WASHINGTON (CNS)With differ- ent political philosophies, Republican President George W. Bush and Democratic rival Sen. John F. Kerry are far apart on how they would structure taxes and the federal budget to help shape the U.S. economy for the next four years. How well or poorly either candidates plans and programs would mesh with principles for economic justice outlined by Catholic social teaching is another matter. In todays complex, increasingly glob- alized economy, there is no simple way to translate norms of social justice and equity into U.S. public policy decisions. Too much depends on the practical out- come of the policies, on which there is wide disagreement. Last September the Administrative Committee of the U.S. bishops issued a 21-page statement, Faithful Citizenship: A Catholic Call to Political Responsi- bility. A relatively small portion of that state- ment addressed tax, budgetary and eco- nomic policy issues directly, although what the bishops said on a wide range of other issues had budget-related policy implications. A relatively small portion of that state-ment addressed tax, budgetary and eco-nomic policy issues directly, althoughwhat the bishops said on a wide range ofother issues had budget-related policyimplications.

In their most direct statement on theeconomy and government policy, the bish-ops said:

data on sex abuse allegations during the1950-2002 period.

The John Jay study released inFebruary said that dioceses and eparchiesreceived credible allegations of abuseagainst 4,392 clergymen�almost allpriests�involving 10,667 minors duringthe period.

Regarding possible noncompliancedata, a child and youth protection officefact sheet on the audits said that peoplewith information that �indicates that aparticular article, or articles, of the charter

human person. We support policies thatcreate jobs for all who can work withdecent working conditions and adequatepay that reflects a living wage. We alsosupport efforts to overcome barriers toequal pay and employment for womenand those facing unjust discrimination.

�We reaffirm the Church�s traditionalsupport of the right of workers to choose toorganize, join a union, bargain collectively,and exercise these rights without reprisal.We also affirm the Church�s teaching onthe importance of economic freedom, ini-tiative and the right to private property,through which we have the tools andresources to pursue the common good.�

On the domestic front, Bush recentlycredited his administration�s tax cuts withspurring economic recovery and said, �Tosustain this economic growth, we need tokeep taxes low. Higher taxes right nowwould undermine growth and destroyjobs. ... We need to make the tax reliefpermanent.�

Noting that most of the Bush tax cutsbenefited people in the highest incomebrackets, Kerry recently said, �I�m fight-ing to roll back George Bush�s unafford-able tax cut for the wealthy and invest itin health care, education, job creation andto build America again.�

A little more than 9 percent of the Bushtax reduction package went to the three-fifths of American households earning$53,000 or less. Almost 14 percent wentto those in the next fifth, earning up to$84,000, and 77 percent went to the one-fifth of households with incomes above$84,000.

The administration argues that the taxcut was necessary to spur growth andrestore the nation�s economic health; theKerry campaign says the cut contributedto record deficits that endanger theU.S. economy. According to White Houseprojections, the deficit for the fiscal yearending on Sept. 30 will be a record$445 billion, well above last year�s$375 billion deficit but below earlierprojections of more than half a trilliondollars.

The Bush campaign literature focuseson making the administration�s tax cutspermanent. Kerry says he would roll backthe tax cuts for the wealthy, increase thechild care tax credit and middle-class tax

Bush and Kerry both claim their planswill cut the federal deficit in half�Bushin five years, Kerry in four.

This summer, Republicans in Congressbegan floating the idea of a national salestax, prompting Bush at an Aug. 10 cam-paign event to say that, while he had noidea how large a national sales tax wouldhave to be, �it�s the kind of interestingidea we ought to explore seriously.�

Kerry said such a tax would have to beas large as 30 percent and would hurtsmall businesses and middle-class familiesthe most.

Kerry proposes raising the U.S. mini-mum wage from the $5.15 per hour set in1997 to $7 per hour. Under a �minimumwage increase� heading, the Bush cam-paign Web site stresses the number ofnew jobs created in the past year and theneed for �policies that will keep theeconomy growing��language tradition-ally used by opponents of a higher mini-mum wage�but adds that the adminis-tration �will continue to work withCongress to study the various minimumwage proposals.�

Bush and Kerry disagree sharply on themeaning, impact and number of new jobsgenerated in the United States since lastAugust. The Kerry campaign claims thatmost of the new jobs are in fields of workwhere wages are below the national aver-age, while the Bush campaign argues thatmost of them are in higher-paying fieldsof work.

Kerry says a Democratic administrationwill create 10 million new jobs in thecountry. His �Jobs First Tax Cut Strategy�includes closing loopholes that providetax breaks to companies that move jobsoverseas; giving a tax credit to small com-panies for each new employee hired; elim-inating capital gains taxes for those whoinvest in small businesses; and givingsmall employers a tax break of up to50 percent on the cost of covering healthinsurance for workers.

On the U.S. role in the global economyand the development of heavily indebtedand underdeveloped nations, �FaithfulCitizenship� said, �As a wealthy and pow-erful nation, the United States has thecapacity and responsibility to address[the] scandal of poverty and underdevel-opment.�

�The United States,� the bishops added,

�should take a leading role in helping toalleviate global poverty through a compre-hensive development agenda, includingsubstantially increased development aidfor the poorest countries, more equitabletrade policies and continuing efforts torelieve the crushing burdens of debt anddisease.�

The Bush administration has continuedthe process begun under President BillClinton to fund significant debt forgive-ness in poor countries facing massiveexternal debt.

Bush also launched a three-year$15 billion Millennium ChallengeAccount to improve living conditions inpoor countries and launched a five-year$15 billion commitment of U.S. aid tofight disease abroad, especially the spreadof HIV and AIDS in Africa and Asia.

The Kerry campaign calls for morereliance on inexpensive generic drugs tofight AIDS globally, a more collaborativemultilateral approach than the largelybilateral aid approach of the Bush admin-istration, and raising U.S. anti-AIDS fund-ing to $30 billion by 2008.

Kerry also calls for �deeper andbroader debt cancellation� for heavilyindebted poor countries. �

St. Vincent Indianapolis Hospital dedicates new breast care centerBy Mary Ann Wyand

St. Vincent Indianapolis Hospital officials dedicated thenew St. Vincent Breast Center on Aug. 13 and rededicatedtheir efforts to provide early detection, diagnosis, treatmentand support for patients with breast cancer.

National statistics indicate that about one in eightwomen are diagnosed with breast cancer and men accountfor about 1 percent of all cases.

Physicians, staff members, volunteers and guests joinedhospital officials for the ribbon-cutting ceremony, whichincluded the release of three doves in front of the 45,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art medical facility at thecorner of Naab Road and West 86th Street adjacent to themain hospital campus.

Hospital officials said the new building at 8550 NaabRoad integrates the latest breast cancer diagnostic technol-ogy with St. Vincent�s �Spirit of Caring,� symbolized bythe hospital�s logo featuring three doves, in what is thelargest multidisciplinary breast center in the state.

Dr. Patricia Maryland, president of St. Vincent Hospitalsand Health Services in Indianapolis, said creating a centerdedicated to breast care offers patients new beginnings andrenewed hope for the future.

�Cancer does not have to be a diagnosis of death,�Maryland said, because early screening, intervention andtreatment can make a huge difference in clinical outcomesand survival rates for patients.

�Having the best of technology to support that [earlyintervention] truly can help us move toward a very positiveoutcome� for breast cancer patients, she said. �I believe thatSt. Vincent Health is special because we not only take careof the patient�s needs from a physical standpoint and a men-tal standpoint, but � how we integrate the spiritual compo-nents, understanding the emotional and spiritual needs ofour patients, is a big part of that care process.�

Dr. R. Thomas Schmidt, a surgical breast oncologist andmedical director of the St. Vincent Breast Program, said thecenter�s multidisciplinary approach will increase the sur-vival rate of breast cancer patients, but emphasized that cre-ating awareness about warning signs and the importance ofmammograms are the keys to preventing this type of cancerin both women and men.

