crestwood college
for Business and Enterprise
As the Head Teacher of this over-subscribed College,
I would very much like to welcome you to our, and
hopefully your, College. Crestwood continues to
develop rapidly. I am extremely proud of what has
been achieved and excited by how far we have come
on our journey. We have been graded by Ofsted for
a third time as good, demonstrating consistency in
the quality of education we provide. Crestwood is a
highly successful, innovative and personal Community
College. Due to our small size we pride ourselves on
the close relationships we have made with students and
parents. We help all learners achieve their potential
and better their life chances. We have the Gold Award
for Extended Services, the Gold Award for Professional
Development and the Gold Award for Investors in
People.
Our College is a place of learning and inspiration for all
our learners. It provides opportunity and challenge. We
are determined and relentless as we strive for the best
for our young people.
We are praised for our innovative and exciting
curriculum. We develop students’ knowledge and skills to
help them achieve and have high aspirations. We work
closely with our partner schools in Eastleigh to provide
diversity in learning.
As a Community College our students care for and
respect others. They develop self-worth, self-respect
and self-discipline. Student Voice drives much of our
improvement and we work with schools outside of
Eastleigh, developing their practice in this area.
Crestwood College is a learning
centre for all our community.
We boast superb facilities
including: a sports hall,
fitness suite, performing
area, catering room, multi-
use games area and astroturf.
Our community are engaged
with our College and we work in
partnership to provide opportunities for all, including a
very sucessfull after school club.
This prospectus cannot tell you all that we do. We are
a College with a ‘‘can do’’ attitude and a ‘‘can do more’’
culture. We never compromise on providing high quality
education and care for all our learners. It is worth visiting
so that you can experience the energy and enthusiasm
for learning the College creates.

Building success year by yearWe have much to be proud of. The number of students
achieving high grade passes exceeds the targets set.
In 2013 82% of our students achieved 5 or more high
grade passes. Every year we look set to achieve more
and we are a College that adds significant value. We care
about all our students and ensure they make progress
regardless of their starting points. Each child has a
different journey to success and it is our job to help them
achieve their potential. Our success has been built upon
the foundation of the performances in the core subjects,
as well as our Arts, Languages, Humanities and PE areas.
We have gained a justifiable reputation for excellent work
in the Specific Learning Difficulties Resourced Base, which
addresses the needs of students with dyslexia. Many of
those students gain 5 or more higher grade GCSEs after
following tailored learning interventions, one to one and
whole class teaching.

commitment of staff aims of the college4 54
Aims: to encourage learners to be responsible and to
respect the needs and rights of others
to empower learners to embark on journeys of self
belief, enrichment and achievement
to enable learners to develop skills and knowledge
that are relevant, flexible and transferable
to offer a rich, diverse and inclusive curriculum, with
progression opportunities for all
to motivate learners to embrace challenges, to have
high aspirations, continue with life long learning and
be a good citizen
to continue to develop outstanding practices through
a collaborative approach
Commitment of staffAt Crestwood we are proud to say that our
achievements are largely due to the dedication,
enthusiasm and commitment of all our knowledgeable,
loyal and consistent staff. We are united in our
determination and belief in providing the best
opportunities and experiences for all our students. We
recruit exceptionally well in all areas and our staff stay at
the College, making it stable and consistent for your child.
We believe it is important that staff continually develop
their skills and understanding which, in turn, generate
motivation, enthusiasm and the capability to enable
students to fulfil their potential.
This philosophy has been officially recognised with
the Gold Investors in People Award – one of the few
Colleges nationally to hold this. ‘‘Teachers have very
high expectations’’
OFSTED‘‘Students and staff share a very
strong sense of community’’
- OFSTED
Business and EnterpriseEnterprising individuals are creative, innovative and take
calculated risks.
We believe that our status provides relevant learning
for all our students which prepares them for life beyond
college. Many students take part in business led
challenges, such as the NDS Red Button Challenge, and
our students are well known for their victories whilst
competing against other schools. We have enterprising
students who fund raise to improve the College
environment and raise money for local charities. Our
students also represent the College nationally with our
steel band ‘Panatical’ playing at the Ageas Bowl cricket,
Exmouth Festival and Music for Youth.
Your child as an individual curriculum6 7

