MAKING A SPLASH FOR OUR 25TH ANNIVERSARY N NEBRASKA ENVIRONMENTAL TRUST The Nebraska Envi- ronmental Trust was es- tablished in 1992 to conserve, enhance and restore the natural environ- ments of Nebraska. It was created on the conviction that a prosperous future is dependent upon a sound natural environment and that Nebraskans could collectively achieve real progress on real environmental issues if seed money were provided. Conservation of the Nebraska Sand- hills is the goal of current efforts funded by the Nebraska Environmental Trust using Lottery proceeds. Two NET grants provided to the Sandhills Task Force allowed for the completion of 14 wetland and grassland conservation projects in 2017. The 14 projects were completed on 24,600 acres of private land. The Sandhills Task Force used $64,368.80 of NET funds and leveraged an additional $391,437.58 from partners and other grants; so, for every NET dollar invested, an additional $7 was invested from other sources. Other partners include ranchers, US Fish and Wildlife Service, Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, Natural Resources Conservation Service, Rainwater Basin Joint Venture, Board of Education Lands and Funds, and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation through two grants. Eight projects were eastern red cedar clearing projects, five projects were livestock water and fencing projects, and one project was a stream restoration repair project. Cedars are encroaching across the Sandhills at an exponen- tial rate. The encroach- ment is impairing wildlife and bird habitat on the native rangeland, reducing the amount of forage available for cattle and increasing wildfire danger, so it is one of the biggest threats to the Sandhills ecosystem. Removing the cedars increases the health, vigor, and pro- ductivity of the rangeland, which is not only beneficial to ranchers, but also the wildlife, birds, insects, and pollinators that make their home on the prairie.
