Cycling Popularity
London 500,000 cyclists / day (2006)
Sydney 120,000 cyclists / day (2005)
London - 23% increase in 1 year (2003-2004)
Sydney - 23% increase in 4 years (2001–2005)
Cycling in the UK!
Introduction
Mayor of London’s Transport Strategy 2001
Task Force established in 2002 → London Cycle Network Plus (LCN+) Program
Cycle Route Implementation and Stakeholder Plan (CRISP) → to satisfy these objectives
2004 → London Cycling Action Plan (LCAP) formalised
Total of 286 CRISP Reports
950km of Cycle Routes
Lengths between 0.5km and 15km
What is a CRISP?(Cycle Route Implementation and Stakeholder Plan)
The Purpose of a CRISP Study
Main aims of the CRISP process are to: Raise the profile of cycling Substantially increase levels of cycling Improve the quality of the network Provide a cohesive network and a coherent approach to
implementation Provide the optimal route for cyclists Include stakeholders at an early stage Provide a costed program and encourage long term project planning Prioritise work along the Link Tackle the tough issues along the Link
CRISP Team
Consultant – guidance and engineering experience
Council Cycling Officer – Strategic viewpoint of local authority
Local Stakeholder – local knowledge
Transport for London – Viewpoint of TLRN
LCN+ - strategic view of entire network
The CRISP Process
1. Pre-CRIM Report
2. Cycle Route Inspection Meeting (CRIM)
3. CRISP Report – DRAFT for consultation with the CRISP Team
4. CRISP Report - FINAL