�We�re very proud to have a state-of-the-art facility,�

Schmidt said, �and we have a very dedicated and caringstaff of people that are committed to the work. We wantpeople to get mammograms so we can save lives.�

Dedication of the specialty center �makes us pause torealize that breast cancer continues to be a huge problem, ahuge issue,� he said, �and despite all the advances thatwe�ve made, early detection is the primary way that we willimpact survival. We all need to continue to create aware-ness throughout the community. Without question, that�s themost important thing we can do. � We all need to � gohome and ask our neighbors, ask our friends, if they havehad a mammogram. It�s a simple little thing.�

If everyone would promote the importance of breastmammography, he said, that life-saving message wouldreach countless people and help save lives.

Schmidt cited a recent study indicating that only a verylow percentage of women who should get mammogramsactually do arrange to have the annual radiological exami-nation.

�The St. Vincent Breast Center is about awareness,� hesaid, and hopefully women driving on West 86th Street willnotice the sign on the building and remember to visit a doc-tor and schedule a mammogram.

St. Vincent�s new center is �a unique combination ofChurch and medical practice,� Schmidt said. �We�re all try-ing to help make a really, really, really bad disease better.What we really want to celebrate is [the day] that there isno more breast cancer. That would be a celebration.�

Daughter of Charity Sister Sharon Richardt, chief mis-sion officer of St. Vincent Health in Indianapolis, said thebreast center dedication is an opportunity to remember thefirst four Daughters of Charity, who came to Indianapolis in1879 with only $34.77 and transformed an unused seminaryinto a hospital.

Sister Sharon said �this bit of history reminds us all ofhow blessed we are to continue to have so many partner-ships with physicians and those who share our passion forthe mission, vision and core values that have distinguished

St. Vincent�s for almost 125 years now.�Dr. Lori Wells, a radiologist and medical director of the

St. Vincent Breast Center, said the new facility includesthree full-field digital mammography units linked to com-puters for enhanced detection and diagnosis.

Medical specialists associated with the new center offermedical and surgical oncology, radiation oncology, internalmedicine, nuclear medicine, laboratory services, plasticsurgery, emotional counseling, social and financial services,and rehabilitation care in one location.

Technology includes analog and digital mammography,stereotactic biopsy, ultrasound diagnostic imaging and ultra-sound-guided biopsy with �second look� computer-aidedscreening.

St. Vincent officials said breast care specialists and tech-nicians perform more than 2,000 mammograms monthly aswell as more breast care procedures annually than any otherfacility of its kind in the state.

Julie Howerton, a nurse practitioner and director of theSt. Vincent Breast Center, said the St. Vincent MobileMammography Unit has been very successful as an out-reach tool for screening and early detection for years.

She said St. Vincent Indianapolis Hospital recentlyreceived a grant from the Susan G. Komen Breast CancerFoundation to fund a Hispanic bilingual assistant for themobile mammography unit.

�In a lot of the areas where we�re going, there is a largepercentage of Hispanics in the population,� Howerton said.�We now have a translator for those patients whose culturemay be a barrier to them receiving a mammogram. Seventy-one years ago when I wasbaptized in the Catholic Church, theUnited States was just coming out of aserious depression, the war in Europewas soon to involve the United Statesand my darling Irish mother was strug-gling as a single parent to keep a hometogether for my older sister and myself.

By her wonderful example as adevout Catholic mother, she taught melessons I still live by today as a wife of46 years, mother to five, grandmother tofour and a registered voting Democrat.

Since Pope John Paul II, the arch-bishop and my pastor have not told mewho I must vote for, I strongly believe itis not the role of my fellow RepublicanCatholics to insist I am not �true to myfaith� if I do not vote Republican.

Because of my mother�s deep faithand the Sisters of Providence teachings,there is no possibility that I would everleave my Catholic religion, but I musttell you that it is becoming harder andharder to feel welcome by some in theChurch.

Pope John Paul II writes inChristifideles Laici: �A new state ofaffairs today both in the Church and insocial, economic, political and culturallife, calls with a particular urgency forthe action of the lay faithful. If lack ofcommitment is always unacceptable, thepresent time renders it even more so. Itis not permissible for anyone to remainidle.�

Many of our legislators, judges, newsmedia, advertisers and entertainers havesupported anti-life efforts. With theirvery visible dais, weight and secularimportance, those forces have ledsome Catholics to agree against theChurch because it �feels right� whetherDemocrat or Republican.

Most U. S. Catholics are Democraticparty members. That in itself is not bad,but to my knowledge they have not triedto make their party change its platformto become pro-life. Apparently, thegreater number of members don�t thinkthat they should.

Our Church is misunderstood bymany Catholics. They don�t seem tohave read Scripture or been taught indepth about Jesus giving it the deposit offaith, and that he gave it utmost author-ity on earth in teaching faith and morals.

�He that hears you hears me; and hethat despises you despises me; and hethat despises me despises him that sentme� (Lk 10:16).

This election will be the last goodchance for many years to undo what the

Response to woman’svoting dilemma

In a recent letter to the editor, anIndianapolis woman expressed herdilemma over who to vote for thisNovember. She says that althoughPresident George W. Bush is anti-abor-tion, he has not demonstrated a pro-lifeposition on issues of war in Iraq, socialprograms and capital punishment.

I just feel compelled to say that noneof those issues compares with the horrorof abortion�the gruesome murder ofone-fourth of all babies conceived inthis country�the most innocent amongus.

The reality of legalized infanticide,while cloaked in the euphemisms of�choice,� �it�s just fetal tissue� and�women�s (not babies�) rights,� is with-out a doubt the most barbaric practiceinstituted in the United States today.

And, the consequences of our coun-try�s acceptance of and complacencyabout such a fundamentally evil proce-dure are far-reaching and long-lasting,not just for those precious babies, butalso for their mothers and society.

Testimonies of women who feel theirbaby�s first kicks as they fight for theirlives during saline-induced abortions, orsuffer excruciating grief over the deathof their aborted babies, often years later,are heart-wrenching.

Voting for a president who supportsany measure to end this practice�evenat the expense of our economy, foreignpolicies or social issues�while votingagainst a candidate who endorses eventhe most hideous attack on life, partial-birth abortion�is an absolute duty ofany pro-life Christian.

While every life is precious and God-given, and I would never choose one lifeover another, the number of lives lost inthe war in Iraq, an estimated 11,000(including civilians and military person-nel), is nowhere near the more than44 million lives lost in abortion since itwas legalized in 1973.

Likewise, I believe capital punish-ment, reserved for those found guilty ina court of law of only the most heinousof crimes, is not at all comparable to theabortion of innocent babies, whose only�crime� is to be an inconvenient conse-quence of willing sexual activity bytheir mothers. (Rape constitutes lessthan 1 percent of all abortions.)

I�m not condemning women who�vehad abortions. I know most of themundergo the procedure out of despera-tion, not fully understanding the realityof the precious baby that lives withinthem. And, a majority of them are phys-ically and emotionally scarred for lifeby their �choice� to sever their babiesfrom their wombs and those preciousGod-given bonds of motherhood�hisgreatest blessing to women.

As Christians, we must respond tothese women with love and mercy. But,as pro-life supporters, we must also dowhatever we can in the voting booth tohelp end abortion. I don�t think anyother current �issue� can override inimportance the life of even one helplessinfant painfully ripped from the warmthand safety of its mother�s womb justbecause it is �inconvenient� or�unwanted.�

Please vote in November for the can-didate who stands on the side of thesmallest, most helpless, most innocentof our citizens, whose voices we neverhear, except in the silent recesses of ourhearts.Lori Burkhart, Lawrenceburg

Britain prides itself on being a secu-lar, rather than a religious, society.

