There are not
many things
that date as
quickly as
technology.
The fast change of
technological change is also changing
consumption habits, which have altered
significantly in recent years. Even just five or
so years ago, the onset of multi-screen
viewing caught many companies by surprise.
Some large UK broadcasters admit they were
caught unawares that there was a demand
for people to watch videos on devices other
than the main TV set. Liberty Global CEO
Mike Fries at this year’s Cable Congress
went so far as to say that the cable industry
needs to thank Netflix, the early pioneer and
poster child of the OTT movement if you will,
for showing cable operators the way.
Studies estimate there are now 6+
connected devices in the average European
home and these are the new battle ground
for TV going forward. Conversely, despite the
onset of time-shifted TV in all its different
guises across all different platforms, live TV
still rules and has proved remarkably
resilient. It is easy to always get excited by
the next big thing on the horizon but the
broadcast industry also does a good job of
being grounded to its roots.
This combination of pragmatism and
optimism is also in the heart of the CSI
Awards. We like to keep up with the times
and introduce and honour new technologies
and achievements. Last year’s new ultra HD
category has grown in line with an evolving
ecosystem (as reflected by the variety of
entries on our shortlist) that will take over
ten years to play itself out. This year we
welcome HbbTV and Big Data & analytics
into the fold, both of which promise to bring
many benefits to businesses and consumers
alike. People often say that broadcasters
have been too slow to adapt to the
opportunities of data as the internet
continues to permeate the sector, so we look
forward to seeing how things develop on this
front.
Those who wisely argue that technical
complexities should be hidden away from
end-users know this is often the real
challenge. Behind every shiny UI is a backend
and piece of kit that is less sexy but crucial
to real-life operations. This is why CSI has
always prided itself on rewarding less
glamorous fields and will continue to do so.
At the same time, a few of the platforms
that have made this year’s shortlist have
been around for two or three years but have
managed to innovate to stay relevant, a little
like fine wine.
On that note, come to Room E102 at
the RAI and do enjoy the drink as much
as the trophy celebrations and well done
to everyone who has made the shortlist.
Hope to see all of you back in 2015!

Teaming up with Nagra and Harmonic,
Abertis Telecom launched the world’s first
commercial MPEG-DASH OTT multiscreen
service based on HbbTV 1.5 specification
in September 2013. By supporting DASH,
a new universal streaming format,
Abertis Telecom, Nagra, and Harmonic
are breaking new ground and building the
future of multiscreen delivery. Leveraging
the powerful new infrastructure, Spanish
broadcasters and pay-TV services
providers can cost-effectively deploy
advanced multiscreen television services
to more than 12 million homes.
HTTV
httvLink
The solution is the worldwide first
deployment of HbbTV on an IPTV
network. It allows IPTV STBs to get
immediate access to popular HbbTV
services offered by broadcasters. It
allows the extension of their live content
with attractive OTT services. It also
allows IPTV network operators to build
their services such as Program Guide,
VoD, Catchup with the HbbTV open
standard for connected services. The
solution also supports advanced services
such as multi-screen content access and
graceful QoS degradation from IPTV to
OTT when a specific service is not eligible
over IPTV to a specific subscriber.0

Nanocubes
Like a Monet, massive
data sets are
unintelligible until
they are analysed in
both a macro and micro view, highlighting
the importance of data visualisation
technologies. AT&T Labs created
nanocubes, a visualisation software that
provides users with real-time interactivity
of massive datasets. The software was
released into GitHub’s open source
community in late 2013.

Micro Analytics
A monitoring and analysis solution for
IP media and OTT services, encompassing
miniature probes, embedded software
agents, and data correlation and analysis
servers. microAnalytics provides the only
economically feasible alternative to the
cost and inefficiency of on-site visits
by engineering maintenance staff when
problems arise with the subscriber’s
service quality. It allows service providers
to access real-time detailed information
from all subscribers, and use advanced
correlated data analysis for service
provisioning and planning, diagnostics,
pinpoint fault tracking and pre-fault
prediction.

VCS Analytics Bringing Big Data to TV
A one-stop shop for all analytics needs
from measuring service performance to
understanding content consumption
trends and giving operation-wide insights
on multi-screen offering. VCS Analytics
at its core is a problem-solving service.
Service providers don’t have the same
profile of revenue opportunities or service
optimisation issues, but the data science
that can solve all these problems can be
part of the same infrastructure.
Genius Digital
Insight Platform
It is becoming increasingly complicated
for operators to collect, integrate, and
manage customer data. Insight is an end-
to-end data warehousing solution,
capturing, analysing and applying data
for content providers and operators,
providing a complete understanding of
consumer behaviour experience. Built in
response to the growing complexity of
managing viewer data, it allows targeting
four key areas: customer acquisition,
content acquisition, subscriber marketing
and customer retention/churn.

CareReflex
A powerful operational intelligence app
that can dramatically reduce the costs
associated with MSO network operations
and customer support functions, by
rapidly identifying the root causes of
service issues impacting on customer
experience. CareReflex continuously
correlates over 20 unique big data
streams from disparate network
operations and customer support
systems to detect and diagnose the
cause of anomalous events. It eliminates
unnecessary engineer call-outs and
automates call handling.

Adrenalin Business Intelligence
BI is a set of tools for operators
developed to help them maximise VoD
and linear broadcast revenues and
margins. It lets operators combine data
from many different components of the
Adrenalin platform as well as external
data sources. The data is stored in a data
warehouse and made available through