- OFSTED
CurriculumWe aim that our children:
achieve examination success and make excellent
progress regardless of their starting point
have the opportunity of a broad and balanced
curriculum with an enterprise ethos
have equality of opportunity to access the curriculum
have the opportunity to study a varied range of
qualifications at the College or at our partner
institutions
develop an independence in their learning
are equipped with the necessary skills to go on to
further study or employment
We review our curriculum regularly to meet the needs
of our students and ensure we offer the most up to date
range of courses and qualifications. We emphasise the
importance of the English Baccalaureate and encourage
our students to follow a broad balanced set of subjects.
Students are placed in sets for most subjects, which takes
account of their attainment. This ensures they make
the expected rates of progress right from the start. For
other subjects they will be taught as mixed ability groups.
Dynamic teaching and a creative learning environment is
fundamental to our approach to ensure students achieve
their full potential.
Progress is monitored through Parents’ Evenings and
subject specific termly progress reports. We welcome
parents into College at any time to discuss their child’s
progress. Appointments can be made by emailing staff or
by contacting Reception. We like to know of concerns,
if they arise, early and encourage parents to contact the
College immediately.
Your child as an individualThe small size of our College allows us to get to know
your child really well. No student is hidden and everyone
is treated as an individual. The students themselves
describe the College as the “Crestwood family”. We will
find those areas and ways of learning which stimulate
them to achieve their best. This knowledge helps us, as
educators, to pitch our teaching and provide challenge
on their learning journey. Every student leaves as a
successful individual, regardless of their ability and
starting points.
Parents working in collaborationWe believe parents have a vital role to play in helping
the College improve the quality of education their child
receives. We encourage parents to share their views
and become involved in the use of the College. Our
parents run a PTA and forum to share ideas and generate
initiatives for students that will help improve the quality of
provision within the College. We also have Facebook and
Twitter feeds to keep parents informed of events and to
receive comments to help us improve.

ReligionAll students study Religious Education as part of their
Humanities and Values Education programme. It is also
covered by the use of themed days and assemblies. We
are an affiliated church College, with our local church
St Peter’s. Affiliation means we embrace the values of
mutual respect, trust, tolerance and honesty. Assemblies
are held at least twice a week and include acts of
collective worship. Some of these will take place in the
local church and are multi-faith in approach. Parents have
the right to withdraw their children from all or part of
the religious education and collective worship and should
write to the Head Teacher in these instances. Sex and Relationships EducationThe College has a Sex and Relationships Education
programme which complies with the law, Hampshire
County Council guidelines and promotes responsible
behaviour. A copy of the full policy is available by request
at the Office. We have Behaviour and Inclusion workers
and a Parent Support Officer at the College, to assist
with any concerns or offer advice.

Key Stage 3This covers Years 7 and 8. During this time all the
students are taught the full range of National Curriculum
subjects. In addition, all students take part in Media &
Creative and Values Education. They are also provided
with an introduction to Business Education as part
of their Mathematics lessons, with the focus being on
financial capability.
We teach 2 languages: French and Spanish. In Year 7 all
students will follow one of these throughout Key Stage 3
and have the opportunity to take a second language.
Key Stage 4In Years 9, 10 and 11 the students can follow up to
ten courses leading to GCSEs or other equivalent
qualifications. All students take a ‘core’ of subjects
including English, Mathematics, Science, ICT, Values
Education and Physical Education.
In addition to this, students can choose to study from:
Art, ASDAN, Business Studies, Catering, Drama, French,
Geography, History, ICT (AiDa, CiDA), Film Studies, Media
Studies, Music, Photography, Physical Education (BTec
and GCSE), Spanish, Technology: Textiles, Product Design,
Resistant Materials.
For some students, who we feel would benefit more
from work-related learning, we introduce time at local
colleges and workplaces. We work closely with Eastleigh
College, Sparsholt, Above Bar for Hair College and SETA.
The high standard of learning which takes place at
Crestwood is reflected in our excellent examination
results and the very high percentage of our leavers who
go on to further education, employment or training.
All students are taught for 25 hours a week, excluding
registration and assembly time. The lessons are 75
minutes in length and each student has 4 lessons per day.