There is seldom a religious motive forthe decisions its government makes.An example of that, as we reported inour July 30 issue, is the announcementmade by Britain�s Human Fertilizationand Embryology Authority that itwould allow the screening of humanembryos so that prospective parentscan pick and choose which embryoswill be implanted and allowed to beborn in order to help a seriously ill sib-ling. In order words, it will allow thecreation of so-called �designer babies.�

Since Britain is such a secular soci-ety, it makes another development inEngland that much more interesting. Itall started with a new book by a gyne-cologist, Dr. Stuart Campbell. Thebook, titled Watch Me Grow!(St. Martin�s Press, $24.95), showsphotographs of fetuses in the wombduring various stages of their growth.The photographs were produced by thenew 3D ultrasound scanning.

The editors of a London daily news-paper were so taken by the pho-tographs that they published, on thefront page, a series of the photographsof a 12-week-old fetus stretching andkicking in the womb. Inside pages fea-tured a double spread of a large rangeof the photos. Naturally, the photosshowed quite clearly that this was ababy in the mother�s womb.

As a result of those photos, there isnow a demand that England�s abortionlaws be changed. The law now allowsabortions up to 24 weeks of gestation,and England�s lawmakers now want tolower that.

As part of the campaign for lower-ing the age limit, London�s SundayTelegraph published an article with theheadline, �This 2-year-old is the reasonwhy the abortion law will change.� Itshowed a photo of a healthy little girlwho was born at just 23 weeks of ges-tation. The little girl could have beenaborted legally, just as she could havebeen here in the United States.

How low the age might be loweredis now being debated. England�sHealth Secretary, John Reid, is advo-cating a reduction in the time limit to18 weeks while other politicians are

lobbying for 12 weeks. Dr. Campbell was interviewed for an

article in the Catholic periodical TheTablet. As also reported in the Aug. 1issue of the U.S. national Catholicnewspaper Our Sunday Visitor, he isquoted as saying, �When you see theseimages, you realize that between 18 and24 weeks the baby is so advanced neu-rologically, at such an advanced stage ofdevelopment, that abortion at 24 weeksis just unacceptable.

�Even a fetus lying there deaddoesn�t convey the horror that oneexperiences seeing a baby moving itsarms and legs, opening its mouth,sucking its thumb. Then you think�gosh!�somebody wants to�youknow.� (Apparently he couldn�t bringhimself to say the word �kill.�)

Campbell continued, �I believe theabortion limit should be cut to20 weeks immediately, and then wecould work toward bringing it down to16 weeks. If the limit was cut to20 weeks, that would at least make ussemi-civilized.�

It should go without saying that wewould like to see all abortion elimi-nated, from the moment of conceptiononward. At the moment, though, bothin England and in the United States,that doesn�t appear to be possible.

That�s when the advice of PopeJohn Paul II comes into play. In hisencyclical Evangelium Vitae (�TheGospel of Life�), he wrote: �TheChurch encourages political leaders,starting with those who are Christians,not to give in, but to make thosechoices which, taking into accountwhat is realistically attainable, willlead to the reestablishment of a justorder in the defense and promotion ofthe value of life� (#90).

When even a partial-birth abortionban is now being contested inU.S. courts, it�s difficult to see how wecould currently get legislation thatwould ban abortion even after24 weeks of gestation. But we are con-vinced that we could lower the numberof abortions if pregnant women wouldtake advantage of technology such asthose ultrasound scans. When they seethem, it�s difficult for them not tothink, �That�s a baby in there!�

The story is told that at dinner oneevening, Cardinal Angelo Roncalli(later to become Pope John XXIII)

listened to his priest-secretary�s reportabout a fellow priest whose behavior wasthe source of scandal in the local commu-nity.

The secretary questioned the cardinalas to why he was willing to tolerate such apriest.

The cardinal remained silent for sometime, all the while examining the winegoblet he held in his hand. Finally, heasked the priest-secretary, �Whose glass isthis?�

Surprised by the question, the priestresponded, �It is yours, Your Eminence.�

Without saying another word, CardinalRoncalli threw the glass to the floor,where it shattered into hundreds of pieces.

�And whose glass is it now, Father?�he asked.

The priest was quiet for a moment andthen replied, �It is still yours, YourEminence.�

Then it was the cardinal�s turn to ask afinal question, �Is the priest you asked meabout any less my brother because he isshattered and broken than this wine gobletis still mine even though it is now brokeninto many pieces?�

The question contains its own answer.The last two years, the news media

have given extraordinary attention to thepublic and private sins of Catholic priests.

Certainly, there are wrongs to be correctedand actions to be made transparent. As amatter of fact, Church leaders of all faithsconfront clergy problems, and we arelearning how to deal more effectively withthe need for purification and also the sad-ness of public scandal. We are learning todeal with public and private sins in publicand in the media.

As we scrupulously address sex abuseby Catholic priests, the attendant publicityhas caused me to do much thinking aboutChurch-media relations. A few years ago,a bishop-friend put his thoughts on thesubject to paper. Some of his thoughtsspeak my mind.

Matters of religion�Catholic doctrinesin this case�seem foreign to some medialeaders and reporters. Rarely do serioussubjects of faith receive media attention,except when conflict, controversy or scan-dal arise. It is �religion as sound bite.�

We, the public, are not free of responsi-bility for the voyeuristic tenor of muchthat appears in print and on television: thesinful side of life, tales of broken promisesand the sad debris left in their wake. It is�life as soap-opera.�

Sinful clergy and other public sinnersare treated as objects of fascination, not aspersons. Forgiveness seems to be off theradar screen. Are we responsible for thisdevelopment in our culture?

Sometimes we live itwell, sometimes badly. Yet what sustainsour calling, despite the poor mess wemake of things at times, is a belief thatGod does not treat any human person as anobject.

�Let there be no mistake,� BishopSartain continues, �God is not soft on evil,nor should we be. But neither does Goddistance Himself from us, alienate Himselffrom us, or make us subjects of his enter-tainment. God loves us, saints and sinnersalike. Our stumblings elicit His compas-sion and His ire; but He who created usknows we are capable of better, and Henever tires showing us how. There is noth-ing more purifying than the wrath of God�s

There is much in religion that is news-worthy, and not all news about religion iscomfortable to the believer. Yet, whateverthe news about their faith, believersdeserve a serious account of issues�notsensational accounts sought from question-able sources in order to introduce conflictand controversy.

The broken sinners are family, too. �

Sidewalk counselors at abortion clinicshave a challenging job. The women theytry to serve often ignore them.

But now the men and women who seekto help those who come to the PlannedParenthood clinic at 5430 E. 21st St. inIndianapolis have a tool in their pro-lifework that will be difficult to look past.

A large sign designed to attract theattention of the clinic�s clients was recentlypainted on the wall of a commercial build-ing perpendicular to the clinic. It faces theclinic and its parking lot.

The sign�s message does not condemnthe women who have come there. Instead,it offers them help. It shows a hand hold-ing a heart. Next to the hand is the mes-sage: �There is a better choice. For realhelp, call 1-877-734-2444.�

This is the telephone number of theGabriel Project, a network of pro-life peo-ple who give help and support to womenwho are experiencing crisis pregnancies.

The sign also has a short message forthose who speak only Spanish: �Llamanos[�You may call us at�]1-800-720-4570.�This is the telephone number for theGabriel Project�s Spanish line.

Maureen McHugh, a member ofSt. Matthew Parish in Indianapolis, spear-headed the effort to have this sign painted.She has often served as a sidewalk coun-selor outside the clinic.

But McHugh does not take any creditfor the sign. She looks to God in thatregard.

