Critically ill patients, particularly those on mechanical ventilation, are at high risk from nosocomial infections such as Ventilator Associated Pneumonia and have significantly longer ICU stay lengths.

However, the incidence of VAP can be reduced and several measures have been identified as being effective, including:

• Early and accurate diagnosis (*1 *2)

• Routine oral care/hygiene (*2 *3)

• Suctioning with closed catheters (*4)

• Early extubation (*5)