Reporting to parentsThroughout the year students are continually assessed
to monitor their progress. Students also reflect, together
with their teacher, on their own achievements and set
targets. Each student will receive three reports per
year, known as “Progress Reports”. These are across all
subjects and track progress made, with specific targets for
improvement.
In addition, parents will be invited into College with their
child to meet their teachers, where they will review
progress.
HomeworkIt is the policy at Crestwood that home learning is part of
the learning for all students. One way in which students
demonstrate that they are taking responsibility for their
own learning is by completing quality outcomes for their
homework and by submitting this on time.
The student planner is for parents to look at and sign
each week, so they can see what homework has been
set and completed. Students benefit by having a quiet
place to do their homework, away from distraction.
Our Learning Resource Centre is open between 3.00pm
and 4.00pm Monday to Thursday, as a place for quiet
study and completing homework. ICT facilities are also
available at those times. The Learning Resource Centre
is manned by teachers after College, who are on hand to
give help and guidance.
Careers and Work Related LearningA careers programme is followed by students in all years
and allows the opportunity for them to:
know themselves better
be aware of education, training and career
opportunities
make decisions about their future
manage transitions to new roles and situations
The programme provides students with a focus for their
education and prepares them for life long learning.
Some students will be encouraged to undertake a
ten-day work experience programme, where they can
develop their skills, strengths, sense of responsibility and
communication skills in the world of work.
We offer a full integrated Careers Service provided by
Solent Education Business Partnership.

student assessment spld resourced Base12 13
Student assessmentWe have embedded a policy of Assessment for
Learning across all year groups as a means of improving
the students’ own learning abilities and standards of
work. Students are taught what assessment is, why it is
necessary and are equipped with the skills to review their
work independently. This philosophy reaps many benefits
from motivating students to learn and produce work at
the top of their individual ability and to develop their
independence and sense of responsibility for what
they do.
These attributes will be vitally important to them when
they leave at the end of Year 11 and move into work or
further or higher education.
Provision for Individual Learning NeedsCrestwood College has a caring and sensitive approach
to students with individual learning needs. As with all
the students in the College, we are looking to maximise
their potential in an atmosphere of support and
encouragement. Our aim is the early identification of
a student’s needs and to provide the essential experience
of success through tightly focused Individual Education
Programmes.
The Individual Learning Needs Department collates
information on all incoming students – specific and
personalised transition arrangements are made across
the Summer Term so that students feel ready to start
in the September. Those who we identify as needing
our support have Individual Learning Programmes that
are carefully monitored. Attainable targets are set for
students and placed in their record books. Progress is
reviewed termly and new targets set. The department is
staffed by experienced Teachers and Curriculum Support
Assistants committed to providing success for all students.
The Code of PracticeThe Code of Practice supports and protects the
entitlement of students with special educational needs
and Crestwood College implements it with vigour and
enthusiasm.
Involving other AgenciesWhenever necessary, we make use of our strong
existing links with external support services, including
the Educational Psychologist Service, Ethnic Minority and
Achievement and Advisory Teachers for hearing impaired
or visually impaired students. Our Parent Support
Advisor can also signpost parents to agencies providing
specific advice.
SpLD Resourced BaseThe Resourced Base works to support and integrate
students with specific learning difficulties (dyslexia) into
our mainstream secondary curriculum. The Resource’s
prime function is to enable each student to fulfil their full
potential. Through specialist teachers and Curriculum
Support Assistants the Resource provides individually
tailored programmes of in-class support, pastoral care,
ICT provision and 1:1 sessions. Many students go on to
achieve five or more A*-C grades at GCSE level.
The need for SpLD provision is determined by the Local
Education Authority.