�It came about in prayer,� she said. �Ifelt called that it would be a good idea toput a pro-life message up there.�

McHugh�s sidewalk counseling and herefforts to paint the sign have been done incoordination with Truth and CompassionMinistries, a small ecumenical pro-lifeassociation in central Indiana that arranges

�I feel they are really important, just toshake people out of their apathy,�Hanagan said. �Too often, people justignore us. They don�t think about it. Ithink that they don�t really realize whatthey�re doing. So the idea of the signs isto wake them up.�

But more than simply raising theirawareness, Hanagan also explained that thenew sign can express the ultimate purposefor his and other counselors� presencethere: to offer help.

�The first message is that we�re here tohelp,� he said. �We�re not just here toprotest. We�re here to help. And that�swhat that [sign] says. I think that it isgoing to help.�

One friend is a professional interiordecorative painter. Beth Falkenbach, a resi-dent of Indianapolis and a member ofTrader�s Point Christian Church, discussedthe connection between her artistry and herfaith in God while painting the letters ofthe sign.

�I feel that it is very important to usethe gifts that God has given us to servehim and to glorify him,� she said. �And so,in this regard, I�m able to use my art skillsto do something that will hopefully dosomething to change a woman�s life and achild�s life.�

John Hanagan, a member of St. LukeParish in Indianapolis and a veteran side-walk counselor, was stationed outside theclinic on the first morning that an abortiondoctor was performing abortions thereafter the sign was painted. Hanaganexpressed his belief that such signs canplay an important role in pro-life ministry.

She said that many members of theministry made either financial or materialcontributions to the effort to paint the sign.

McHugh also consulted many otherpeople about the message on the sign andthe images that would be on it.

In all, McHugh estimates that eightmonths passed from the time she beganthinking about the possibility of the sign toits completion. During that time, a smallerplastic sign with a similar pro-life messagewas mounted on the wall, but it was torndown within two days.

She eventually contacted John Reeder,the proprietor of the building, about paint-ing a sign on the wall. He told her that hewould pray about it. McHugh called himabout a month later and he gave his per-mission for the sign.

�My position in life is pro-life,� Reedersaid. �So if there is a way that I can helpone of the troubled ladies that go into thesite over there, if there is a way to helpthem or to bring awareness to them, I�d bein support of that.�

After receiving permission to paint thesign, McHugh secured the work of KendraThornton, a resident of Indianapolis and ajunior at Marian College. Thornton con-ducted a summer art camp in whichMcHugh�s children had participated, andMcHugh felt that she had the skills andconvictions to paint the sign. Thorntonquickly agreed.

�I really liked this project because Ithought that this is a piece of art that couldmake a substantial difference,� she said.�Pictures can look pretty, but they don�tchange lives. With this, it could actuallysave a life.�

Thornton, who is a member of Trader�sPoint Christian Church in Indianapolis,knew that this large project required someextra assistance. She called on several of

Ever since Catholics entered mainstreamAmerica after World War II, anti-

Catholicism in thiscountry has lessened.It�s still �the lastrespectable prejudice,�as Arthur SchlessingerJr. called it, but it is notnearly as strong as itonce was.

It�s hard to say whenit was the strongest: inthe English colonies

where Catholics could not vote, hold officeor practice their religion publicly; duringthe time of the Know-Nothings in the 1850swhen homes of Catholics and churcheswere set on fire in Louisville, Philadelphiaand New York; in the 1880s and 1890swhen the American Protective Associationvowed to keep Catholics from public officeand worked for the repeal of immigrationlaws; or during the 1920s when the KuKlux Klan was so strong, especially here inIndiana.

The first two decades of the 20th century

would certainly be in the running for themost vicious anti-Catholic decades. The so-called Guardians of Liberty led the bigotryat that time through its slanderous newspa-pers. A common feature of these publica-tions was an article by an ex-priest or ex-nun exposing sordid goings-on in conventsand monasteries among priests and nuns.

The authors of those articles also dis-covered a lucrative business. They trav-eled around the country making anti-Catholic speeches. Seldom were theyreally ex-priests or ex-nuns, but few peo-ple bothered to check their credentialsbecause their sponsors believed everyword they spoke.

One man who did check, though, was aparish priest in Hartford City, Ind. Whenan �ex-priest� came to the MethodistChurch there in 1908, 33-year-old FatherJohn F. Noll attended the lecture with sev-eral of his parishioners. After the manspoke, Father Noll challenged him, sayingthat he doubted that the man was ever apriest or even a Catholic. If he was aCatholic, Father Noll said, he would beable to answer a simple question from TheBaltimore Catechism. He asked the defini-

There�s something to be said for order.After all, God introduced us to this greatidea when he ordered the universe. One

thing religious andnon-religious peopleseem to agree on is thefact that we are part ofa natural system thatfollows certain rules,which can�t be brokenwithout usually direconsequences.

Although humanskeep trying to change

the rules, they still apply. Babies are cre-ated in a certain way and seasons changeat appointed times, bringing appropriateweather, flora and fauna with them. Thefood chain keeps on linking creatures andthe moon continues to pull ocean tides.

That�s one kind of order. Another is thekind some of us learned at our mother�sknee, namely how to be neat and tidy. Thisalso is a system, but unlike God�s it can beoverdone. While God remains in sereneremote control of his system, the peoplewho create this kind of order may becomeobsessively picky about it.

Sometimes children rebel against suchmodel cleanliness in their ancestral homes

by creating exactly the opposite effect intheir own apartments or houses. One of mycousins, the only daughter of my mother�sidentical twin sister, is a case in point.While my aunt was a clone of my mom inevery way, including the neatness depart-ment, her daughter rejected their ideasabout a clean house.

Whenever we visited my cousin, wesecretly scrubbed the bathtub withcleanser before taking a bath. We exam-ined our bed carefully before getting intoit, since cockroaches had motel rightsthere, and shook out our clothing beforedonning it. We pretended we didn�t noticethat our shoes stuck to the kitchen floorwhen we walked on it.

Not that I am exactly righteous in thematter of neatness, you understand. Whenthere are eight people living in a 1,750square-foot home, perfection is not anoption. Thus, while my family didn�t stickto the floor or entertain bugs, we had ourshare of dust bunnies under the furnitureand fingerprints on the windows.

Despite these failings, I always believedthat order is important, especially whenraising a family. Children respond well toroutine when they�re young, and the habitsthat order creates will be useful to them all

It is commonly believed that wisdomcomes with age. An important part of

that wisdom consistsof the realization ofhow little we actuallyknow.

St. ThomasAquinas livedapproximately800 years ago. Hewrote book afterbook delving into thegreat mysteries of

God and pluming the depths of theScriptures. His works are still studiedand read today by Christians of manytraditions.

And yet, as the end of his lifeapproached, God gave him a profoundvision that forced him to see all of hislife�s work from a new perspective. Washe given a revelation of the heavenlycourt with all of the saints and angelssurrounding God�s throne, praising himeternally? Did the Lord open his heartand mind to divine truths as yetunknown?

We�ll never know, at least on this sideof the grave. All we do know is thatafter this vision was over, St. Thomasnoted that all of the countless volumesthat he had written in the past �were likestraw��they had no substance to themin comparison with what the eye of hisheart had just seen.

You and I need not be gifted mystics orlearned theologians to experience some-thing of the greatness of God and morefully comprehend our own smallness, howlittle wisdom and knowledge we actuallypossess.

For if we open ourselves to it, eachand every parent can be given a visionno less overpowering than the one expe-rienced by St. Thomas. When a baby, anew human person, is conceived in thewomb of his or her mother, the parentsare participating in a powerful creativeact of God, something that fundamentallyis the same as what we read about in thefirst pages of the Bible.

None of us are worthy to be able to beco-creators with God. It is not a right thatwe possess. It is only through his life-giv-ing love for each one of us that he inviteshusbands and wives to be just that. Andthe miracle doesn�t end there. As thebaby grows in the womb and is eventuallyborn, parents are called to give specialloving care to him or her.

