Curriculum Planning and Implementation

The Vision statement of the college is To provide Humanizing and Liberalizing Education so as to form responsible citizen who in solidarity with others will create a just society,The Mission statement of the college is To empower young women, with knowledge skills and competence and to provide them with opportunities to understand the present society and critically analyse its structures and enable them to contribute in creating a more human and just society. The same has been integrated into students in their three years of stay in the college, by making each person understand the importance of being human in order to create a just society. The staff, the students and the stake holders are constantly made aware of the aims and objectives through the activities conducted in the College, College Handbook, College Magazine and Prospectus. The Vision & Mission statements of the college is also integrated through various clubs such as NSS, Eco Club, Social Leadership Club, Inter College Competitions, Intra College Competitions, AICUF, Reader Leader Club.

1.1.2 How does the institution develop and deploy action plans for effective Implementation of the curriculum? Give details of the process and substantiate through specific example(s). The Bangalore University curriculum is strictly followed in all the semesters with prescribed specialisation of affiliated courses. According to the system of Choice Based Credit System the college has made it mandatory to have one Co-Curricular activity for each semester. Course plan is framed in the beginning of each semester by the subject teachers and discussed during the departmental meetings so that it will be strictly implemented. ICT is effectively used by the teachers to make the curriculum interesting as well as interactive. Project work is made mandatory for all the major subjects to develop the research aptitude and incite. Students are sent to internships to get hands on experience of the job to get the practical exposure of the concerned subjects.For Example BA Communicative English students are sent to (Print media such as two students to DNA, five students toBangalore Mirror, four to Deccan Herald, six to Punjab Kesari, Electronic Media such three students to 91.1 fm, five students to Radio Mirchi) for internship in all semesters, which enabled them to grow in their communicative skills and technical skills as well. BA students prepare Lab Journals, Radio CDs, Documentary on social issues (Trans genders, Child Labour, old age, blind, exercises, stress, women empowerment) mini projects on eve teasing, ban on plastic, hygiene in the campus. Advertisement on social awareness. BBM students are sent to (HAL, KSRTC, IBM, BIG BAZAAR) industries and organisations. B,Sc Rehabilitation students were sent to (differntly abled organisations, NIMHANS, blind organisations) NGOs and hospitals. Mid Semester and End semester examinations are being conducted by the institution along with supervision of the examination committee.

What type of (procedural and practical support) does the teachers receive (from the University and / or institution) for effectively translating the curriculum and influencing teaching practices? Institution organises Faculty development programme- in the beginning of each semester College organizes State/National seminars and conferences to update the faculty about the current teaching philosophy and pedagogies. Staff is encouraged to attend National and international conferences organised by the university and also the institution insists the staff to present papers in the conferences College organizes Guest lectures and workshops by eminent personalities to enhance the abilities of the faculty.

1.1.4 Specify the initiatives and contributions of the institution in the effective implementation of the curriculum provided by the affiliating University or other statutory agencies.Our Institution is striving to take the van guardian step in all arena of curriculum with an array of programmes to move in this direction. Our institution is affiliated to Bangalore university and strictly follows the syllabus designed by the university The staffs constantly encourages the students to give presentations, the subject experts are brought to deliver lectures, subject related movies are shown, hands on training programmes are given, frequent field visits are conducted so that the existing curriculum is made more effective to the students. The institution provides ICT enabled programmes with the necessary technology and equipment such as LCDs, projectors, language lab, computers, and internet. The students are given hands on experience by visiting industries, social organizations, NGOs, radio stations, electronic media, print media, medical institutions, etc.

1.1.5 How does the institution network and interact with beneficiaries such as industry, research bodies and the university in effective operationalisation of the curriculum?The staff has taken interest to bring about an all-round development of the students and as a result of which they have collaborated the institution with various organizations to train the students. Tally classes are conducted by Green Technologies NEN (National Entrepreneurship Network) is an Organization which takes an initiative in inculcating Entrepreneurship awareness amongst students. The college has been in collaboration with NEN for past four years. Practical Counselling Sessions with NIMHANS, for past three years. The internship with Media (Radio, Print, and Advertisement), The college library has collaborated with BRITISH COUNCIL LIBRARY. Extension activities are held by the Institution to help students realize, their voluntary services to the society at large. NSS and AICUF activities are carried on every year with various programmes extended for the entire year. For example;

1.1.6 What are the contributions of the institution and/or its staff members to the development of the curriculum by the University? (number of staff members/departments represented on the Board of Studies, student feedback, teacher feedback, stakeholder feedback provided, specific suggestions etc)The staff contribution to the university: The senior faculty is regularly deputed by the college to offer ideas and suggestions, to the University with respect to syllabus revision. Departments of Hindi, English, Kannada, Commerce, Management, Mathematics, Economics, Computer Science, Physics, Rehabilitation Science faculty have participated in Bangalore University Syllabus Revision, time and again carrying suggestions, taking the initiative to bring a change in the curriculum to cater to the needs of the present day job market. Staff is involved in setting the Question Papers and Examination Evaluation. The staff has worked as Practical Examiners, Sit in Squad and more than 30% of the staff go as Paper Evaluators for the Examinations conducted by the University in every semester.

