The analysis by EPA two years ago showing that grain sorghum can be considered as a
feedstock to produce advanced fuel, gives Maryland farmers great confidence that winter barley
ethanol has a strong chance
of
also being categorized as an advanced fuel. The sooner EPA
makes this determination, the sooner Maryland farmers can benefit and produce some much
needed advanced biofuel as required under the Renewable Fuel Standard. We believe that this
determination is key to the long-term regional success of domestic biofuels production, and the
restoration of the Chesapeake Bay.
With clear and recognized environmental advantages as both a biofuel feedstock and a
strategy for Chesapeake Bay revitalization efforts, I believe EPA should have a strong interest in
finalizing the status of winter barley. I appreciate your consideration
of
this letter and look
forward to learning more on the status of the EP A's review of winter barley as an advanced
biofuel feedstock under
EPA s
RFS. Maryland is
committed
to enhancing Chesapeake Bay
water quality and increasing regional
production of
domestic energy sources.
Sincerely,
Buddy Hance
Secretary