When parents care for their children,they become living signs of our heav-enly Father, who cares for and loveseach one of us in a manner that is farbeyond our imagination. Our attentive-ness to our children is a sign of God�sfatherhood, not just to them, but to our-selves as well.

How is it that we, who can be so self-ish, can give of ourselves in love to givelife to a new human person? How is itthat we, who constantly stumble and fallin our parenting, can be signs of theFather who cares for us all?

We have started to become wise whenwe are brutally aware of our own inade-quacies and yet acknowledge that God,through his grace, has called us andenabled us to be his co-creators and liv-ing signs of his loving care.

My wife, Cindy, and I were giventhis beginning of wisdom when we wereblessed with our son, Michael. God haschosen to bless us again with anotherpregnancy, and we hope to see our childborn sometime in the middle of nextJanuary.

Are we becoming wiser as we becomeparents of another child? I�m not sure.But I do know that, like St. Thomas, wewere given a vision of God�s greatnessand our smallness in that moment whenwe first became parents. And our under-standing of that insight will hopefullyonly increase as our new baby grows inCindy�s womb. �

A few years ago, I accidentally cameacross information about consecrated vir-

gins. I meant toresearch this thor-oughly at the time, butbecame sidetrackedwith too many otherprojects. Recently, myinterest was piquedagain.

This time, researchrevealed a coinci-dence: the United

States Association of Consecrated Virgins(USAVC) held its 2004 �Seeking the Faceof Jesus as Consecrated Virgins� retreatthis week at the very same place myAcademy of Notre Dame reunion washeld earlier this month�the Shrine of OurLady of the Snows in my hometown ofBelleville, Ill.

USACV members are women who havebeen consecrated according to the Rite forthe Consecration of a Virgin living in theworld. Besides retreats, conferences aredesigned for women discerning and/orpreparing for this vocation. Diocesan per-

sonnel, such as spiritual directors, canonlawyers and pastors, also attend. Earlierthis month, a conference was held inChicago at the same time I was reunitingwith classmates in southern Illinois.

St. Louis Archbishop Raymond L.Burke is the episcopal moderator forUSACV, which has liaisons with theU.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops aswell as the National Conference of(Diocesan) Vicars for Religious.

Who are consecrated virgins? Accordingto an extensive Web sitewww.consecratedvirgins.org, they arewomen practicing one of the oldest sacra-mentals in the Church.

In May of 1970, the sacramental wasrestored for women living in the world.Consecrated virgins have never married orlived in open violation of chastity�and byage, prudence, and good character aredeemed suitable for a life of chastity in theservice of the Church and others. They sup-port themselves by work, pension or inde-pendent means. They must be admitted toconsecration by a bishop.

When the �ex-priest� didn�t answer,Father Noll called on one of the parish-ioners, who gave the definition. Father Nollasked another question, �What is actualsin?� When the �ex-priest� didn�t answer,Father Noll had another parishionerrespond. He then went on to speak to theaudience about what the Catholic Churchreally taught instead of what the �ex-priest�claimed that it taught. And he invited theaudience to come to the Catholic church thenext Sunday to hear more.

Father Noll went to other places inIndiana to confront anti-Catholic speakers.Then he began to write a little monthly32-page pamphlet that he called The ParishMonthly, first for his parish and then forother parishes in Muncie, Marion, UnionCity and Alexandria. Next, he sent copiesto priests throughout the country, explain-ing that pastors could add their own pagesfor their parishes and it could be paid forthrough local advertisements.

Soon more than 200 parishes wereordering The Parish Monthly, and FatherNoll found that he was in the publishingbusiness. �

We all feel better when we know what�scoming next. As kids, we may gripe abouteating meals at appointed hours or going tobed on time or doing the same old chores,but secretly we depend upon such routines.They make surprises actually fun whenthey happen, including on birthdays andother special occasions.

Kids also thrive on traditions, such asshopping for school supplies or celebratingholidays in certain ways. The certainty thatMom or Dad will pick them up at this timeor that, or faithfully monitor their home-work, or require that they tell them wherethey�re going and when they�ll return, canhelp make a child feel secure.

When we create order in our lives, we�reimitating the order of God�s universe. Thedivine order assures us that God�s promiseswill be fulfilled, and the order we createourselves can also be reassuring for us andfor others. �

The Sunday ReadingsSunday, Aug. 29, 2004• Sirach 3:17-18, 20, 28-29• Hebrews 12:18-19, 22-24a• Luke 14:1, 7-14

The first reading for this weekend�sliturgy is from the Book of Sirach.

This book is fromthat class of biblicalwritings called theWisdom Literature.In general, this classof writings representsan effort to combinetraditional Jewishbelief with the high-est of human wis-dom.

This process is not an attempt toblend these two elements together sothat neither has integrity and identity ofits own. It is not to equate one with theother. Rather, it sees great value inhuman wisdom, and it shows that soundhuman logic has no quarrel for divineRevelation.

This reading is a statement addressedto a male child (or grandson). Imagingthe origins suggested by this style ofwriting in itself reveals how theWisdom Literature developed in manycases. Primarily, these books wereformed outside the Holy Land. Immi-grants from the Holy Land to distant,foreign and pagan places wrote many ofthese books.

These authors wished to convincetheir own children of the worth of theancient Hebrew religion so that the reli-gion would survive into the futurethrough the lives of the young.

In this weekend�s reading, the authorof the book, Ben Sira, or son of Sira,tells his son to live his life with humil-ity.

Be humble in dealing with others, headvises. Humility, not aggressiveness,wins friends and true supporters.

For the second reading, the Churchgives us a section of the Epistle to theHebrews.

Heavy with the richest imagery ofthe Old Testament, Hebrews both sub-limely describes Jesus as the Lamb ofGod and as the Messiah long promisedby God, but it calls Christians to realizetheir unity with Christ in their faith.

Through and with Jesus, true disci-ples go forward through their own life

experiences to meet God on the holymountain, Zion.

St. Luke�s Gospel is the source of thelast reading.

The Gospel reading is a parable.Etiquette at the time of Jesus was veryimportant and exacting. Nothing was agreater honor than to be invited to joinanother in a meal, unless it was to inviteanother to a meal.

As to conversation in these socialsettings, bold assertiveness, and cer-tainly criticism of the host, wasabsolutely out of place.

An atmosphere of unspoken deceitsurrounds this meal. The Pharisees atthe dinner watch Jesus intently, not tolearn but to discredit the Lord. Self-cen-tered, they vie for places of honor at thetable.

Jesus spoke frankly and very bluntly.He rebuked the ambitious Pharisees. Itneeded to be said.

Reward belongs to God. He gives itto those deserving of it, not in humaneyes, but in God�s eyes. We cannotgrasp a place at God�s banquet table.Humble in our sinfulness and in ourhumanity, we must await God�s invita-tion.

ReflectionHumility usually is misunderstood,

and in any event it is not cherished inthis culture.

For decades now, people have beenurged to act on impulse and speak theirmind, regardless of the effect upon oth-ers. �Honesty� has become almost thesupreme virtue.

Deceit is not the better way. It is notbetter to be silent in the face of wrongor to surrender self to the control ofothers. Rather, this parable calls us tothe fact that humans are limited in theirabilities to perceive accurately and toact appropriately.

For this reason, Revelation, madeperfect in Christ, is the greatest of gifts.Focusing upon Jesus, humans havebefore them the best and surest ofguides.

However, to see the Lord, and thento follow the Lord, humans musthumbly admit who and what they are.They are limited, but as Hebrewsassures us, they are redeemed and areheirs with Christ of the heavenly king-dom. �

QI am thoroughly confused. Recentissues of our Catholic newspaper and

Catholic magazinessay that, according tosome bishops, votingfor a candidate whobacks abortion is asin, and we should notgo to Communion.Other bishops tell ussomething different.

