Our 52 member organizations include local, state,
and federal agencies, large and small conservation
organizations, cultural and education institutions,
municipalities, corporations, and both faith-based and
neighborhood volunteer groups. Under the CSI umbrella,
members collaborate on programs to increase their impact,
coordinate their efforts to maximize efficiency, and
promote their work collectively to increase participation.

The Calumet Stewardship Initiative (CSI) is a coalition that promotes a sustainable relationship between people and nature in the Calumet region of Northwest Indiana and Northeast Illinois. CSI envisions a Calumet region marked by vibrant communities and cultures, healthy natural areas, and a strong economy.

CSI TEAMSLAND STEWARDSHIP: focuses on ecological restoration efforts throughout the region. Team members train and recruit volunteer stewards, hold regular stewardship workdays, and assess stewardship needs for the region.
ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION: coordinates environmental education opportunities throughout the region. Members provide environmental education activities to schools and families, offer teachers professional development workshops, and connect people to nature.
SMART GROWTH: engages communities in projects focused on green corridor connections, smart stormwater management, and native landscaping that sustain and improve the region’s quality of life.

The Calumet region has a unique mix of high quality natural areas and a rich industrial history. By connecting youth and adults to nature in their backyard, we are working to protect these special places and develop the next generation of conservation leaders.
