacturing of polymer parts and their impact on a recent launch project. She also discussed with CSMMAC members the United Launch Alliance method of hiring interns and new graduates to help prepare interested students for next year.  Professional Speakers from Nucor: A group of engineers that included several Colorado School of Mines alumni from Nucor Steel visited with CSMMAC members to present on Nucor’s unique method of producing steel. Nucor is the largest producer of steel in the United States and is comprised of many mini­mills scattered throughout the country. Their visit occurred before career fair and featured several students who had previously completed internships at Nucor. This gave CSMMAC members the opportunity to learn about various Nucor work experiences from both their current and their former peers.

Career Development Outside of chapter meetings, CSMMAC encouraged its members to explore the material science community through industrial tours and conferences.  

 Industrial Tours Nucor Tour in Ohio: During MS&T 2015 in Columbus, Ohio, several representatives from Nucor invited CSMMAC members Michelle Hoffmann, Kyle Grove, and Rachael Stewart to tour the Nucor facilities in Marion. The tour included the melt shop and the bar making mill. Everyone enjoyed the opportunity to see a new facility somewhere far from Colorado.  Western Foundries Tour in Longmont, CO: CSMMAC members attended a tour of the Western Foundries plant including the patternmaking shop, foundry, heat treatment, and cryogenic treatment facilities. The tour showed the manufacturing process from start to finish and students had many opportunities to ask questions about the oldest foundry west of the Mississippi. 

  Technical Meetings MS&T 2015 in Columbus, OH: CSMMAC sponsored six undergraduate and one graduate student to attend MS&T. Chapter officers attended the Chapter Leadership Workshop and enjoyed the opportunity to share Material Advantage ideas and experiences with officers from other universities. Students enjoyed the opportunity to watch the Mug Drop and Ceramic Disc Golf competitions, watch technical presentations, tour a Nucor facility, and attend the Student Networking Mixer and AIST Steel to Students Reception. Several students accepted scholarships at the awards ceremony, and we were proud to accept our plaque recognizing CSMMAC as the Most Outstanding Chapter for 2014­2015! 

 

              MS&T 2015                                                                  TMS 2016  TMS 2016 in Nashville, TN: Eight students were funded by CSMMAC to attend TMS in Nashville. Four of the attending students were members of the Materials Bowl Team, and their travel was sponsored by a generous donation from Phillips 66.  CSMMAC members enjoyed cheering on the Materials Bowl team, presenting at the Bladesmithing Symposium, attending technical talks, and the many networking receptions. TMS was an excellent opportunity for students to learn about progressive research in materials science, to network with peers and professionals, and to explore a new place.

Congressional Visit Days in Washington, D.C.: CSMMAC was fortunate enough to have four students attend CVD this year. MME juniors Jordan Carson, Ryan Mathiesen, Makenzie Parimuha, and senior Emily Mitchell had a great experience at this event. Jordan Carson wanted to share his experience personally: “My time in DC with Materials Advantage was a wonderful experience and opportunity. Meeting with both other Materials Engineering students, as well as interested members of the public to advocate for STEM education and research funding was a valuable experience, and really fun. We were able to see a lot of the memorials around DC, and do something awesome for the MME field as a whole!”  

 

 Student Competitions Materials Bowl 2016: Two graduate and two undergraduate students made up the 2016 Materials Bowl team. Blake Whitley served again as team captain accompanied by returning member Connor Campbell and rookies Charis Dallman and Hannah Govett. The team members studied together for several months leading up to the competition, and despite a disappointing loss, had a great time cheering on the other teams to the final round. 

  Bladesmithing Symposium: Michelle Hoffmann presented on behalf of her team on their topic “Pattern Welded Steel Using Commercially Available Steel”. She discussed the damascus making process they had been exploring and the different types of damascus they had tried making. For 2017, the team plans to forge more damascus and assemble their blade once they have chosen a style.   AIST Real Steel Video Competition: CSMMAC treasurer Josh Pelz submitted an entry to the AIST video competition. He created a video that focused on exemplifying the steel industry's change from archaic and unsustainable to very modern, high­tech, and exceptionally sustainable. He tied for 6th place and received a $500 cash prize!

