Iowa City Hospice’s Missionis to be the leaders in providing exceptional patient-centered palliative care and grief support

Iowa City Hospice’s Principle of PracticeAs a community-oriented, not for profit organization, Iowa City Hospice is dedicated to offering services to

everyone regardless of an individual’s ability to pay.

Recognizing Those Who Support Our CauseAt the Walk for Dignity site are two Iowa City Hospice Tribute Walls that recognize our most generous

donors from the past three decades.

Honorary Walk for Dignity Families, Estate Gifts, and exceptionally generous Memorials are also recognized. The Tribute Walls were made possible through a generous gift from Hills Bank and Trust Company and in-kind support from Watts Vault & Monument Company.

This year at our annual Walk for Dignity, we will be remembering your loved ones and the loved ones of all who attend. This time of remembering will occur at 11:30 am by the Memorial Wreath. Please arrive early to tie a ribbon on the wreath and write the name of your loved one. These names will be read during a short ceremony.

Thank you for your continued support of Iowa City Hospice! Because of your generosity we have been able to continue meeting our mission to be the leaders in providing exceptional patient-centered palliative care and grief support to anyone affected by a terminal illness. We continue to honor the principles of our founders by providing care to all who need it regardless of ability to pay.

Our Annual Report this year includes a story about the Classy Chassy Cruisers, an amazing organization that enlivens our community with their treasured vehicles. Beyond that, they have been tireless and effective supporters of Iowa City Hospice. As we have had the great privilege to represent ICH at these events, we have come to know the members as sincere and committed community members.

As health care changes, it is important to be open to new and changing models of care. We are thrilled to be able to provide a new model of palliative care. Care Choices, a special program, offers community-based palliative services to those who meet certain criteria. This is part of a Medicare demonstration model that will measure how this can benefit individuals. As the project continues, we will update you on the progress and challenges associated with this new model.

2016 saw challenges and successes, which we will share with you in our report. Again, we wish to thank you for your generous and ongoing support!

Maybe you’ve seen a local cruise-in: an array of gleaming cars in a mall parking lot on a balmy Friday evening. The line-up includes well-loved cars and trucks of all ages and all colors, from classics sporting large tail fins to sleek convertibles to dragsters and even pedal cars.

Sound familiar? You probably saw the Classy Chassy Cruisers Car Club of Iowa City. These car enthusiasts keep a busy calendar of auto shows, tours, parades, and social events all year ‘round. But in addition to sharing their enjoyment of autos and their expertise, members share a generosity of spirit toward local not-for-profit organizations. And Iowa City Hospice is chief among them.

In fact, Classy Chassy Cruisers’ long-time support of Iowa City Hospice has earned the Cruisers the designation Honorary Walk Family 2017 in the annual Walk for Dignity, planned for Sunday, April 23. Many Cruisers members will join the walk and others will volunteer to carry out the event. It isn’t the group’s first involvement with the walk, either. Members provided music and public announcements at the 2016 Walk for Dignity.

“We organized ourselves as a not-for-profit,” said CCC President Mark Heacock, “so early on, we said, ‘Why not raise money for other community not-for-profits?’”

Classy cars + generosity = strong Hospice support

“Every year I look forward to the participation of Classy Chassy Cruisers. They have been represented at the Walk since 2006 and team members have solicited over $12,000 outside of the donations from their

organization. These wonderful people truly support us and the community.”

When the Cruisers formed in 2001 with nine members, one of those charter members was living with hemophilia. In a spirit of giving, CCC chose a hemophilia-related organization as its very first beneficiary. Other worthy charities followed in the next few years, including the Arthritis Foundation, Ronald McDonald House, Systems Unlimited, Elder Services of Iowa City, and others.

But over the years Iowa City Hospice has earned a special place in the hearts of members and a strong commitment has formed.

“Several members of our group have been touched by Hospice,” says member Mike Drapac. “But anyone whose life

“there’s an emotional draw,” says member Mike drapac, speaking of members’ enthusiasm for autos. It may be fond memories of a first car, your dad’s favorite car, or a long-ago joy ride in a Mustang. some members don’t even own cars, but enjoy the nostalgia and friendship found among the Cruisers.

with the group’s cruise-ins located at Coral Ridge Mall since 2013, I-80 drivers sometimes stop to enjoy the show. that includes visitors from as far as arizona and alaska. once an I-80 traveler stopped to share a rare race car that he was transporting cross-country.

In addition to their ongoing support for Iowa City Hospice, Cruisers members donate food and useful products to the Iowa City Crisis Center, pathways adult daycare, and other organizations.

There are several reasons for this long commitment, according to Drapac.

“When we donate to Iowa City Hospice, we know that our funds are used locally, that the funds specifically go to patient care, and that the services are available to everyone,” he adds. “Those factors are very important to us.”

“In turn, we get very good support from Hospice,” says Drapac. “They always send a representative to our cruise-ins and we know they appreciate our efforts. Everyone at Iowa City Hospice is enjoyable to deal with.”

Slowly and surely, with its 50/50 ticket sales and other fundraisers, the Cruisers have made an impact. From 2006 through 2016, the group has donated more than $18,000 to Iowa City Hospice.

Those funds have helped Hospice continue its mission through patient-centered palliative care in its seven-county service area, regardless of an individual’s ability to pay.

“We appreciate every ounce of community support,” says Hospice Executive Director Karla Kamal, “and the Classy Chassy Cruisers have proven again and again the depth of their support.”

WaLk FOr dIGNITY The annual Walk for Dignity is held each spring on the fourth Sunday in April at 1 p.m. in Willow Creek Park. All are welcome to attend, enjoy the celebration of life and generate support for Iowa City Hospice. Many families that have been served by Iowa City Hospice form teams in memory of their loved ones. This is a wonderful way to provide critical support for patient care and bereavement services. Businesses may become Walk Sponsors.