care of students 15gifted and talented students14
Gifted and Talented studentsWe have been awarded the full Gifted and Talented Award
by Hampshire County Council. The award recognises
the way in which we provide opportunities and challenge
for our most able students, both in and outside of the
classroom.
We aim to keep our class sizes low, providing the best
possible experience for our students.
We have developed a policy for the Gifted and Talented
that has been fully implemented across all aspects of
College life.
We pay particular attention to differentiation of work in
all classes. Our increased focus upon National Curriculum
levels and GCSE gradings through Assessment for
Learning is intended to give students a greater sense
of ownership over their learning. We also have further
enrichment activities provided in topics where students
can demonstrate their talents and extend themselves. This
focus upon the Gifted and Talented does not replace the
care that we give at Crestwood to all our students. It
should be seen as part of our continuing commitment to
help all our students develop and achieve their very best.
Care of studentsOn entry, students are placed in a tutor group and there
are several of these in each year. These are overseen
by a Year Leader. Tutors meet with the students every
day and are responsible for their well being and day to
day care. They are in the best position to offer guidance,
build self esteem and monitor attendance and academic
progress.DisciplineCrestwood College aims to promote a disciplined and
supportive working atmosphere. We expect students to
behave in a responsible manner throughout the day, in
particular following the ‘Five Golden Rules’ in each lesson.
Students are expected to be polite and courteous to
other students, teachers and all other adults in College.
No student has the right to disrupt the learning of others.
We have an internal Inclusion Room, for a few students
who need to be educated away from their peers.

The Five Golden RulesPunctuality
Be on time for all lessons.
Uniform
Wear the correct uniform at all times.
Positive Attitude
Do as you are asked when you are asked, without
question.
Equipment Bring at least one working pen, one pencil and your
planner to all lessons. Bring your PE kit for PE.
Lesson Start and Finish
Line up sensibly outside the classroom. Stand behind
chairs. Sit when asked. Finish the lesson by standing
behind your chairs. Wait for the teacher to dismiss you.
RewardsWe aim to promote high standards of behaviour, self-
discipline and learning through positive encouragement
and reward. When students do something well their
teacher will recognise this by speaking to them in class,
writing comments on their work and giving merits.
There is a merit cup awarded each term. We also hold
termly commendation assemblies. Our annual Awards
Ceremony, recognising those students who have worked
consistently well, is the highlight of the year.
SanctionsStudents are treated firmly but fairly and there will
be regular contact with home if we feel a child is not
learning as well as we feel they can.
Detentions, report cards and internal isolation are used
for breaches of the College rules. Parents will be notified
if these sanctions are used.
No place for bullyingBullying is when someone intentionally uses behaviour
to cause another person distress. It can be both
physical and mental. We promote that all students
have the RIGHT to live their life in peace and free from
discrimination.
Students have the RIGHT to tell an adult or a peer
supporter if someone makes them unhappy.
Bullying is unacceptable and has no place in our College.
In the rare instances of bullying, it is dealt with very
seriously.
‘‘Bullying is rare and students
confirm that staff help them...
and they are confident that staff deal effectively with any incidents that occur’’

peer supporters our college18 19
Peer SupportersThe College operates a Peer Supporter Scheme,
whereby students in Years 9, 10 and 11 can volunteer and
then undertake a training course to become a designated
person’s ‘Peer Supporter’. They are available to listen to
and support other students in the College who may be
experiencing problems or are upset at anytime.
Peer Supporters are available most lunchtimes and
breaktimes and are located in a designated room that
other students can go to on a “drop in” basis, to share
their problems or just to have a quiet space. It is a
provision that all at Crestwood value.
Student VoiceThe ‘Business hub’ consists of student representatives
from across tutor groups in Years 7-11. Each student is
expected to make a positive contribution to the College
and help instigate changes. Some areas are:
evaluating learning
charity work
business and enterprise
community cohesion
These groups meet regularly to plan and discuss projects
for which they research and present their findings. All
students in the College are given regular opportunities to
express their views and make suggestions.
Student AmbassadorsWe have around sixty Student Ambassadors from the
year groups 8 to 11. These students are there to support
the College in promoting its work to wider audiences.
They are also expected to be role models to other
students. Each year group has a ‘lead’ ambassador. All
ambassador posts are awarded annually.
We also have a Head Boy and Head Girl in Year 11. They
are chosen after an application process and interview.
“Our College”The students have proved to be a valuable means to help
improve the College in so many ways.
They take an active role in improving the quality of
teaching and learning and act as an essential part in
developing such a key area.
Both staff and students have been fully consulted about
our lesson timings and change of uniform. The students
also observe lessons and then help the teachers to
improve their practice by co-constructing learning. Their
work is exceptional and they have been used to develop
this scheme in other Colleges.
‘‘A unique and outstanding feature is the role
that students take on as student observers...
empowering them to take a
learning role in evaluating lessons
and attitudes to learning’’

