INTRODUCTION

Ganesh Chaturthi is a Hindu festival celebrated on the occasion of birthday of Lord Ganesha. Widely worshipped as the God of wisdom, prosperity and good fortune. Celebrated all over India mainly in Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Goa.

ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT

Animals, fishes drink this toxic water that eventually ends up in our food chain through milk products, sea food or meat.

Careless dumping of Ganesh idols in water bodies blocks the natural flow of water.

This results in stagnation and breeding of mosquitoes and other harmful pests.

The polluted water causes several diseases including skin diseases.

Damages the ecosystem - In many areas, the same polluted water gets pumped into homes.

Such pollution cause damage to eco system:- Killing the fishes- Damaging the plants- Blocking the natural flow of water and causing stagnation

Damages health by polluting drinking water sources causing:- Breathing problem- Blood disease- Skin diseases

SOLUTION

Use eco-friendly clay idols painted with natural colors.

Use permanent idols made of stone and perform a symbolic immersion and reuse the idol each year.

Avoid public water bodies to immerse the idols, instead immerse idol in bucket or tub.

Use cloth, wood, paper, and other natural materials for decoration that are safer when immersed in water.

Use artificial immersion tanks made by government for immersion purposes.

Use of small size natural clay, natural material ,fiber, or even recycled paper made idols avoid the use of idols made from PoP.
