Dear Family, Today we started Chapter 4 of Think Math! In this

chapter, I will work with base-ten blocks, symbols, and numbers to learn how to add and subtract. I will also work with dollars, dimes, and pennies. There are NOTES on the Lesson Activity Book pages to explain what I am learning every day.

Here are some activities for us to do together at home. These activities will help me practice adding and subtracting.

Adding Dimes and Pennies

Work with your child to practice addition using dimes and pennies.

� Gather a bunch of dimes and pennies for this activity.

� Each of you takes a handful of pennies and dimes and puts them in front of you.

� Work together to count each handful of coins and write the amounts on a sheet of paper.

� Combine the coins from both handfuls.

� Work together to find how much money there is in all. If you have 10 pennies, trade them for a dime. Try counting the dimes first and then adding the pennies. Write the total.

� Repeat with other handfuls of coins.

Cross Number PuzzlesWork with your child to complete a Cross Number Puzzle.

� A Cross Number Puzzle is like a crossword puzzle for numbers.

� Together, complete this puzzle by adding across and down. For each row, write the sum of the two numbers in the shaded box. Do the same for each column. In the green shaded box, write the sum of the rows and columns. The sum of the columns should always be the same as the sum of the rows!

Estimados familiares:Hoy empezamos el Capítulo 4 de ¡A pensar en Matemáticas! En este

capítulo, aprenderé a sumar y restar con bloques de base diez, símbolos y números. Además, trabajaré con dólares, monedas de 10¢ y monedas de 1¢. En las páginas de Actividades para las lecciones, hay NOTAS que explican lo que aprendo cada día.

Aquí hay algunas actividades para que hagamos juntos en casa. Estas actividades me ayudarán a practicar la suma y la resta.

Sumar monedas de 10¢ y 1¢

Haga esta actividad con su hijo para que practique la suma con monedas de 10¢ y 1¢.

� Para esta actividad, reúna un puñado de monedas de 10¢ y 1¢.

� Cada uno deberá tomar un puñado de monedas de 1¢ y 10¢ y ponerlas frente a sí.

� Juntos, cuenten cada puñado de monedas y anoten su valor en una hoja de papel.

� Combinen las monedas de ambos puñados.

� Juntos, hallen cuánto dinero hay en total. Si tienen 10 monedas de 1¢, cámbienlas por una moneda de 10¢. Cuenten las monedas de 10¢ primero y luego sumen las monedas de 1¢. Escriban el total.

� Repitan la actividad con distintos puñados de monedas.

Crucigramas numéricosComplete con su hijo un crucigrama numérico.

� Un crucigrama numérico es un crucigrama en el que se usan números en lugar de letras.

� Completen juntos el crucigrama sumando en sentido horizontal y vertical. Sumen los números de cada fila y escriban el total en el casillero sombreado. Hagan lo mismo con todas las columnas. En el casillero verde, escriban la suma de las filas y columnas. ¡La suma de las columnas siempre debe ser igual a la suma de las filas!
