Critical review - Strengths

A good understanding of what makes an interior space and what it can achieve.

• Internal, external and human factors that effect space, from physical forms such as materials and surroundings as well as more psychological factors such as perception, association, social convention and cultural memory.

• How perceptions and responses of a space can be augmented to achieve more specific objectives i.e to create understanding within an exhibition, a desired behavior in a formal space or brand identity in retail.

Attitude to work

Year 1: I felt very motivated in learning new disciplines and expanding creative knowledge in design theory & convention as well as using this in smaller projects.

Year 2: I found learning technical skills and applying them to larger projects whilst retaining creativity a steep learning curve, both in terms of learning alongside work production and time management.

Positives • Went through a valuable process that will make

me a better designer by learning from my errors

• Learnt skills that will be useful tools as well as improving my employability.

Negatives• Felt distracted from producing creative design

and presentation of work that would have communicated my designs better.

Change in understanding of the potential of interiors

BEFORE: A limited idea of how interior design can enrich our lives. Mainly through a perception of ‘luxury’ gained by furnishings of comfort and decoration.

Hard & soft skills to develop

Hard skills Soft skills

AutoCAD. To become faster at production and be able to create more professional 3d images and plan representations.

Photoshop. To increase use to create professional visualisations both in conjunction with AutoCAD and hand drawings.

Model Making By becoming more confident in using the workshop and using a wider range of materials and techniques to make more communicative models.

DEFINITIONS

HARD skills refer to pragmatic disciplinary learning that tend to be either technical or administrative procedures. Unlike soft skills, they are specific to a predetermined outcome.

SOFT skills are less quantifiable understandings that have a more general application which assists an outcome rather than produces it. They tend to be more sociological in that they often require a degree of emotional as well ongoing theoretical understandings.

Creativity by allowing more time and thought to concept stages and communicating my work using a combination of skills that will give more intrigue as well as understanding.

Confidence in communication of my work progression and learning new skills even if it means having to show early progression to my piers!

Time management through better organisation; not underestimating completion times and allowing contingencies to limit risk.

Fundamentally allows you to generate a good design without which hard skills would be useless

Design concep

Conventional processes that allow cross discipline and inter-team communication which is vital for a ‘real life’ projects.

Responsibility of development

My development is my own responsibility. It’s the university’s responsibility to enable me to do so by providing appropriate information, tools and support.

Have a deeper knowledge of interior design theory and practice and the means to further it.

Have a clear view of my goals and what I need to do to achieve them.

I am more aware as to how to limit risk. I have learnt from mistakes since!

Since starting the course I now…

View each unit as a whole from the beginning rather than getting bogged down with singular tasks and details that made my work too thin towards the end.

Reduced risk by being more tactful in using skills I’m still learning.

Concentrate on my own progression and how best ‘I’ work rather than trying to be conventional.

What I would have done differently…

What I hope to achieve

How

• Prioritise improving organisation and time management in order to maximize and vary my skill development as well as meeting all requirements for each unit.

• Allow more time to concentrate on producing quality design visualisations that can be used in my portfolio.
