CSE@UTA First Time Freshman Mentoring

The CSE Department at UTA will provide support to first-time freshmen through a program of mentoring which will utilize the skills and knowledge of older CSE department students to increase the success and retention of newer students. This program will create a group of junior and senior mentors to be paired with (up to three) freshmen in a mentoring capacity. The juniors and seniors in the group are required to apply for the mentoring positions and will receive a small one-time per semester stipend for each student they mentor. The receipt of the full versus partial stipend will depend on positive feedback about the mentor from the freshman mentee.

The freshmen will be given the opportunity to either select or be matched with a mentor to pair with them through their freshman semester or year. The process of mentoring will contain elements of a student-to-student ongoing major-focused orientation and a one-on-one support group. It is expected that each mentor pair will meet about an hour twice a month throughout the year. A list of topics will be developed for mentors to discuss with their freshmen with the goal of preventing some of the more common freshman and future problems.

Freshmen and mentors will be required to document their meetings and submit this documentation upon request. At the end of the semester, the freshman will fill out a report about the mentoring process and this will be used in assuring the success of the mentoring process and the quality of the mentors.

We believe that a mentoring program within the department will increase the likelihood that these freshmen will remain at UTA and successfully complete a degree from CSE in their academic careers.

We anticipate that mentors would: Assist freshmen with particularly challenging and highly

time-consuming computer science, calculus, and physics coursework

Provide peer monitoring of freshman progress to prevent them from becoming overwhelmed in mid-semester

Give information on how to access resources available for student support in mathematics and other topics and the experience of how beneficial these resources can be.

Advise on self-discipline and planning skills that will allow freshmen to meet the requirements of programming and technical coursework successfully.

Ans: Computer and information technology have created many new situations and consequences unlike those before this era. Trying to apply old standards will not always work. Sometimes new ways of thinking about things like intellectual property, invasion of privacy, free speech, etc. are needed to understand the new possibilities.

Ans: The issues of speed & capability regarding information technology give rise to problems with simply applying standard morals and/or principles to computer cases. For instance, free speech; how do we apply current standards of free speech to web sites of questionable or debated or slanderous content. This is a problem due to the “nature of the beast”, i.e., IT and computers.