ASM Involvement  ASM Rocky Mountain Chapter Technical Meeting Attendance: The Rocky Mountain Chapter of ASM hosts technical meetings on the first Thursday of every month at Rolling Hills Country Club in Golden. They encourage student attendance by reducing the cost of student meals to $10. Graduate and undergraduate members of CSMMAC regularly attend these technical meetings to network with local professionals in industry and academia.   Service on the ASM Rocky Mountain Chapter Executive Committee: Two members of CSMMAC’s executive board served on the ASM Rocky Mountain Chapter Executive Committee. The Chair of CSMMAC maintains a standing role on the executive committee, and Michelle Hoffmann held the position of Communications Chair, which includes putting together and sending out the monthly newsletter and participating in the Executive Council meetings each month. CSMMAC’s service in ASM keeps our club connected and involved with professionals in the organization, bridging the gap from college to post grad.   ASM Rocky Mountain Chapter Barrett Award Night: Each spring, the Rocky Mountain Chapter of ASM hosts the Barrett Award Night as its most significant technical meeting. This year, the award was presented to Dr. Robert H. Wagoner, Professor Emeritus at The Ohio State University in recognition of his contributions to multiple areas of research surrounding metal forming. In addition to the award given to an outstanding researcher, several students were recognized by the ASM chapter for their accomplishments and involvement in campus and ASM activities.

Service Outreach activities were held to serve the Mines campus and greater Colorado community, from participating in school traditions to educating elementary to high school students about the wonders of materials science. More than 30 CSMMAC members volunteered at various events serving more than 300 elementary, middle, high school, and college students over the year.   Campus Activities Freshman M­Climb: At the beginning of each school year, new freshman hike up Mount Zion carrying a ten pound rock they brought from their hometown to add to the “M” made of whitewashed rocks. Along their path, they are met by upperclassmen with refreshments and water guns who lead them in singing the Mines fight song. CSMMAC collaborated with the club lacrosse teams to support the freshmen in this longtime tradition.  

 

Celebration of Mines: At Celebration of Mines, campus organizations set up a table to recruit new members and inform students about their activities. CSMMAC puts on demonstrations such as Prince Rupert’s drop, bobby pin heat treatment, and more. This event is an excellent opportunity to invite students to join the major as well as Material Advantage.  Campus Wide Fall BBQ: CSMMAC hosted our annual Fall BBQ for the campus. More than 200 students attended! Social Chairs Brandon Ott and Abby Miklas worked hard to prepare and cook hamburgers and hot dogs for CSMMAC and potential new members. While waiting for food, CSMMAC members played some lawn games and enjoyed some fun after a long week of classes, exams, and lab reports. Our event was featured in a newsletter for the College of Applied Science and Engineering.  Aspen Hall Demos & Tour: CSMMAC Faculty Advisor Dr. Bourne also serves as “Faculty Friend” to campus dorm Aspen Hall, a freshman residence. Dr. Bourne asked CSMMAC to put on some materials science demos and give a tour to the residents of Aspen Hall. CSMMAC members set up different stations and rotated small groups to show them Prince Rupert’s drop, the properties of zinc diffusion in pennies, the effect of temperature on slip systems, and a tour of the MME labs. More than 20 freshmen students participated, none of them were declared as MME majors, and several showed further interest in MME after the event.

Bring Your Kid to Work Day: Colorado School of Mines held a “Bring Your Kid to Work Day” for faculty and staff. Around 60 children of Mines employees aged 6­12 enjoyed a day of science, sports, and fun. CSMMAC members put on kid­friendly demonstrations, such as demonstrating fatigue properties with a paperclip for each child and showing the effects of heat treatment on a bobby pin.  

 

 Community Outreach Discover Mines: This event is held on several weekends throughout the school year to host prospective students and inform them about opportunities at Mines. CSMMAC was invited to serve as tour guides for the MME department and to share their experiences with potential incoming freshmen.   Ralston Elementary School Science Fair Judging: CSMMAC members were invited to participate as science fair judges for local Ralston Elementary School. Students in grades kindergarten through 5th worked hard on projects ranging from “Weight Effects of a Football” to “Exploring Electrolysis”.

K­12 Outreach Westminster High School Visit & Tour: Around fifty Juniors and Seniors interested in STEM from Westminster High School came to learn about engineering, Mines, and the MME program. With the assistance of some graduate students, they were given a tour of the mechanical testing, ceramics, and welding labs, as well as a tour of the foundry and a closer look at the SEM and TEM.   Bell Middle School Visit & Tour: Sixty students from Bell Middle School visited Mines for an introduction to materials science and engineering. Several graduate students guided them in a tour of the department building and demonstrated piezoelectric properties in grill lighters, floating magnets over ceramics, and the ever­popular Prince Rupert’s drop.   Gear Up Visit & Tour: The Gear Up program serves to expose students in low income school districts in Denver the career possibilities in science and engineering. CSMMAC was contacted by the Gear Up coordinator to put together a fun and educational visit for forty juniors and seniors from Denver Public Schools. Students were given a campus tour and a tour of Hill Hall, with demonstrations in the foundry and mechanical testing labs. Dr. Van Tyne, the MME assistant department chair, spoke to the students during this event about college and careers in STEM, as well as performing a few demonstrations of his own. During lunch, CSMMAC members held a breakout session in small groups with the students to talk openly with them about college and their options.  