How can some-thing be a mortal sin

in one part of the country and not a sinsomewhere else? It seems to me no politi-cian�s hands are clean, even on abortion.

Are we expected to avoid voting alto-gether until we have a �perfect� candi-date, which will never happen?(Maryland)

AMy mail is heavy these days withquestions similar to yours. Catholic

voters are wondering how to work theirway through this.

Fortunately, the United StatesConference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB)gave us some major help at their meetingin Denver this past June.

After a brief opening statement,interim reflections from the USCCB taskforce on Catholics and political life werepresented by Cardinal TheodoreMcCarrick of Washington, ArchbishopWilliam Levada of San Francisco andCardinal William Keeler of Baltimore.

Because of space limits, what I sayhere will apply their comments only tovoters�not to politicians�in response toyour question.

Your concern must be resolved onbasic moral principles of cooperation withevil.

In Catholic tradition, there are twokinds of such cooperation�formal andmaterial.

Archbishop Levada, quoting Pope JohnPaul II�s encyclical �The Gospel of Life�(#74), defines formal cooperation in thiscontext as �a direct participation in an actagainst innocent human life or a sharingin the immoral intention of the personcommitting it.�

Such participation or intention is neverlawful.

Material cooperation is an action thatmay abet a sinful act, but does notdirectly participate in it and does not con-cur in the evil intention of the perpetrator.Material cooperation, therefore, is notautomatically sinful, but it is lawful for aproportionate reason. (Proportionate rea-son would weigh factors such as the

effectiveness of one�s choice for achiev-ing a desired good or avoiding an evil,and overall benefits of one option overanother.)

Cardinal McCarrick, citing a letterfrom Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, head ofthe Congregation for the Doctrine of theFaith, applies that distinction to voters.

A Catholic would be guilty of sinfulformal cooperation in evil, he said, �onlyif he were to deliberately vote for a candi-date precisely because of the candidate�spermissive stand on abortion.

�However, when a Catholic does notshare a candidate�s stand in favor of abor-tion and/or euthanasia but votes for thatcandidate for other reasons, it is consid-ered remote material cooperation, whichcan be permitted if there are proportionatereasons.�

Archbishop Levada quotes St. ThomasAquinas in his �Summa Theologiae� thateven God tolerates some evils, which hecould remove, but if he did it would resultin even worse evils. Civil authorities, saysThomas, must sometimes do the same(�Summa Theologiae,� II-II-q10-11).

This is simply good traditional ethics.Without going through all these moraltechnicalities, I believe most people ofgood will, Catholic or not, almost intu-itively use this process for making impor-tant moral distinctions and decisions.

Some other USCCB remarks are rele-vant. Interestingly, the bishops severaltimes acknowledge they need to do moreto persuade people about dignity-of-lifeissues.

Bishops have long been engaged inteaching and internal Church �dialogue,�according to Archbishop Levada, but�that dialogue has not been effectivelyengaged for many Catholics in politicallife and in American culture at large.�

Cardinal McCarrick said similarly,�We cannot communicate and persuadesimply through newspaper columns orissuing statements.�

�We bishops,� Archbishop Levadareported, �owe it to our people to achievea reasonable consensus among ourselveson issues affecting the common status ofCatholics in American culture and politi-cal life.�

It seems to me these insights from thebishops can resolve many questions aboutconscience formation which, as the bish-ops note, the Catechism of the CatholicChurch calls �a lifelong task� (#1784).

Jesuit Father Thomas Widner, former editor of TheCriterion, was recently named rector of the JesuitCommunity at Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School inIndianapolis.

The appointment was announced on July 1 by VeryRev. Edward W. Schmidt, S.J., provincial of the ChicagoProvince of the Society of Jesus.

Father Widner was born in Beech Grove in 1942 andattended Our Lady of Lourdes School and the formerSt. Bernadette School, both in Indianapolis.

He attended the Bishop Bruté Latin School inIndianapolis his freshman year of high school and FatherThomas Scecina Memorial High School for the remain-ing years.

He graduated from Marian College in Indianapoliswith a bachelor�s degree in English in 1964 and, after ayear of accelerated Latin studies, entered major seminaryat Kenrick Seminary in St. Louis. In the summers, hepursued a master�s degree in English from the Universityof Notre Dame, which he earned in 1969, the same yearhe was ordained for priestly ministry in the Archdioceseof Indianapolis.

As a diocesan priest, Father Widner taught at the LatinSchool from 1969 to 1973, at which point he entered parish

work at St. Andrew the Apostle Parish in Indianapolis.In 1975, he was appointed associate editor of The

Criterion, the newspaper of the Archdiocese ofIndianapolis, and in 1976 became its editor, a position heheld until 1984, when he was named associate pastor at

St. Barnabas Parish inIndianapolis.

Father Widner also edited AJourney of Faith: Sketches ofthe People and Parishes of theArchdiocese of Indianapolis inCelebration of Her 150thAnniversary.

In 1985, Father Widnerentered the Jesuit novitiate inBerkley, Mich.

From 1985 to 1991, he com-pleted the formation processrequired to become a Jesuit.During that process�from1987 to 1990�Father Widner

served on the staff of America magazine in New York.In 1991, he was appointed associate director of the

Spiritual Renewal Center in Hammond, Ind., and a year

later was invited to become editor-in-chief of theCatholic New World, the newspaper published by theArchdiocese of Chicago.

He was appointed communications coordinator for theChicago Province of the Society of Jesus in 1995, wherehe managed publication of the province�s quarterly mag-azine, Partners (which was then called Contact).

Father Widner then did retreat work at MilfordSpiritual Center in Milford, Ohio, from 1997 to 1999. In1999, he was appointed secretary for communications atthe Jesuit Conference in Washington, D.C., where heedited and published the National Jesuit News, a nationalnewspaper published seven times a year.

He served in this capacity until he was assigned rectorof Brebeuf�s Jesuit community.

Father Widner served on the school�s board of trusteesfrom 1992 to 2000. He will move to Indianapolis andbegin his new assignment later this year. �

ST. LOUIS�Embryonic stem cell research, which killsdeveloping embryos, has not cured any diseases and cancause tumor growth, a nationally known bioethics specialisttold diocesan pro-life directors and state CatholicConference directors during an Aug. 6 presentation inSt. Louis that was sponsored by the U. S. Conference ofCatholic Bishops� Secretariat for Pro-Life Activities.

Father Tadeusz Pacholczyk, director of education for theNational Catholic Bioethics Center in Philadelphia and apriest from the Diocese of Fall River, Mass., said manyphysicians, politicians and celebrities erroneously acclaimthe use of embryonic stem cells as a miracle cure for manydiseases when research clearly shows that adult stem cellsand umbilical-cord blood stem cells are achieving successesas medical therapies.

There�s no need to kill developing embryos to find curesfor diseases, he said, because other types of stem cells haveproven effective in medical research and treatment.

Father Pacholczyk earned a doctorate in neuroscience atYale University in New Haven, Conn., then completed post-doctoral research at Massachusetts General Hospital and theHarvard Medical School in Boston and advanced studies intheology and bioethics in Rome.

Embryonic stem cell research has become a contentiouselection-year issue, he said, but voters need to know that thekilling of human life to benefit other lives is morally wrong.

