JoiningThe motifs and filler squares of this afghan are sewn together with the same yarn using a running stitch through the back loop only (when the front of the afghan is facing you) of the stitches. Since you will be sewing with the back side facing you, your sewing stitches should be through the front loops of the crochet stitches on the back side. Holding right sides to-

gether, sew motifs together along one side through 14 stitches (the center trc of one corner of the motif to, and including, the center trc of the next corner of the motif.) Since you will be sewing with the back side facing you, your sewing stitches should be through the front loops of the crochet stitches on the back side. Sew 8 motifs together in this manner to form the first motif row of the length of the afghan. (Sew together 8 more motifs) 5 times to form the additional 5 rows of the length of the afghan. Sew the 6 rows of motifs together to form the 6-motif width of the afghan. Sew the 35 filler squares into the 35 empty spaces between motifs to complete the body of the afghan.

EdgingAttach yarn with a sl st in any stitch on the perimeter of the afghan, (ch 1 tightly, sl st in the next st) around the perimeter of the afghan, ch 1; join with a sl st in the first sl st. Fasten off. Weave in ends.

Begin joining the second octagon to the first octagon. On the second octagon, sc in the same st as joining (ch 3, skip next st, sc in the next st) across until you complete a sc in the next cor-ner st, ch 2, remove hook from st.

Step 3

Insert hook from the top into a ch-3 space to the left of a cor-ner on the first octagon and re-hook the dropped st on the sec-

ond octagon and pull up through the ch-3 space on the first oc-tagon.

Step 4

Ch 1, skip next st on the second octagon, sc in the next st on the second octagon.

Continue joining octagons together to form the first row of octagons. To do this, counting counterclockwise, skip the next three sides of of the last octagon and begin joining the next oc-tagon in the ch-3 sp on the far right side of the fourth side of the last octagon. Join next octagon to the last octagon by re-

peating steps 2 through 8. Join as many octagons as indicated in the pattern to complete the first row of octagons.

(Note: this joining will leave an empty dia-mond between four octagons. This is where the filler squares will be added.) After joining the new octagon, continue around the new octagon working (ch 3, skip next st, sc in the next st) until you reach the first sc on the new octagon, ch 3; join with a sl st in the first sc. Fasten off. Continue joining octagons this way until all octagons are joined.

(84 dc & 6 fptrc & 6 ch-2 sps) Fasten off.

Joining The motifs of this afghan are sewn together with the same yarn using a running stitch. With the backs of the motifs fac-ing you, sew together the sides as shown in the illustration through the front loops only (this would be through the back loops only when the front side of the afghan is facing you.) One side = a ch st, 14 dc, a fptrc, and a ch st, for a total of 17 sts on each of the six sides of the motif. Begin with a center

hexagon motif and sew a hexagon motif to each of the six sides of the center hexagon for a total of seven hexagons. Sew the sides of these six motifs together. Then sew 2 hexagon mo-tifs to each of the outer six hexagon motifs. Sew the sides of these 12 motifs together. These additional 12 motifs bring the total number of hexagon motifs to 19. This completes the baby size afghan.

For a full size afghan, sew another 18 motifs to the outer pe-rimeter of the last 12 motifs for a total of 37 motifs. Then sew an additional 24 motifs to the outer perimeter of the last 18 motifs for a total of 61 motifs. This completes the joining for a full size afghan.

EdgingRound 1: Attach yarn with a sl st in an unworked ch-2 sp of any corner, ch 3 to count as the first dc and the first ch 1. Counting the ch-2 sps as one st, (skip next st, dc, in the next st, ch 1) around the perimeter of the afghan until you reach a seam, where you will dc in each ch-2 sp on either side of the seam without placing a ch 1 between them. Continue in this manner around the entire perimeter of the afghan, then join with a sl st in the 3rd ch of the beginning ch 4.

Round 2: Ch 3 to count as the first dc, dc in each ch-1 sp and in each dc until you reach the 2 dc on either side of a seam. Dc dec in these 2 dc. Continue in this manner around the entire perimeter of the afghan; join with a sl st in the top of the begin-ning ch 3.
