Cryocooler Technologies

At the forefront of the development and implementation of

Joule-Thomson and Stirling cycle cryocooler technologies

The latest generation of Honeywell self

regulating, ‘demand-flow’ J-T coolers

are now even more effective in terms of

temperature stability and minimisation

of gas usage.

Honeywell J-T coolers and gas supplies

have been specified on most of the missile

programs, either in use or under devel-

opment within Europe, and are now being

applied to major programs within the

USA and the Far East.

Linear compressor Stirling cycle cryocoolers

The result of development and

industrialisation of an Oxford University

design concept, Honeywell Cryocoolers

incorporate unique, patented technology

that sets them aside from other Stirling

cycle cooler designs.

They are the only coolers in their class

that are offered with a warranted life of

over 20,000 hours, whilst actual operating

life is designed to substantially exceed this.

Designed for use in high-duty industrial

applications to replace existing cooling

systems using liquid nitrogen or Joule-

Thomson techniques, Honeywell cryo-

coolers are also designed and qualified

to meet exacting Military Standards.

Joule-Thomson cryogenic coolers

For over fifty years Honeywell has been at

the forefront of innovation and development

of Joule-Thomson (J-T) coolers for the

cryogenic cooling of infra-red detectors

used in thermal imagers and missile

seekers. With few moving parts, J-T

coolers remain the simplest, lightest and

easiest solution for cryogenic cooling in

many applications.

Joule-Thomson (J-T) coolers have the ability

to achieve a desired temperature extremely

rapidly (often in less than one second) and

maintain those temperatures within a

tight tolerance, whilst at the same time

optimising gas consumption, making the

Honeywell J-T cooler the only choice for

many applications.

Integrated Technologies

Honeywell is firmly established within the

aircraft equipment industry and has

remained at the forefront of the develop-

ment and implementation of fluid control

technology solutions for aerospace and

defence applications. For over fifty years

the company has been the acknowledged

world-wide leader in Joule-Thomson cooling

technologies for infra-red applications.

More recently the development of Stirling

cycle cryocoolers has affirmed the company

as the premier provider of ultra long life

cooling devices for applications within

industrial, communications and space

environments.

Today, Honeywell is involved in the supply

of equipment for the demanding and often

harsh environments of missiles, fighting

vehicles, underwater weapons and

submarines. Honeywell also provides

a comprehensive range of Customer

Services to support products in service.

For the future, Honeywell equipment is

already specified for use on many of the

major missile programs entering service

in the first decade of the 21st century,

and is also penetrating new markets

such as Security and Homeland defence

with advanced technology, long life

cryocoolers. All of this has resulted from

the continuous high levels of investment

in product development.

Pressure vessels for gas storage

The technology and manufacturing

processes originally developed to

provide safe, high-pressure gas

supplies conforming to Def.Stan

58-96 for Joule-Thomson (J-T)

coolers, has resulted in the creation

of high integrity pressure vessels.

These allow for the successful

storage of gases at high pressure

over long periods of time, without

degradation of performance.

Gas bottles are machined from

solid and electron beam welded.

This ensures consistent mechanical

integrity and repeatability of

structure and shape, even after

The heart of this unique technology centres

on ‘non-contact’ dynamic sealing of the

internal working gas, coupled with a high-

reliability linear electric drive.

The product concept continues to evolve

in order to meet the individual and exacting

requirements of our customers from the

communications and instrumentation

markets, including manufacturing

compressors qualified for space satellite

applications.

successive charge/discharge

cycles. Storage life is typically

in the range of 20-25 years.

The release of stored gas is most

typically achieved by electrical

initiation of a pyrotechnic motor,

acting on a specially machined

release mechanism, thus ensuring

a rapid, reliable release of the

stored gas.

In all cases Honeywell manufacture

high pressure gas bottles to exacting

cleanliness standards, thereby

ensuring that downstream

components are protected from

contamination.

Typical uses are:

• Supply of cryogenic cooling

gas to infra-red missile seekers

• Wing deployment systems

• Gyro spin-up

• Weapons release

• Engine cover removal systems
