Introduction to the feature

2 Introduction to the featureBSS30385 "Circuit switched dynamic Abis pool” (CSDAP) is a feature that offers a common Abis transmission pool that can be shared by all speech calls in a base station control function (BCF) cabinet. A common Abis transmission pool is useful with feature that needs more Abis transmission capacity than the legacy fixed Abis interface offers. An example of such a feature is Orthogonal Subchannel (OSC) Half Rate with SAIC MS.

In legacy Abis interface there are allocated 16 kbit/s fixed transmission capacity from Abis ETPCM for each radio timeslot. With the OSC Half Rate with SAIC MS feature more Abis transmission is needed for a radio timeslot where two calls are multiplexed into one half rate TCH. This additional transmission is needed only when there is high load in the cell and, therefore common Abis transmission pool that is shared between the cells of a BCF cabinet, utilizes the available Abis transmission capacity efficiently.

5 Functional description

5.1 Functional detailsThe “Circuit switched dynamic Abis pool” feature offers the possibility to create common transmission pools for OSC circuit switched traffic in a BCF cabinet. CSDAPs are con-tinuous blocks of 64 kbit/s physical timeslots. The size of CSDAPs can be selected in 1 timeslot steps. A maximum of 4 CSDAPs can be created in a BCF and 1000 CSDAPs in a BSC. The size of a CSDAP in ETSI can be 1 (minimum) to 31 (maximum) and in ANSI from 1 to 24.

CSDAP is an optional software and can be controlled with a capacity license that is based on the number of CSDAP timeslots in the CSDAPs attached to BCFs. The license is activated by setting the feature state to ON or CONF before the CSDAP is created and then attaching the CSDAP to the BCF. CSDAPs can exist in the same or a different Abis ETPCM as the TRXs using it. All the TRXs existing under a BCF cabinet can use the CSDAPs attached to the BCF. The CSDAP area is independent of the transmission capacity configurations of other TRX objects. Abis transmission is dynamically allocated from CSDAPs.

5.1.1 CSDAP radio network objectCSDAP information is stored to radio network object called Circuit switched dynamic Abis pool (CSDAP). The CSDAP radio network object contains the following informa-tion:

• CSDAP IDEach CSDAP has its own CSDAP ID that is used to identify the CSDAP. And the value of the ID can range between 1 and 1000. The CSDAP ID parameter can be entered during CSDAP creation and once set, the ID cannot be modified.

• Circuit group numberThe BSC allocates its own circuit group number (CMECGR) to each CSDAP during the CSDAP creation, the circuit group number cannot be modified later.

• Abis ETPCMThis parameter defines the Abis ETPCM where the CSDAP situated on the BSC side. The Abis ETPCM parameter can be entered when CSDAP is created and cannot be modified later.

• First timeslotThis parameter defines the first timeslot used for the CSDAP in Abis ETPCM. The first timeslot parameter can be entered when CSDAP is created and can be modified later, but not simultaneously with last timeslot parameter. BSC does not allow mod-ification if the first timeslot is greater than the last timeslot (always first timeslot less than last timeslot)

• Last timeslotThis parameter defines the last timeslot used for the CSDAP in Abis ETPCM. The last timeslot parameter can be entered when CSDAP is created and can be modified later but not simultaneously with first timeslot parameter. BSC does not allow mod-ification if the first timeslot is greater than the last timeslot.

Functional description

• BCF Abis IFThis parameter defines the Abis IF number in BCF site. The BCF Abis IF parameter can be entered when CSDAP is created and can be modified later while the CSDAP does not have attachment to the BCF. This parameter is not used by UltraSite BTS.

• BCF timeslot shiftThis parameter defines the offset between CSDAP timeslots in Abis ETPCM and BCF Abis IF. The BCF Timeslot Shift parameter can be entered when CSDAP is created and can be modified later while the CSDAP does not have attachment to BCF. This parameter is not used by UltraSite BTS.