If yes give details on the process (needs assessment, design, development and planning) and the courses for which the curriculum has been developed?Not applicable following the curriculum designed by the Bangalore university

1.1.8. How does the institution analyze that the stated objectives of curriculum are achieved in the course of implementation? Though the syllabus is in accordance to the University the Institution has taken at most care to implement the objectives of curriculum with the help of additional tasks such as projects and assignments which help the students to connect themselves to the outside world through internet and other sources so that they will have enough information along with the existing curriculum. To enhance the technical skills of the students, all the departments have taken responsibility to take the students on field visits, they are sent to internships (Print Media, Radio, industries, health organization, NGOs,) where they learn to operate different and latest software in editing formatting, organizing, time management, interacting with people, on-job training, practical exposure to the society at large. The students from the arena of Commerce and Management are encouraged to learn Tally,E-filing and Banking and take an internship in the corporate sectors. BCA students are sent on internships to different Multinational Companies (name the coms names) to get the Practical exposure in the Technical Field. The BA students have constantly released documentaries on social issues such as Transgenders (Hijra The Third Soul), Stress Portrait among Youth, Child Labour, Orphanage, Old Age Home,(Hope's Enclave) Junk Food, Public Transport (Life line of the city), Women Empowerment, Donation of Eyes, Indian heritage (Fading dances of India )and Importance of exercise among youth.

Lateral and vertical mobility within and across programmes and courses The institution provides an opportunity for the students to pursue MBA course which is affiliated to Mysore University within our campus from 2011. (this is the first initiative by the institution to begin with the PG course) Most of the students are encouraged to get into various arena of carrier from all courses. Enrichment courses: Enabling the students to appear for the Bank competitive exams through training courses- trained by experts To enrich the communication skills of the students the management department has organised spoken skill classes in English. BA students right after the first year are motivated to take Internship in Print Media (DNA, Deccan Herald, Bangalore Mirror, PunjabKesari) where they are exposed to take tasks, learn to take interviews, write about different issues and edit. At the end of second year they take internship in Radio (91.1Fm, Radio Mirchi, FEBA) and Visual Media where they learn to track music, edit the audio clips insert music, importance of time management during the programme on air and scripting for radio. BCA students are sent on Internship to different companies to have hands on experience in the technical field. Their project reports are sent to the University at the end of the 6th Semester. BSc (Rehabilitation Science) students visit several rehabilitation centres and NIMHANS. These field visits give them a better understanding of the physically and mentally challenged people.

1.2.4. Does the institution offer self-financed programmes? If yes, list them and indicate how they differ from other programmes, with reference to admission, curriculum, fee structure, teacher qualification, salary etc. All the programmes are self- financed.

1.2.5. Does the institute provide additional skill oriented programmes, relevant to regional and global employment markets? If yes provide details of such programme and the beneficiaries.The Institution has chosen such courses which are the need of the day. Media industry opens up opportunities for the young, innovative candidates, keeping in view of this our institution has chosen B.A.(Vocational) course which exposes the students to print media, electronic media, visual media (shooting short films and documentaries) advertisement, etc. As a part of the curriculum the students bring out lab journals, radio CDs, documentaries on social issues, Mini research projects. To meet the needs of the Global budding software technology, final BCA students are provided with an opportunity to visit corporate companies and come out with real time projects. Final B.Sc. students bring out mini projects and software programme as a part of the curriculum. Our institution has chosen B.Sc. Rehabilitation course, which is unique and only one of its kind among the 600 and odd affiliated colleges under Bangalore University. This programme exclusively train students to cater to the needs of differently abled group of the society Apart from all these the institution is providing additional skill oriented programmes such as Tally, Diploma in Computer Applications, E-filing, banking, Spoken English and Advanced Java.

