AsItakeontheroleofpresident,SheriStrydhorstmovesintothePastPresidentrole.ThankyouSheriforalltheworkyouhaveputintotheCSAinthelastseveralyears.YouhaveleFbigshoestofillandIlookforwardtocon?nuetoworkwithyou.Ourdepar?ngexecu?vemembers,JaswinderSinghandCalebNiemeyer,alsodeservemanythanksforthe?meandefforttheygave.Andahardywelcometothenewmembers:MumtazCheema,thePresident-Elect,AmyMangin,theStudentRepresenta?ve,BenThomas,TheCanadianJournalofPlantScienceRepresenta?veandLoganSkori,inthenewposi?onofIndustryRepresenta?ve.InthecomingyearwewillworktogetherwiththeothermembersoftheCSAexecu?vetosupportandimproveoursociety.
Thisyearwehavealllivedthroughunprecedentedevents.Thereali?esofCOVID-19haverockedthefounda?onsofmanyofourpersonalandprofessionallivesandimpactedeachofus.Inanormalyear,thehighlightfortheCSAisourjointconferenceandAnnualGeneralMee?ng.LastmonthwewouldhavemetinSaskatoonforthe8thInterna?onalCropScienceCongress.Likeallpublicgatherings,thecongresswasnecessarilybutunfortunatelycancelled.OurAGMwasmovedon-lineandwasasuccessthankstothediligentandcarefulprepara?onbyNancyZubriskiandSheriStrydhorst.Wehad43a]endeesandnotechnicalglitches!
AhighlightoftheAGMwastheCanadianJournalofPlantScience(CJPS)andCanadianSciencePublishingupdatepresenta?onbyBrianBeresandJosephineScior?no,theEditorinChiefandManagingEditor,respec?vely,ofCJPS.AsCSAmemberswehaveastronginterestinthesuccessoftheCJPS.WecanhaveanimportantimpactbymaintainingandincreasingtheCanadiancontentintheCJPS.PleasetryhardtosubmitatleastonemanuscripttoCJPSin2020andcon?nuetomakeitahabiteveryyear.
AnotherhighlightoftheAGMwasourawardpresenta?ons.TheDis?nguishedAgronomistawardwenttoBruceCoulman,theEarlyCareerAgronomistawardwenttoBillBiligetu,andthePestManagementAwardwenttoMa]hewWenglerandareallverywelldeserved.Whatimpressedmethemostwasthatwereceivedseveralnomina?onsineachcategory;thisshowsthatwehaveanimpressivedepthofsuperbresearchersinoursociety.Withoutaconferencevenuetohostpresenta?onsfromBruceandMa]hew,weweren’tabletofullyhonourthem.Wehopethatthiscanberec?fiedatthe2021CSAmee?nginO]awa.Thismee?ngwillbeheldJune12-17,2021asajointmee?ngwiththeCanadianSocietyforHor?culturalScienceandtheCanadianPhytopathologicalSociety.

Intheseunusualandratheruncertain?mes,theCSAwilladapt.Ourmee?ngin2021willhopefullybeinperson,hopefullyfacetofacebutmaybewearingmasks,hopefullyvaccinatedandreadytore-entertheworld.Therewillbepostersandstudentpresenta?ons,andCSAawardsgivenout.Weareop?mis?callyplanningforthis,butwillalsoworktowardsavirtualcongress,ifthatbecomesnecessary.

EasternDirector-JamieLarsenDr.JamieLarsenreceivedhisPh.D.inPlantAgriculturewithafocusonwheatbreedingfromtheUniversityofGuelphin2012.From2011to2018,hisresearchatAgricultureandAgri-FoodCanada’sLethbridgeResearchandDevelopmentCentrefocusedondevelopingperennialwheat,perennialcerealrye,fallrye,winterdurumandwintertri?caleforgrainandlivestockproducerswiththegoalofmaximizingthesustainabilityofcerealproduc?onsystemsthroughbreeding,agronomyandmoleculargene?capproaches.In2018,hetransferredtotheHarrowResearchandDevelopmentCentretorevitalizetheAAFCdrybeanbreedingprogramforEasternCanada.ThefocusofhisresearchprogramatHarrowistobreedforresistancetofungal,bacterial,viralandnematodepests.Theprogramalsoplacesalargeemphasisonmethoddevelopmentindrybeanbreeding,includingspeedbreedingandincorpora?ngnearinfraredreflectancespectroscopyandotherhighthroughputmethodstoassessdrybeancookingandcanningquality.