The use of embryonic stem cells for research and treat-ment has become a national and international debate, FatherPacholczyk said. �The United Nations faces the question ofwhether they should ban all types of cloning. So in order tohave an informed debate, people have to be aware of whatthe real parameters of the discussion are: What is a humanembryo? What is cloning? What are stem cells and where doyou get them from? And what�s the price that is going to bepaid if we take stem cells from certain sources like living,growing human embryos?�

Father Pacholczyk said his goals as director of educationfor the National Catholic Bioethics Center are �to educatepeople and bring together the frontiers of science and reli-gion in some way to [help people] realize that science can-not proceed entirely independent of moral concerns.�

He said �science is a tremendous power at the hands ofman, but power can be used either for good or for evil, andso there is a necessity to regulate [how] we use the powerthat science gives us in an appropriate direction.�

To educate the public, Father Pacholczyk has published abrochure listing 10 great myths in the debate over stem cellresearch. Excerpts from some of the myths explained in hisbrochure are included here with his permission.

Myth: Stem cells can only come from embryos.Fact: �Stem cells can be taken from umbilical cords, the

placenta, amniotic fluid, adult tissues and organs such asbone marrow, fat from liposuction, regions of the nose,� hesaid, �and even from cadavers up to 20 hours after death.�

Myth: The Catholic Church opposes stem cell research.Fact: �There are four categories of stem cells�embry-

onic stem cells, embryonic germ cells, umbilical cord stemcells and adult stem cells�and given that germ cells cancome from miscarriages that involve no deliberate interrup-tion of pregnancy,� he said, �the Church only opposes theuse of embryonic stem cells.�

Myth: Embryonic stem cell research has the greatestpromise.

Fact: �Up to now,� he said, �no human being has everbeen cured of a disease using embryonic stem cells. Adultstem cells, on the other hand, have already cured thousands.� Research using adult stem cells is 20 to 30 years ahead ofembryonic stem cells and holds greater promise. This is inpart because stem cells are part of the natural repair mecha-nisms of an adult body, while embryonic stem cells do notbelong in an adult body, where they are likely to formtumors and to be rejected as foreign tissue by the recipient.�

Myth: Embryonic stem cell research is against the law.Fact: �In reality, there is no law or regulation against

destroying human embryos for research purposes,� he said.�While President Bush has banned the use of federal fund-ing to support research on embryonic stem cell lines createdafter August 2001, it is not illegal. Anyone using privatefunds is free to pursue it. � The 1996 Dickey Amendmentprohibited the use of federal funds for research that wouldinvolve the destruction of human embryos. Bush�s decisionto permit research on embryonic stem cell lines createdbefore a certain date thus relaxes this restriction from theClinton era.� �

LOUIS��We�reinvolved in some of the veryimportant issues of our day,�Gail Quinn, director of theU.S. bishops� Secretariat forPro-Life Activities inWashington, D.C., told dioce-san pro-life directors andstate Catholic Conferencedirectors on Aug. 5 during thesecretariat�s 2004 pro-lifemeeting at a hotel near theGateway Arch.

�They are also some ofthe very contentious issues ofour day � abortion, stemcell research, euthanasia andcloning,� Quinn said. �Thisis what we deal with day byday.�

Servants of the Gospel ofLife Sister Diane Carollo,director of the archdiocesanOffice of Pro-Life Activities,represented the archdiocese atthe annual conference.

�The conference providedexcellent speakers trained inmedicine, law and theology,who spoke on timely lifeissues,� she said. �Forexample, Planned Parent-hood�s calculated attack onthe Catholic Church�s teach-ings and values, through itsvigorous promotion of con-traceptive mandates forCatholic hospitals, is some-thing that continues tothreaten Catholic hospitalsthroughout the UnitedStates.�

Sister Diane said she wasimpressed with a comprehen-sive educational presentationon the successes of non-embryonic stem cell research.

�Unfortunately, the media,some politicians and enter-tainers have promoted onlyembryonic stem cellresearch,� she said, �despitethe scientific proof that suchcells, that must be harvestedat the expense of humanlives, have produced no curesor treatments for diseases andconditions. Only adult stemcells are proving beneficialfor treatment of diseases.Here is where the investmentand research must be made.�

Sister Diane said she alsoappreciated the opportunity tohear lawyers discuss theimplications of partial-birthabortion and its impact onRoe vs. Wade, the SupremeCourt�s 1973 decision legaliz-ing abortion during all ninemonths of pregnancy, and thethrust to reverse Roe.

�What becomes clear asan urgent message,� she said,�is that to create a culture oflife requires not only morallaws, but the conversion ofhearts to the Gospel of Life inits fullness.� �

The milestone of 50 years for Holy Family Parish inRichmond is a cause for celebration for the entireRichmond Catholic Community.

That community is a network of three Richmondparishes: St. Andrew, St. Mary and Holy Family.

Members of all the parishes attended a 50th anniversaryMass on Aug. 15 celebrated by Archbishop Daniel M.Buechlein, former pastors of Holy Family Parish and otherpriests. The Mass was followed by a dinner.

A few Franciscan sisters from Oldenburg, who used toteach at the parish school, were also in attendance.

During the previous day, there were tours of the parishgrounds, tours of the new Seton High School, an ice creamsocial and a concert.

�Everything went perfectly,� said Father Todd Riebe,pastor of the Richmond Catholic Community. �We wantedthe Mass to be the highlight, and I think it really was.�

He estimates that about 500 people participated in forthe Mass. Father Eric Augenstein, associate pastor, alsoconcelebrated the Mass.

�I liked the ceremony,� said Carolyn Lyle, a 50-yearmember of the parish. �I was amazed at the [number of]people that attended.�

�It was the focal point of the whole celebration,� saidFrank Erdosy. Everything over the weekend was �fantas-tic,� he said, and there were no problems.

Father Riebe called all the events a �joyous celebrationof parish life.�

Ron Oberle, a member of the parish since 1957, said thatthe events were �a good time of reflection.�

Erdosy, who chaired the planning committee for theevents with his wife, DeLane, as a �thank you� for all theparish has done for them, said that it couldn�t have beendone without the hard work of dozens of people whohelped him.

�We have so much talent,� he said, �[and] that�s the rea-son this thing was a total success.�

Jo Ann Bertsch, a charter member of the parish, said thatshe has noticed that, as time goes on, �it just seems likepeople have become more involved.�

Erdosy, who has been a member for 40 years, said thatthough many people have died in that time, the parish hasnot been lacking in generous souls.

�We�ve lost a lot of good people, and what amazes me isthere�s always somebody else that will come along and pickup and do the things the people who have gone before us[did],� he said.

�I think that from the very beginning of Holy Family�sexistence, there was this spirit of working together and

working hard for the parish,� Father Riebe said, �and thepeople have never lost that. Whatever needs to be done,they�re ready to do it.�

He said that parishioners have been working on thegrounds and the buildings of the parish over the last10 years�renovating the school; adding a computer lab,new offices and a new library; and improving the gym.

The goal, Father Riebe said, is for the parishioners tounderstand that they need to take what has been given tothem through the sacrifices of those who came before and�pass it on to the next generation in even better shape thanwe received it.�

Holy Family Parish, he said, is much younger thanSt. Andrew and St. Mary parishes, which were founded inthe mid-1800s. He calls members of the two older parishesthe �parents� of Holy Family because they were asked tohelp raise the funds for the new parish.

�The two parishes worked together to really give birth toHoly Family, and so we really recognized that in our cele-brations,� Father Riebe said.

In recent times, the parishes of the city of Richmondjoined together as one Catholic community. Everythingthey have is shared.

�The beautiful thing about Richmond now is that HolyFamily shares in all of the ministries with the other twoparishes,� Father Riebe said. In all, it is about 80 ministries.

He said that he hopes that those ministries continue toexpand and that the community will continue to be openenough �so that we will respond to new needs that webecome aware of.�

Bertsch said that besides having been involved with theparish council she is also member of the Women�s Guild,which is a group that all three parishes formed. She likeshow the parishes have joined together.

�I think it�s one of the best things that ever happened tous,� Bertsch said. �It used to be, years ago, that there was alot of rivalry between the parishes, and now we�re one, big,happy family.�

�The power of our witness in Richmond is so muchstronger together like this than it would be if we were threecompletely separate parishes,� Father Riebe said.