1.3 Curriculum Enrichment 1.3.1 Describe the efforts of the institution in supplementing the curriculum given by the University to ensure that the academic programmes meet the institutions goals and objectives. The Institution has been concentrating on providing wholesome education in aligning itself with its objectives Care is also taken by the respective Departments to inculcate culture and conduct programmes.

Apart from these the Inter College competitions which they are encouraged to attend, give them an idea of the Global Competence which they will have to face after the graduation. As the motto of the college itself is to create a just society, value education classes are made mandatory for the first semester students. The inter departmental activities, Inter collegiate,intra collegiate activities help the students to develop an urge to perform well. 1.3.2. How is the curriculum modified, enriched and organized to explicitly reflect the experiences of the students and meet the emerging/ changing needs of the employment markets? Students play an active role in the class room and in order to make classroom teaching-learning process effective: Quiz, seminars, extempore and departmental activities are undertaken Guest lectures are arranged by all the departments on various subjects by subject experts Life skills, personality development programmes are organized by the departments to develop positive attitude and outlook among the students. Through regular input sessions such as Spoken Skill Training, Communication skill and self-confidence is built amongst the students. Social Welfare Officers conduct cultural events, Sports Committee encourages the students to involve actively in sports. Various Committees work in harmony to tap the talents of the students1.3.3. AICUFin 2008, 2009 the AICUF members visited orphanage and shishuBhavan- mentally physically challenged children hosting entertainment programe.in 2011 students have visited several organizations, such as Bosco house(the rescue booth), Karunashraya(advanced cancer hospital), Cottolengo convent (physically and mentally challenged children), Leprosy homes in sumanahalli, slum of vivek Nagar, Old age home in Hosur Road, Home of hope and HIV hospital at Kothanur, etc.

1.3.5 Citing a few examples enumerate on the extent of use of the feedback from stakeholders in enriching the curriculum? The feedback from the alumni, industries, corporate companies and the parents are taken regularly. The required change at the institutional level is implemented. (For example- personality development programs for students, programs to enhance communicative skills, value education classes, and mock interviews are conducted to enhance the confidence level of the students, mock aptitude test has been regularly conducted, and physical education trainer has been appointed to enhance sportsmen skill)The feedback from the students is taken by the counsellors and grievance cell has been established to resolve their problems and satisfied their requirement periodically Academic Peers are consulted regarding its quality to make the content more practical. The suggestions and the necessary improvements are communicated to the University when the faculty attend the refresher programmes conducted by the University through Board of Studies, Board of Examination and Valuation.

1.3.6 How does the institution monitor and evaluate the quality of its enrichment programmes?The Institution has been constantly striving to improve the quality of the programmes by improving the skills of the staff and encouraging them to be resourceful and innovative. For this the college has Faculty Development Programmes in the beginning of every semester. The institution has taken initiative to organize National and State level seminars. The staff is encouraged to attend National and International Conferences. They are also encouraged to present papers in these Conferences. Regular Guest lectures by eminent personalities, Seminars and Workshops are organized by the departments to increase the abilities and involvement of the students to have a better understanding of the subject. Apart from all these, feedback from the students is taken at the end of each academic year to know about the quality of the teachers, the quality of the programmes conducted. The same is sent for evaluation to the experts, who in turn give suggestions to the individual teachers for their quality enhancement.

1.4. Feed Back System

1.4.1 What are the contributions of the institution in the design and development of the curriculum prepared by the university? The staff from various departments has been constantly participating in syllabus revision programmes.(for example, the dept. of Physics, English, & Kannada) The staff is also involved in setting the Question papers for different subjects for the university and various other Autonomous colleges. (Dept. of computer science, Hindi, Rehabilitation Science, English, commerce, management)

1.4.2 Is there a formal mechanism to obtain feedback from the students and stakeholders on Curriculum? If yes, how is it communicated to the university and made use internally for curriculum enrichment and introducing changes/ new Programmes? Course wise feedback has been taken by the students. Their suggestions have been implemented.( For example: Tally programme for the commerce students, Advance java course for BCA students, spoken English classes are conducted. Various clubs have been introduced in the college to have an exposure) Our institution has regular meetings with the governing council members (parent representatives, University syndicate members, members from the management, staff representatives and the Principal). Their suggestions have been implemented time and again to enrich the students abilities to add to the existing curriculum.

1.4.3 How many new Programmes/courses were introduced by the institution during the last four years? What was the rationale for introducing new courses/programmes?In the last four years our institution introduced only one course of B.Sc. This is a unique course in 2009 as B.Sc. Rehabilitation Science, with the objectives of to educate the students as socially responsible citizens by providing anopportunity to serve the differently abled children with special needs.