There can be a maximum of 4 separate CSDAPs attached to one BCF, but a single CSDAP can be connected to only one BCF.

5.1.2 Supervising CSDAPThe BSC detects the connection problems with the BTS that affect the CSDAP. When the BSC detects a point to point malfunction in CSDAP, it stops hunting resources from the CSDAP and sets a penalty timer for the CSDAP. BSC also sets an alarm3536 CIRCUIT SWITCHED DYNAMIC ABIS POOL FAILURE to indicate the situation. A point to point malfunction is defined to happen when several consecutive calls using certain CSDAP are released because of remote transcoder failure.

When the penalty timer expires BSC checks the working circuits in CSDAP circuit group before it allows resource allocation from the CSDAP. If there are working circuits avail-able, BSC allows traffic on CSDAP and cancels the alarm indicating the CSDAP problem.

5.2 Functional splitBSCThe BSC handles the following functions of the CSDAP feature:

• Stores CSDAP configuration information in radio network database. • Stores CSDAP circuit routings (circuits groups). • Delivers CSDAP configuration to BTS in BTS_CONF_DATA message. • Finds resources from CSDAP before OSC-1 channel activation. • Sends Abis transmission information to BTS in the Channel Activation message

when the OSC-1 channel is activated.

BTSThe BTS handles the following functions of the CSDAP feature:

• Receives CSDAP configuration from BSC in BTS_CONF_DATA messages. • Receives Abis transmission information to be used for OSC-1 call in Channel Acti-

vation message.

NetActNetAct is responsible for supporting CSDAP object class parameters and alarms with a valid license. It is also responsible for handling the measurements and counters.

6 System impactsThis chapter is divided into the following sections: • “Relations to other features” • “Impacts on SoC” • “Impacts on interfaces”

6.1 Relations to other featuresCircuit switched dynamic Abis pool is related to the following features:

• BSS21309 “OSC Half Rate with SAIC MS” and BSS21534 “OSC Full Rate with SAIC MS”When the OSC half rate/full rate feature is in use, it always requires additional Abis transport capacity for the OSC-1 connection in a half rate/full rateTCH channel. The additional Abis transport capacity can be provided by the Circuit switched dynamic Abis pool feature.

• BSS21325 “8k TRAU for OSC AMR FR”8k TRAU for OSC AMR FR feature is an alternative way to offer legacy Abis trans-port for OSC full rate feature. There is no need for additional Abis transport capacity for OSC full rate feature but system restricts Abis bandwidths of both multiplexed AMR FR calls (OSC-0 and OSC-1) to 8kbit/s by allowing AMR codecs only up to 7.4kbit/s and then utilizing 8kbits/s TRAU frames on Abis. The OSC-0 call is trans-ferred in the first half of the 16kbit/s Abis timeslot and the OSC-1 call in the second half of the 16kbit/s Abis timeslot that is fixedly allocated for a full rate TCH. Both the Circuit swithched dynamic Abis pool feature and the 8k TRAU for OSC AMR FR feature can be active in BSC at the same time. The BSC makes the selection between CSDAP mode and 8k TRAU mode for OSC full rate on the basis of the parameter 8k TRAU for DFR Enabled (BTS).

6.2 Impacts on SoCThe Circuit switched dynamic Abis pool has effects on “3GPP TS 48.058 base station controller – base transceiver station (BSC – BTS) interface layer 3 specification”. For more information on effects according to the interface impacts, see section Impacts on intefaces.

6.3 Impacts on interfacesAbis telecom interfaceThe BSC deploys CSDAP on a call-by-call basis. It gives the CSDAP resources to BTS in the Channel activation message. Fields have been added to the following information elements:

• CSDAP resource is defined in the Channel activation message as a conditional CSDAP Circuit IE.

• CSDAP Circuit IE shall only be present when OSC is deployed and OSC-1 subchan-nel is indicated.

• CSDAP Circuit IE (CSDAP resource for OSC-1 subchannel).