�There�s no reason for a Catholic to miss Mass in ourtown,� Oberle said. He was the contractor for the buildingof the current church, which was completed in 1978.

The new church replaced a temporary church structurethat was christened with its first Mass on Aug. 15, 1954.Father Robert Minton was the first pastor of the parish andremained at that post until his death in 1981.

Lyle remembers him with fondness. �He was quite acharacter,� she said. �You had to take him the way he was.�

She recalled a hot summer day several decades agowhen she saw Father Minton up on a ladder working on theschool building. Lyle had just scolded her husband, Harold,for working in the heat, and told the pastor to get down.

�He said, �I don�t have any wife telling me what to do,� �Lyle said. �So that�s the kind of a person he was.� Shepaused, laughing softly. �I liked him.�

Bertsch said the parish has had �some very good priests.�Besides Father Minton and Father Riebe, there have only

been two other pastors: Fathers John Hartzer and RobertMazzola.

Bertsch, who is also on the social committee and serveswith her husband, Joe, as an extraordinary minister of holyCommunion, speaks highly of the parish.

�We have eight children who attended Holy FamilySchool when it first started, and they all still feel like that�stheir home parish, although six of them live in Florida rightnow,� she said.

When asked why she has stayed with Holy Family forhalf a century, her response was simple: �Everything that Iever wanted in a parish is there.� �

Hispanic Outreach in Missourihelps immigrants find housing

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (CNS)�Leaning against a weatheredwooden post, Faustino Barbosa looked out over a railroadspur on the south side of St. Joseph. �When I was a child inthe 1930s, we lived in a boxcar near these railroad tracks.My father worked the switches. There were four boxcarsand four families living in them,� he remembered. Barbosa,74, is now a great-grandfather and involved in providingreligious and social services to a new wave of Hispanicsarriving in the area. �People cannot live in boxcars anymore,� said Barbosa, a member of Hispanic Outreach, aministry team which provides community support for thegrowing Hispanic population in St. Joseph. The result isthat finding housing is a main service of Hispanic Outreach,founded in 1997 by Hispanics and supported by CatholicCharities of Northwest Missouri and the U.S. bishops�Catholic Campaign for Human Development. Among thosebeing helped to find housing are members of the Mirandafamily, who clandestinely crossed the U.S.-Mexican borderto settle first in Los Angeles before traveling halfway acrossthe United States to St. Joseph.

Life Teen parishes to makechanges to youth Mass

ST. LOUIS (CNS)�Much like a precious jewel thatsometimes needs polishing, Life Teen is making somechanges to the way its teen Mass is celebrated. That�s theanalogy Msgr. James Moroney, executive director of theU.S. bishops� Committee on Liturgy, used in a recentvideo sent to 952 Life Teen parishes around the countryregarding the changes. The changes in the Life Teenmodel of liturgy are in accord with the most recent versionof the General Instruction of the Roman Missal, whichPope John Paul II released in 2000. Two of the mostnoticeable changes with the Life Teen Mass are the cessa-tion of a period during the Mass when teens would nor-mally enter the sanctuary and gather around the altar dur-ing the eucharistic prayer. Life Teen also is asking its par-ticipating parishes to stop the practice of saying, �TheMass never ends. It must be lived,� at the conclusion ofthe liturgy.

Henri Nouwen Society launchesWeb site dedicated to late author

NEW YORK (CNS)�The Henri Nouwen Society haslaunched a new Web site at www.henrinouwen.org thatoffers daily meditations, weekly reflections and discussionguides based on the writings of the prolific priest-authorwho died in 1996. The society, with offices in New Yorkand Toronto, was established in 1998 to extend FatherNouwen�s spiritual and literary legacy and to provide ameans for people from a variety of backgrounds to buildChristian community. The Web site also offers an innova-tive spiritual direction program called Mentors for SpiritualGrowth, through which spiritual growth is supported bye-mail or telephone. An events calendar lists readinggroups and retreats throughout North America, includinglocations, themes and contact information. Currently,Nouwen reading groups are meeting in New York;Minocqua, Wis.; and Chestnut Hill, Mass. Father Nouwen,who was born in Holland in 1932, wrote more than 40books on the spiritual life.

Pope prays that return of iconbrings Catholics, Orthodox closer

CASTEL GANDOLFO, Italy (CNS)�Calling theBlessed Virgin Mary the �mother of unity and of love,�Pope John Paul II prayed that the return of a Marian iconto the Russian Orthodox Church would bring the Catholicand Orthodox Churches closer together. Marking theAug. 22 feast of the Queenship of Mary, the pope alsoexpressed again his thanks to God and to the individualswho helped him make his Aug. 14-15 pilgrimage to theShrine of Our Lady of Lourdes in France. Speaking toseveral thousand visitors gathered in the courtyard of hissummer villa for the recitation of the Angelus, the popeprayed that �the heavenly mother of the redeemer wouldbe more welcomed, loved and venerated by the Christianpeople.� The pope asked his visitors to turn in prayer withhim �to the Virgin Mary venerated under the title of�Mother of God of Kazan.� � Pope John Paul explainedthat an icon of the Mother of God of Kazan image, whichleft Russia sometime in the 1920s, �after a prolonged stayin different places, reached the apartment of the popesome years ago.� Since 1993, he said, he had kept theMarian icon above his desk, where it has �watched over�his daily work. �

archbishop reflected on the importance of today�s semi-narians traveling to places of historial significance in thelife of the archdiocese.

�It�s important for them to be in touch with the historyof our local Church,� he said, �because it�s an inheritance,a heritage that we carry forward with us.

�For them visually to be tied to the roots through thepilgrimage � [is] an aid to get a larger sense that we�renot just a Church in the day we come from. We have apast and we have a future.�

In the afternoon, the seminarians visited St. MaryParish in New Albany and its pastor, Father WilliamErnst. After praying the rosary in the church, the seminari-ans walked to the nearby Holy Trinity Heritage Court, theplace where the church of the former Holy Trinity Parish,established in 1836, burned to the ground in 1975.

They also viewed the outside of the home of CardinalJoseph E. Ritter, a son of St. Mary Parish, former arch-bishop of Indianapolis and later archbishop of St. Louis.

Traveling as pilgrims to, praying at and learning aboutthese important places in the history of the archdiocesewas an important event for both the new and returningseminarians.

Scott Nobbe, a member of St. Thomas the ApostleParish in Fortville, who is starting his third year of studiesat Saint Meinrad School of Theology, noted how the triphelped him to connect with a group of seminarians whohave a wide range of years completed in their formation.Some are close to being ordained as priests, while othershave eight or more years ahead of them.

�It�s hard to make that connection a lot of times,� saidNobbe, �so if we do something like this, this kind of pil-grimage, it�s something that closes that gap.�

One of the new seminarians that Nobbe traveled withwas Eric Lecher, a member of St. Mary Parish inGreensburg, who is starting his junior year at MarianCollege and will be one of the first residents of the BishopBruté House of Formation on the college�s campus.

Despite the fact that many of his brother seminarianshave been in formation for several years, Lecher notedthat this trip allowed many of them to experience some-thing new with him.

�It was great just to be able to be one with all theguys,� Lecher said, �as well as share in a lot of people�sfirst experiences of being in these parishes here.�

Father Moriarty thinks that this now annual pilgrimage,which began last year at the suggestion of ArchbishopBuechlein, plays an important role in the seminarians�priestly formation.

�In the end, God willing, if they are ordained priests,it will strengthen their identity as priests, particularly fortheir local Church,� he said. �We go and we walk in thefootsteps of those who have gone before us in hopes thatas they were found faithful, they will find us faithful,that generations in the future will find us faithful.� �
