clUb NeWs The Boys & Girls Club of Montevallo is off to a great start, with lots of people to thank already! Members of the Mu Mu chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority came to spend an afternoon with us and brought a picnic table to help us create an outdoor program space which we hope will include four more tables. As part of ‘World Wide Day of Play’ with Nickelodeon and Boys & Girls Clubs of America, we turned off all electronics and went outside for an afternoon of old fashioned fun with the members of UM’s Upward Bound program. To give back to the community, members made flowers for the Senior Center, wrote and decorated inspirational notes to be included in packets for cancer survivors and raised the flag for two home football games for the MHS Bulldogs. On Sept. 16, they raised the flag in honor of our local first responders who protect and serve us all each and every day! Perhaps the highlight of the month was the world-wide debut of our new choir. Called the ‘One Day Voices’ (from Dr. King’s I Have a Dream’ speech), they sang at the community communion service at Shiloh Church. Sporting the new t-shirts (Thanks Billy Perry!) designed by the kids, the group sang “Let There Be Peace on Earth”. We are already looking ahead to some big events in October including an Open House in Honor of the Afterschool Alliance’s ‘Lights on After School’ celebration. Club members will be inviting friends and other members of the community to visit the Club from 3:30 to 6 on Oct 20. Next month, the University of Montevallo Track team will be coming to help us with our National Fitness Competition. Members will participate in 10 different activities and their scores will be noted. Next spring the team will come back for another competition and we’ll be excited to see how many members improve their scores in these events. Oct 10 is a school holiday so we can be open from 7am to 6pm to kids (members and non-members) who need somewhere safe and fun to go that day. The fee is $10 for the day and kids will need to bring a lunch and snack. We need to have 20 kids registered and paid by October 3 in order to be open. With questions about any of this or to volunteer your time, talent or to make a donation, call 665-4466.

TeeN ceNTer NeWs There are now up to 60 registered members and many unique programs to get involved in. This summer, some teens had the opportunity to go to Old Navy to get to experience working in a retail environment. Teens ran the registers, took care of customers, and dressed mannequins. We had our first #WeOwnFriday event for the semester on Sept 9th when the Teen Center stayed open late! Members enjoyed video games, pizza, chips and dip, and more! On Sept 16th, we celebrated the Worldwide Day of Play—with activities ranging from flag football to our very own game of “Paintball” using water balloons with food coloring in them. Our members are very ambitious! One member is starting a Debate Team at the Teen Center and another is starting a Robotics Club! We are also starting new pilot programs such as Lyricism 101, which covers the history of hip hop and learning how to write confidently, and a brand new simulation program that helps members make choices to determine what they will do after high school and make wise financial decisions. This year, our goal at the Teen Center is to help members establish a plan for after High School graduation. The Teen Center was a recipient of the Taco BellFoundation grant, which helps more than half a million teenagers on their path to graduation. We are excited to celebrate our oldest members and other teens in the community for their choices to stay in school and have a plan! The Teen Center is always ready to accept new members! Your teen can get involved in all of these exceptional programs for only $50 per semester! Payment plans are available. If you would like to volunteer, donate, or register a teen, please call 626.8222 or email [email protected].

The Montevallo Junior City Council has partnered with Main Street Businesses, the Montevallo Chamber and Montevallo High School to encourage after-school traffic in Main Street businesses by providing a two-hour discount period for students. Each student will receive a card that will allow them to participate in business-set promotions on school days from 3-5. Their goals are to increase student use of local businesses and to bring money and traffic into local businesses during the post-lunch slow period. Participating businesses would feature a Refresh! Decal that would allow students to know where promotions and deals are available. Promotions may include 10-15% off discounts, deals on specific items, buy-one-get-one sales, or other promotions or discounts specified by businesses.

CITY OF MONTEVALLO NEWSMayor’s Message... October: Events galore and a hearty congratulations! October perpetually brings about an air of excitement in Montevallo. Not only is football in full swing, but the weather begins to cool and fabulous community events peek around every corner. October 2016 is no exception. The city kicks off off the month with UM Theatre production, DNA October 1st and 2nd at Reynold’s Hall. The excitement continues throughout the month. Below is just a snapshot of the many opportunities for gathering with friends and loved ones in the upcoming weeks. • Tuesday, October 4th, National Night Out, Lucky’s Foodland parking lot • Thursday, October 13th, UM Founder’s day and Life Raft Debate • Friday, October 14th, Mayor’s Hometown Heroes Breakfast • Saturday, October 15th Fire Prevention Parade, followed by fire prevention events at Orr Park• Friday, October 21st, MES Parenting Day• Saturday, October 29th Annual ArtStalk, • Monday, October 31st, Hometown Halloween, Trick-or-treat on Main Street And of course a myriad of local sporting events at all levels throughout the month! Since the city is a primary host for two of these events I extend a special invitation to you all to attend the National Night Out October 4th and the Hometown Heroes Breakfast October 14th. Police Captain Tim Alexander has organized the 2016 National Night Out, which is a national event to increase awareness about police programs in our communities. This promises to be an incredibly fun-filled FREE event for the whole community with food, entertainment and children’s activities. We are sincerely appreciative to Captain Alexander for his leadership, Lucky’s Foodland for the prominent role they play in supporting this event as well Piggly Wiggly and others for their donations. The Mayor’s Hometown Heroes breakfast is an incredibly meaningful event that was started by my friend and predecessor former Mayor Ben McCrory. It has served as an elegant morning to remember for many years now. This is the single event in town in which we can honor these hometown heroes who have contributed to our community and in many cases, the world! Past heroes include a NASA administrator, first responders, war heroes and remarkable youth. Purchase your tickets for $15 at city hall or the Chamber of Commerce to meet and support this year’s recipients. As your mayor I urge you to participate in our community events; show your support of the arts, athletics, academics and your community with your time, presence and energy! We are incredibly fortunate to live in such a beautiful community with a rich history, so many special events, and a wealth of amazing individuals, all encompassed in such an enchanting natural environment. Thank you for the opportunity to serve another four years as your mayor. It is an honor and a privilege that I do not take lightly. Please join me in congratulating our new council members: Ms. Tiffany Bunt and Mr. Matt Walker as well as thanking Ms. Sharon gilbert and Ms. Dee Woodham for their

many years of service on the council. I also extend deep gratitude to Dr. Earl Cunningham, Mr. Bill glosson and Mr. Lee Waites for running for mayor and council positions. I am looking forward to working with all of these fine individuals for years to come in different capacities.

Hollie C. Cost, Mayor