 

 Pueblo High School STEM Visit & Tour: A large group of juniors and seniors from Pueblo High School visited the MME department for a tour of the labs, foundry, and some materials science demonstrations. The students were separated into smaller groups, which allowed for them to ask questions about college and careers in STEM and to be more engaged in the tours and demos.

Social Activities CSMMAC planned many events to expand the social network between faculty and students and encourage members to unwind from the stressors of the day with some laid­back fun.   Bow Tie Tying Tutorial with Dr. Van Tyne: Dr. Van Tyne, Associate Department Head for Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, has worn a bow tie to every class he has taught for over ten years and students consider his bow tie tradition to be an icon of the MME department. Dr. Van Tyne gave a presentation on the history of bow ties and instructed around students on how to properly tie a crisp and classy bow tie. 

 

 Halloween Costume Contest: We encouraged CSMMAC members and the MME department (faculty included) to dress up in Halloween costumes on October 30th and gather outside Hill Hall for a costume contest to be judged by department secretary Erin Stoll, Associate Department Head Dr. Van Tyne, and Dr. Brennecka. The judges convened and ultimately awarded the second place prizes to Waldo and the Card Against Humanity while Dr. Evil and Number 2 took home the first place cake. 

 

 Breakfast Club: The first Friday of every month, CSMMAC provides a light breakfast before classes to help MME students start their day. Everyone comes together in the student lounge to enjoy doughnuts, juice, fruit, and cereal. On Dead Day, the last day before final exams begin, CSMMAC provides a fancier meal of breakfast burritos from one of the many excellent burrito shops around Golden. A little bit of protein and spiciness is just what MME students need to rock their exams!

 Ski­SMMAC: Colorado is home to some of the best ski areas in the world. Why not enjoy them with your MME classmates? CSMMAC held a couple Ski­SMMAC days throughout the season at various resorts by organizing buddy lift tickets at reduced prices and carpools to and from the mountains. This event was a great opportunity for the undergraduates, graduate students, and faculty to spend time together outside of the classroom. 

 

Spring Campus Cookout: The Campus Cookout was held before the world famous E­days celebration to kick off the start of a fun weekend where hard working Mines students have a chance to let loose and enjoy a carnival, concert, and more. CSMMAC provided hamburgers and hot dogs to MME students and faculty for some lunchtime food­n­fun!  Cardboard Boat Race: Sea­SMMAC participated in the E­days traditional Cardboard Boat Race, where at least three people (attempt to) float down Clear Creek in a boat made of no more than cardboard and duct tape. The E­days theme for 2016 was “Around the World in 8E­days”, which CSMMAC reflected in their hot air balloon cardboard boat. They didn’t get very far down the creek, but had a great time building their masterpiece!

Movie Night: As the school year comes to a close, everyone is in need of some time to unwind. CSMMAC hosted a movie night in one of the larger MME lecture halls, providing popcorn, candy, and a place to kick back and watch Finding Nemo. Sunday nights were saved for Game of Thrones, which we projected in one of the lecture halls with the help of Dr. Bourne’s HBO Go password.   CSnack­n­Study Nights: Many MME students spend late nights in the department computer lab working on homework, lab reports, and studying for exams. This year, CSMMAC decided to hold a couple of “Snack­n­Study Nights”, providing pizza or milk and cookies to students in the lab preparing for big due dates or exams. This was a great way to support our members and remind everyone that we’re all in this together!   MME Spring Party: CSMMAC plans the MME departmental party in the spring where everyone comes together to celebrate the end of the school year and say “farewell” to the graduating seniors. The faculty present awards to graduating seniors who will be recognized at commencement for their achievements. This year, the spring party was held at the historic Buffalo Rose in downtown Golden. There was faculty trivia and “Name that baby!”, as well as senior trivia and post­grad plans. A photo booth and corn hole boards made for a fun and laid back event with faculty and students. The department looks forward to this event all year, and CSMMAC was proud to call this year’s party a success!

Chapter Management  The management and operations of the chapter would not be possible if not for the teamwork and collaboration of the executive board. The executive board of 2015­2016 outlined the chapter’s goals early on and identified which positions were responsible to contributing to the achievement of each of the goals. Accountability, communication, and excellent work ethic were just some of the strengths of the executive board members that contributed to a successful year for CSMMAC.   

Organization of General Meetings: General meetings of the chapter are held once per week on Monday evenings at 5pm., with the occasional Friday lunch meeting if it better suited a guest speaker. Members are provided a small meal before business starts. At the beginning of each meeting, a materials science or engineering trivia question is posed, with members who submit the correct answer winning points. The points system will be discussed more in depth in the “Points System” subsection. A slideshow presentation allows for each officer to give news and updates to the chapter in their respective areas in a short time, which leaves about 40­50 minutes available for our speaker or panel to present. Hosting weekly meetings presented some scheduling challenges, but ultimately keeps members engaged and interested in CSMMAC activities.

Organization of Executive Meetings: Executive meetings were held every Friday at 1pm so that the executive board could give updates on the state of the chapter, upcoming events, various other planning considerations for the chapter, and prepare for the general meeting on the following Monday. Executive meetings were moved to Friday this year in order to allow for more time to prepare for the general meeting over the weekend. The chair presides over both the executive and general meetings.  Dues: Collected every semester, the local chapter dues are set at $10, but can be increased or decreased from year to year. The money goes towards funding things like food at meetings, social events, and the CSMMAC t­shirts for members of the chapter. It is supplemental to the budget allocation from the school, which can only be appropriated for very specific items like subsidizing conference travel.  Elections: Elections were held in early March with multiple individuals running for each position. The next several weeks, the newly elected executive officers sat in on executive meetings and shadowed the person whose position they would take over next year. During this time, annual bylaw revisions are conducted so that incoming officers are more familiar with the structure and purpose of the chapter they are taking over.  Officer Transitions: Formal officer transitions are done at one of the last meetings of the year where one­on­one meetings are held to train incoming officers on tasks, responsibilities, and useful tips of successfully holding each position. A binder or digital folder  filled with useful information, forms, and procedures is passed down as well to help provide more reference material for the future. This year, the outgoing executive board shared their successes, mistakes, and reviewed the chapter goals set at the beginning of the year  with the incoming board as a group before moving on to individual transitions.   Bylaw Revisions: Bylaw revisions were held over two weeks in April so that the revisions could be presented and voted on after having one week for members to review the changes. The most significant revision this year was the addition of a “Treasurer Elect” position to the executive board. The Treasurer Elect would be appointed by the executive board in the fall semester after careful review and consideration of all interested candidates. The Treasurer Elect would train under the Treasurer during the spring semester before being formally voted Treasurer for the following academic year by the chapter members during elections. This position was created to ease the transition from treasurer to treasurer, as CSM requires somewhat complicated management of club funds that can be difficult to learn over one transition meeting. The first Treasurer Elect will be appointed in the fall of 2016 to serve in the spring of 2017.  Points System: The CSMMAC Points System serves as a fair and uniform way to track and reward active members for their service to the chapter. Attendance and participation in outreach events, scholarship winners, serving on the executive board. and general meeting attendance builds up points. At the end of the semester, the top point accumulators have the opportunity to be funded to travel to a conference under a chapter­subsidized budget. Conference travel is one of the most

exciting and rewarding opportunities we have, so this is how we incentivize involvement in CSMMAC to our members.   Officer Duties Chair: Serves as the principal point of contact between the chapter and the public, the chapter and its individual members, and the chapter and the partnering societies. He or she is ultimately responsible for all chapter activities and assumes all executive duties not otherwise delegated by the Bylaws.  Vice­Chair: Supports the Chair and aids whenever and wherever he or she can be of assistance to the Chair. Duties include organizing speakers from professional societies, industry, or within the department to present at meetings.  Treasurer: Oversees all fiscal responsibilities including producing a semesterly budget, tracking membership dues, and documenting CSMMAC funds.  Secretary: Documents topics discussed at CSMMAC meetings and maintains all chapter records and social media accounts. This includes annual revision of the Bylaws  Social Chair(s): Coordinate social activities each semester including the Back­to­School/Fall BBQ, End­of­Year Departmental Spring Party, and Breakfast Club(s), and more. The Social Chair(s) plays a key role in member recruitment and retainment. Outreach Chair(s): Organize and develop outreach activities to support departmental recruitment, campus events, and community service with an emphasis on exposing STEM to K­12 students.  Material Advantage Scholarship Database CSMMAC maintained a database that included all of the deadlines, requirements, and other information to make the scholarships easy to advertise to members, and easy for members to apply. Members can access this information through our school­sponsored club site, Orgsync. This year, one of our members was awarded a TMS scholarship advertised in this database.  Progress for Establishing a Keramos Chapter at Mines The Keramos bylaws are in their final stages of revisions and approval. The CSM chapter of Keramos hopes to receive its formal charter before MS&T 2016 in Salt Lake City..
