LETTERLETTERLETTERLETTER FROM THE CHAIRFROM THE CHAIRFROM THE CHAIRFROM THE CHAIR Dear Resident

RE-ESTABLISHMENT OF THREE CROSSES NEIGHBOURHOOD

WATCH

We first established Neighbourhood Watch in Three Crosses about 30 years ago. In

recent years, it influence has diminished, and needs to be renewed. To achieve

this, please attend the public meeting below.

Meeting at Three Crosses Community Centre

Tuesday, 15th

. October, 2013 @ 7.30 p.m.

It is widely regarded that having a Neighbourhood Watch can:

• Reduce / prevent local crime and disorder

• Reduce fear of crime

• Address issues relating to anti-social behaviour

• Create safer neighbourhoods

• Build community spirit and cohesion

• Reassure members of the public

• Enhance partnership working with other community groups

• Assist in the detection and apprehension of criminals through members

providing information to the police

• Improve quality of life and the local environment

Of course, some home contents insurers will reduce the premium if you live in a

Neighbourhood Watch area.

If you are unable to attend the meeting, but want to get involved, then contact me

on 872038.

Best regards

Local Development Plan Update

All those residents, who submitted their objections to the candidate site

proposals, should have been notified about the current City Council consultation

re the Preferred Strategy. See Page 4 for the dates.

I understand that the main focus of this consultation are the three main strategic

sites of Felindre, Penllergaer and Gowerton/Waunarlwydd. These would make a

major contribution to achieving the requisite number of residential home builds

required. Once this consultation is over, and, presumably, residents, in areas other

that the three identified strategic sites, will not be too concerned about the

development of these sites, then City Council LDP Officers will be turning their

attention to candidate site appraisal

In respect of Three Crosses, the most significant paragraph, in the Preferred

Strategy document, is 6.50. Three Crosses falls within the Gower and Gower Fringe

area, which basically runs from Penclawdd through to Pennard as shown in Figure

7.1. Para. 6.49 recognises that there are significant constraints to building

opportunities, particularly in respect of the landscape and biodiversity in this

zone.

However, the comments, in para 6.50, make reference to the northern part of the

Gower and Gower Fringe area, which, presumably could include Three Crosses.

Some residents have already expressed concerns to me about these comments.

Officers are very well aware of the objections to the submitted candidate sites for

Three Crosses, but if you have concerns re the comments in para 6.50, then you

have every opportunity to express your concerns, either in writing or electronically

by 31st

. October, 2013, and that is the advice I have been giving when I have been

contacted..

AND DON’T FORGET…..

Get together with your friends and neighbours to come along….

That’s what Sophie Earl-Park did in Coed Lan. She went round to neighbours and

has already gathered together and reserved a table for 10. In dropping off the

deposits she commented:”It is a really good opportunity to get together both with

the neighbours I know well and those not so well over the Christmas period.

Anything that helps build community both on my street and across the village is a

great idea!”

================================================== REINSTATING THE VILLAGE PUMP

One of the projects is to reinstate the Village Pump near

Tirminydd Road/Pant Y Dwr – we are looking for anyone who

can remember what it looked like and where it was? Or if

there are any old pictures available. Contact any Council

Member if you have any information.

CDSA The CDSA are looking for anyone interested in working to develop a wildlife

website bespoke to Crwys Community Woodland. A wildflower survey is already

under way with input from Gower society. We are looking for photographers,

ecologists, Biologists, teachers, IT enthusiasts etc.

We also want to increase our regular volunteer numbers to become involved with

woodland management and or surveying and monitoring the area.

We have completed the accessible path and this now forms a complete loop of the

woodland. We have seen an increase in use of the area by the community

especially those with young children in pushchairs we would like to thank all dog

owners using the woodland for respecting the signs and by doing so have allowed

the area to be used by more of the community.

Volunteering days at the woodland are usually on every Thursday but not all so

please contact Mary Rees at [email protected] if you would like to get

involved.

Correction: In a previous edition we suggested that off lead roaming on the common with

your dog was a good option. This is not the case and readers should remember that there is

the Commons Code which can be found at www.gowercommons.co.uk with Point 8: Always

keep dogs on a lead. We apologise for any confusion.

WALKING GROUP : The weekday walking group continues to walk in stages all

round Gower, in November getting round to North Gower from Llanmadoc to

Llandimore. Everyone is welcome including dogs for most walks, although check

with the walk leader beforehand to ensure it is suitable. The April walk from Port

Eynon to Mewslade and back involved nearly 30 stiles which did prove a challenge

for some of our four legged companion!.

families to the many available routes that can taken straight from the village as

well as what can be found at Crwys Woodland. If there are some willing families

who would like to walk with others, then do feel free to set something up and

advertise in the Newsletter or on the website.

FILM SOCIETY

The Film Society season has kicked off with a good number of members signing up

for the full season. Everyone is welcome to attend any suitable film so check out

the What’s On for what is coming soon and look at our page on the website to find

more details on a specific film. Remember too that we have a full selection of

prior films, which any resident is welcome to borrow. See our website page for

THE OLD SCHOOLHOUSE

Some of the more observant passers-by will

have noticed that the old school house now

has a locked gate.

During the drop-in sessions earlier this year

one of the areas in the village identified for

improvement was the old school house,

opposite the current Crwys Primary.

The council contacted the Chapel to discuss

the issue and found that they were already planning to make improvements to the

building. As a first stage, the council agreed to financially support the securing of

the building and the chapel have now fitted a gate which will keep out unwelcome

visitors while allowing free access to the bats and swallows. Debris and waste has

built up inside the building over the years and Councillor Smart is arranging for

Swansea City Council Environmental Health department to safely clear the area.

As a second stage, the council would like to fit an information and interpretation

panel on the side of the building to help residents and school children alike

understand the history of the building and the conditions of the time.

If anyone in the village has any information, photographs or memories to share

regarding the Old School House, please contact Councillor White using the details

in the back of this magazine.

At Christmas remember the Carols Round the Tree

Event at the Community Centre on Wednesday 18th

December 2013 – 6.30pm till 9.00pm.
