Our Family would like to invite you to the 3rd Annual Crooked Creek Angus Produc-tion Sale. Although our name is still relatively new, our herd has been producing performance tested bulls for nearly 50 years. We pride ourselves in offering bulls and heifers with excellent growth, carcass merit, and disposition. Along with our growth and frame, 75% of the bulls offered are +6 or higher for CED.

Our Angus herd is truly a family business. You won’t come to our farm and be wowed by huge calving barns and miles of welded white fencing. What you will find is a docile, hardworking cattle herd that is able to produce bulls with many EPD’s averaging in the top 1/3 of the breed. In the last year the cattle industry saw the largest profit spreads in history. It didn’t matter if you had good or mediocre calves you were able to go to the local sale barn and make a profit. With the cattle market trying to find its settling point it’s going to be as important as ever to have good carcass merit and fast gaining calves to ensure the best profitability for you and the packers buying and tracking your calves after they leave the farm.

You’ll find added frame and growth in our Angus herd, perfect for breeding some of the breeds more moderate females. We continue to hand feed our bulls after weaning. Although labor intensive, we are able to keep from letting our bulls eat 20+lbs of feed per day. We do this to create an even playing field on WDA averages. We also feel that this adds longevity to yearling bulls who we know are about to go through the most stressful breeding season they will encounter.

We encourage you to look at our VAR Reserve 1111 calves. We may have some of largest weight and frame Reserve calves offered in the entire Angus breed this season. With our impressive cows bred to this ABS Sire belonging to one of the top herds in the country you can bet these calves are going to be ones you don’t want to miss. Their AHIR data, EPD’s, and phenotype will make them hard not to like.

EPD DEFINITIONSCalving Ease Direct (CED), is expressed as a difference in per-centage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers.

Birth Weight EPD (BW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires.

Weaning Weight EPD (WW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny com-pared to that of other sires.

Yearling Weight EPD (YW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny com-pared to that of other sires.

Docility (Doc), is expressed as a difference in yearling cattle tem-perament, with a higher value indicating more favorable docility. It predicts the average difference of progeny from a sire in com-parison with another sire’s calves. In herds where temperament problems are not an issue, this expected difference would not be realized.

Maternal Milk EPD (Milk), is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters com-pared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf’s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability.

Carcass Weight EPD (CW), expressed in pounds is a predictor of the differences in hot carcass weight of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

Marbling EPD (Marb), expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

Ribeye Area EPD (RE), expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

Fat Thickness EPD (Fat), expressed in inches, is a predictor of the differences in external fat thickness at the 12th rib (as measured between the 12th and 13th ribs) of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

Weaned Calf Value ($W), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny perfor-mance for preweaning merit. $W includes both revenue and cost adjustments associated with differences in birth weight, weaning direct growth, maternal milk and mature cow size.

Beef Value ($B), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for postweaning and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires.
