Europe water levels risingRIVER cruise operaons in
Europe are returning to normal
aer abnormally low levels on
the Danube forced several rms
to implement conngency plans
earlier in the month.
In recent weeks several
operators including Viking, Avalon
and Uniworld cancelled some
departures, while others have
been coaching passengers on
some segments or undertaking“ship swaps” to ensure ineraries
can connue without disrupon.
Scenic today conrmed that the
Danube is back to normal, while
the new French ineraries in
Bordeaux are sll slightly aected
“requiring some extra coaching
for short distances”.
Last week there was some
consternaon due to a cargo ship
on the Danube which became
stuck near Deggendorf and
caused the river to be closed.APT and Travelmarvel said
this aected a small number
of sailings, with passengers
transferred into the same suites
between idencal sister ships,
along with their exisng cruise
directors to ensure connuity.
“All river ships are currently
sailing as scheduled,” an APT
spokesperson told CW today.
Avalon Waterways made some
changes earlier in the month,
cancelling one departure and
compensang passengers for
missed sailing days.
Viking has cancelled or changed
several Elbe River cruises betweenPrague and Berlin, including two
set to depart this week.

“Rooiss” (pictured below) isa converted 1990 Toyota Taragovan which was constructed by

The pair achieved worldwidefame when they made their

The creators, Adam Turnbulland Dan Mellijng, were “boredwatching Top Gear and thoughtthey could do a better job”.
After the feat they auctionedthe vehicle, with a Blenheimlocal snapping it up and thendonating it to the Edwin Foxmuseum.
However the museum nowhas no space for Rooiss, withthe owner, Mark Stevenson, deciding to give it to Turnbull’smother who wants to preserve itfor posterity.
“Rooiss is typical of Kiwiingenuity...it’s a serious piece ofmaritime history,” he said.
Despite naysayers predictingthe van would sink, apparently
just ten litres of water seeped induring the Cook Strait voyage.
