HAL NOORDAM - LIBRARY & JEWELRY SHOP CONVERSION
Objective: The rebrand and expandsion of the ship’s jewelry shop. To create a high-end watch store by redesigning and interconnecting the existing library and jewelry shop into one large luxury shop.
Value engineering and creative solutions were key attributes on this project. Typical challenges included retaining as much existing outfitting as possible and managing a tight budget under $415 per sq. ft., or under $650K.
Key objectives in the new jewelry space were to create a light and clean environment to accentuate the jewelry displays, as well as allure the customer through the adjoining space. Additional objectives included tripling the capacity of linear counter displays and visually connecting the two shops.
The ship’s library was transformed into a jewelry shop. Lighter finishes were used on all the new fixed furniture to call attention to the displays while the glow of the architectural lighting helped soften the visual weight of the casework.
The existing jewelry shop was transformed into a high-end watch shop. The same mid-tone finish was used on the walls and soffits between the jewelry and watch shop tying the spaces together. Warmer tones were used on the watch shop’s new fixed furniture to create a more masculine environment. The total linear display counter space was increased by 200% with only a 60% increase of sq. ft.
Cruise Ship Interiors Awards: Entry for Best Rebrand – HAL Noordam, Library & Retail Shop Conversion
For the necessary VE efforts, all perimeter boundary outfitting was retained, and new casework was designed around this. The soffits and ceilings were renewed, and a new lighting concept was developed to align with the existing geometry, as well as recall the classic facets of gemstones.
To connect the two spaces, a hidden large FSD was added. The result was a credible, custom-designed & interconnected jewelry and watch shop with a maximized layout. Completed on budget and on time.

open-air jewelry shop with adjacent 920 sq. ft. enclosed
library to create one large interconnected wacth and
jewelry shop. Effectively value engineer the design and material usage to fall within restricted budget while achieving necessary
design intent.
ACHIVEMENT: Maximized retail display to achieve a 200% increase of linear counter space (46’ to
141’) with a 60% increase in overall sq. ft.
Met project requirments by designing modular
cabinetry to fit within exsiting fire boundry
ACHIVEMENT:Combined two spaces by
adding a large hidden B15 pocket door
CHALLENGE:Demolish library design while