System impacts

A proprietary element 'Bits on Abis' in the 3rd octet of Channel Mode IE indicates number of used Abis bits when CSDAP Circuit IE is present in Channel Activation message.

Abis O&M interfaceBSC provides CSDAP configuration for the BTS.

• BTS_CONF_DATA (fields for CSDAP) • BSC can request BTS to perform Abis loop test for CSDAP circuit • BTS_TEST_REQ (ABIS_LOOP_TEST) (Testing of CSDAP circuits is indicated with

CSDAP id) • BTS_TEST_REPORT (ABIS_LOOP_TEST)

Circuit switched dynamic Abis pool traffic measurementThe CSDAP traffic measurement counters are as below:

Counter Number Description

CSDAP RESOURCE ALLOCATION ATTEMPTS FOR DHR

001265 Number of CSDAP resource allocation attempts for OSC Double Half Rate.

DHR MULTIPLEXING FAILURE DUE TO CSDAP RESOURCE

001266 Number of times OSC Double Half Rate multiplexing is triggerred but CSDAP resource allocation fails because of CSDAP congestion, CSDAP being out of order due to failure, CSDAP hunting timer expiry or CSDAP hunting error.

CSDAP RESOURCE ALLOCATION ATTEMPTS FOR DFR

001295 Number of CSDAP resource allocation attempts for OSC Full Rate.

DFR MULTIPLEXING FAILURE DUE TO CSDAP RESOURCE

001296 Double full rate multiplexing has triggerred but CSDAP resource alloca-tion fails because of CSDAP congestion, CSDAP being out of order due to failure, CSDAP hunting timer expiry or CSDAP hunting error.

Activating and Deactivating the feature

8.1 Activating the Circuit switched dynamic Abis pool featurePrerequisites • Valid licence for CSDAP is installed • Flexi EDGE BTS SW EX 4.0 • Zero circuit is created

1 Print all the circuits to check if a circuit group exists for Null PCM (RCI)RCI:SEA=3:CGR=all_circuits:PRINT=4;

If some circuit group contains PCM-TSL 0-1 then routing has been already done for a null circuit. Proceed to step 4.

2 Create a circuit group for Null PCM (RCC).ZRCC:TYPE=SPE,NCGR=<circuit group name>,CGR=<circuit group number>:FORMAT=0,HUNTED=N;

3 Add circuits to the circuit group for Null PCM (RCA).ZRCA:NCGR=<circuit group name>:CRCT=0-0&-1;

4 Activate the feature in the BSCEnter the following command to activate the feature.

ZW7M:FEA=1671:ON;

5 Create or modify CSDAP related RNW parametersEnter the following command to create a new CSDAP in the RNW database:

ZEST:CID=<CSDAP ID>,CRCT=<CIRCUIT IDENTIFICATION>-<start tsl>&&-<end tsl>, BAIF = <BCF Abis IF>, SHIFT=<BCF Timeslot Shift>;

Enter the following command to modify CSDAP parameters to the RNW database:

ZESU:CID=<CSDAP ID>,NFT=<new first timeslot>/NLT=<new last,BAIF = <BCF Abis IF>, SHIFT=<BCF Timeslot Shift>;

Enter the following command to output the CSDAP parameters:

ZESB:CID=<CSDAP ID>;

6 Attach a CSDAP to BCFEnter the following command to attach a new CSDAP to the BCF in the RNW database.

ZEFM:bcf_id::CSDAP1=csdap_pool_id:;

End

8.2 Deactivating the Circuit switched dynamic Abis pool feature

1 Deactivate feature state ON to CONF

2 Detach the CSDAP from BCFZEFM:<bcf id>:::CSDAP1=0,:::;

3 Delete existing CSDAPs ZESV:CID=<CSDAP ID>;

4 Change feature state to OFF

g Even if the CSDAP feature is deactivated, there is no need to remove zero circuit.

End