extra curricular opportunities Your extended college20 21
Extra curricular opportunitiesTrips can be a valuable and enriching experience for
students, giving them opportunities to broaden their
horizons, practise their language skills, understand the
cultural differences that exist and work together as
part of a small group, in a different environment away
from the College. We also participate in enterprise and
activity challenges organised by Solent Education Business
Partnership.
Many students take part in after College sports clubs.
As well as the traditional sports such as netball, football,
hockey, basketball and rugby, we are a leading College for
volleyball. We win many sporting competitions including
the Hampshire Cup for football and have students that
play at a National level. We also have many “rising stars”
who represent the College at County, Regional and
National level, particularly in football and volleyball.
We are fortunate to have excellent links with The
Sparsholt Football Academy. The coaches run sessions
at our College and many of our students go on to this
provision at Post 16.
Our steel bands are a strong feature of Crestwood and
we have bands in all year groups. Our elite steel band
“Panatical” have received national recognition by playing
at the anniversary of The Royal Associated Board of
Music at the Cadogan Hall and have also reached the
finals of the National Music for Youth on numerous
occasions. They also play across Eastleigh, the Exmouth
Festival and are a common feature at international cricket
matches at the Ageas Bowl.
We have an excellent jazz band, rock band and our vocal
talent is rapidly developing to a high standard.
‘‘The overwhelming majority of
parents... said they were pleased with the
way the College is led
and would recommend it to others’’

Residential experiencesAll Year 7 students have the opportunity to attend the
College camp, which takes place during five days at the
end of June. The camp is held at Fairthorne Manor, near
Botley and includes a varied programme of activities
focusing on teamwork and confidence building.
In other years we have trips such as Art Trips to St Ives
and London; a Year 8 camp to Tile Barn; water sports trip
to Spain; Geography trip to Italy and skiing in France and
Austria.
We also run University trips which include residential
experiences.
Your extended CollegeCrestwood is committed to encouraging high standards
in sport, music and drama and we see many students
excelling in these areas.
We boast an impressive Leisure Centre, which includes
a sports hall, drama studio and “CrestFit” fitness suite.
Our outdoor sports pitches and six tennis courts on our
multi-use games area means we are not crowded for
space. Our outside areas, including the car park, have
been improved by a landscaping scheme.
‘‘Students spoke enthusiastically

The all weather pitch for both College and Community
use has afforded us the opportunity to extend the sports
curriculum. Floodlighting has extended the use of the
pitch by other local sports teams in the community, many
of which our students belong to, outside of College
hours.
Productions and musical experiences are enjoyed by all in
the Drama Studio. Our Music department is renowned
for excellence in the County, including its joint concerts
with Southampton Jazz Workshop. Past productions
include: ‘Annie’, ‘Joseph’, ‘His Dark Materials’, ‘Cry Baby’,
‘Scrooge’, ‘Alice in Wonderland’, ‘‘Peter Pan’, ‘Midsummer
Night’s Dream’ and ‘Oliver’.

Links with the communityAs a Community College we strive to be an active
part of our community and not just a building existing
within it. We have strong links with all local schools and
take students from a wide variety. Often we take from
twenty different schools. We deliver Family Learning
programmes, Holiday Activities, Parenting Support and
have strong links with community groups and local
business.
The Extended Schools team work hard to support
the College in its development as a centre of
excellence. They provide many enrichment activities
and opportunities for our students, parents and wider
community.
Before and After College CareWe run a well attended Breakfast Club for students. We
believe that this has a significant impact on improving
both attainment and attitudes to learning from students
benefiting from a more relaxed start to their day. We
also run an After College Club for children aged 5-13
years old and holiday activities over all the school
holidays.
On site we have a Pre-School and the College is used by
a variety of community groups for sport, recreational and
educational purposes.College websiteThe College has its own website which contains a
significant amount of information about the College
