Hat Edging Attach orange yarn in any st on the bottom edge of the hat. Sc in same st and in each st

around, working evenly around each earflap. Join with a sl st to the first sc. Fasten off and weave in the end.

Ties Baby, Toddler and Child Cut 9 strands of yarn 40" long. The yarn colors can be any and all of the ones used for this project. Insert all 9 strands through the bottom center of an ear flap. Pull the strands through and bring both ends of the bundle together. You now have 18 strands. Divide the strands into three equal groups. Braid the groups leaving a 2" tassel at the end. Tie a knot above the tassel. Repeat a tie for the other earflap. Trim the tie ends to neaten.

Teen to Adult Cut 9 strands of yarn 50" long. Repeat the previous tie instructions.

Feathers (make one each of burgundy, green, gold and orange) Ch 9

Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in the next st, 1 hdc in each of the next 3 sts, 1 dc in each of the next 2 sts, 7 dc in the last st. (14 sts)

Working down the opposite side of the ch, 1 dc in each of the next 2 sts, 1 hdc in each of the next 3 sts, sc in the last 2 sts, sl st to first ch. (7 sts) Fasten off leaving a long tail.

Beak (orange) Ch 6

Row 1: Sc into 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. (5 sc)

Row 2: Ch 1, turn. Dec, sc in the next 4 sts. (4 sc) Row 3: Ch 1, turn. Dec, sc in the next 3 sts. (3 sc)

Row 4: Ch 1, turn. Sc, sc in the next 2 sts. (2 sc)

Row 5: Ch 1, turn. Sc, sc in the next st. (1 sc)

Ch 1, turn. Sc evenly around the entire beak, 2 sc in each corner. Fasten off, leaving a long tail.

Wattle: (burgundy) Ch 9

Sl st in 2nd ch from hook and in the next st, sc in each of the next 3 sts, 1 hdc in each of the next 2 sts. 7 hdc in the last st. (14 sts) Working down the opposite side of the ch, 1 hdc in each of the next 2 sts, 1 sc in each of the next 3 sts, sl st in each of the last 2 sts. Sl st to first ch. Fasten off and leave a long tail. (7 sts)

Eye Patches (Make 2-off white) Rnd 1: Form a magic ring. Ch 2 (counts as dc) 7dc into the magic circle. Join with a sl st in the beginning ch. (8 dc)

Rnd 2: Ch 2 (counts as first hdc). Hdc in base of ch 2, 2 hdc in each st around. Sl st to beginning ch. (16 hdc)

Rnd 3: Ch 1 (counts as first sc). 2 sc in next st. *sc in next, 2 sc in next.* Repeat from * to * around. Sl st to beginning ch. (24 sc)

Fasten off and leave a long tail.

Finishing Step 1: Using the photo as a guide, arrange and pin the eye patches, beak and wattle to the hat. Using the yarn tails and yarn needle, sew the features to the hat. Note: No matter which size, attach the eye patches 1 1/2" from the bottom edge of the hat and the beak 3/4" from the edge.

Step 2: Using black thread and a sewing needle, stitch two 3/8" flat black buttons to the patches, just above the beak and spaced approximately 1/2" apart.

Step 3: Place the feathers side-by-side on your work surface. Using the yarn tails on each feather and a yarn needle, stitch the feathers together along the 1st four sts on the bottom-side edges.

Step 4: Pin the feathers to the back of the hat, just above the last increase row. Note: This row will be different for each hat size. Thread light brown in the yarn needle and sew the bottom edge of the feathers to the hat.
