GO TO CONTENTS

Department of Media and Communication

This section provides you with an opportunity to reflect on, review and summarise your progress and achievements through the first 12 units of the qualification. You should outline the knowledge, skills and understanding you have acquired. What you know now, and what it means to you, compared with what you knew and could do before you started the course, and how this has influenced your choice of discipline or disciplines and your project proposal. It also provides an opportunity for you to explain your reasons for choosing a particular discipline or disciplines and to outline both your immediate and longer-term aspirations.

What is your overall area of interest? This information is essential for comprehension of your intended project. (avoid tedious length and technical details)

The easiest way to start is to identify and define the central problem of your idea (observable attribute of the phenomenon), answer question: What is your project about?

What is important about your project which will capture the interest of the audience? (the reader of your proposal must understand the topic of your project and has a general sense of purpose of the project)

Section 2: Project Concept (approx. 200 words)

This section provides an opportunity for you to clearly explain the concept and aims of your project, production or performance and the research and ideas that will support its development. What you anticipate producing, the levels and types of resources that you will need and an indication of the form in which you will complete and present your final realisation within the allocated timescale. This might include an indication of when and how you will use studios, equipment and other resources, how you will make use of tutorial and peer feedback and where you will incorporate independent study.

This section provides an opportunity for you to clearly explain the concept and aims of your project, the research and ideas that will support its development, what you anticipate producing, the levels and types of resources that you will need and an indication of the form in which you will complete and present your final realization within the allocated timescale.

Clearly formulate: What is the concept (media format/design) and aim of your project? Identify major elements of your project: What (who) are your influences? What will you research? Who is your target audience? Explain your role in the project. Explain technical requirements of your project.

Section 3: Evaluation (approx. 150 words)

This section provides an opportunity for you to explain how you will reflect on and evaluate your work, as both an ongoing activity and at the conclusion of your project. You should describe how you intend to record your decision making and how you will document changes to your ideas as your work progresses.

The evaluation should be a reference to your stated aims and be reflective and analytical rather than a description of actions completed.

When working in collaboration with others, you should comment on how this may impact either positively or adversely and steps you can take to minimise disruption in your progress.

Proposed Research Sources and Bibliography (Harvard Format)

This section provides an opportunity to record the initial research sources, both primary and secondary, that you intend to use.Your sources of research should be as wide as possible and could include libraries, galleries, books, theatre, cinema visits, films, videos, magazines, films, TV and Radio programmes, computer games, websites, blogs, social media, radio programmes, archive material, and other media and multi-media sources etc. Make sure you use Harvard referencing. The bibliography should be continuously updated as the project progresses.

Project Action Plan and Timetable

This section provides you with an opportunity to outline your planning and organisation over a period of weeks and the activities you will need to carry out to complete your project in the agreed time frame. The more time and thought you give to planning your project the more successful it is likely to be. It is important that you consider how you will balance ambition, time and realism in the realisation of the project. You should also include what you are going to do,

Introduction

Introduction to the Chapter - This opening section’s main function is simply to get the reader into the chapter somewhat gradually rather than jumping directly into the first substantive chapter/section. It can be as brief as one paragraph; it can be as long as three or more pages. If you prefer a briefer introduction, then begin with a paragraph something like this:

This project portfolio is a report of my final major project (FMP) for second-year UAL Extended

Diploma in Creative Media Games Film and TV pathway. The project was a short film about an

unemployed young girl who struggles to find the money to pay the rent to a landlord who threatens

her with eviction from the room she rents. This first chapter of the project portfolio presents the

background of my project starting with writing about myself, what I learned on my course and who

or what inspired me for my project. This is followed by explaining what my project is about and why

it is important. The chapter concludes by my research plan.

The Background of my Project This section is intended to provide a context for your project. It answers this question: “What special factors were at work that might have influenced the conceptualisation and execution of your project?”

Here you can take some of your previous writings and blog posts to address some of following questions. You can use any medium (Videos, photos, audio, sketches, etc.)

Use those questions as a headings for your answers:

What is it that makes me do my project? My personal experiences that influence my choices (idea for the project, my role in the

project, how it relates to my future career) What do I seek to achieve? How it relates to my target audience?

Who am I? Why I write

Use some of the work you produced for Unit 12 e.g. passions and interest that led to the research plus any previous work exploring you and your interests, feelings and especially what medium you used to express yourselves in

What did I learn on my course? Skills analysis task: The Writer’s journey

Under this section write about the range of skills that you have learned on your course:

What you learnt: how you learnt it; why you learnt it; what impact it has it had on your writing and creativity plus any future choices with regards to the style, genre, form and industry?

How is going to be related to your project? What skills will you need to carry forward? Which will you need to develop further e.g. understanding show and don’t tell.

Please make sure to provide examples of your work from individual sessions and the course portfolios/projects in this FMP portfolio as well as provide the link as evidence to your work.

Where appropriate please add images of your creative journey into your portfolio e.g. InDesing sessions and/or audio session.

Demonstrate your achievements through proposing and realising a project, which integrates the skills, knowledge and understanding acquired throughout the course. Write about your two-year experience on the course and what you have learned during the course. Also, compare where you were when you enrolled on the course and where you are now.

Use a timeline depicting skills and knowledge you acquired during your course.

What is my project about? When defining your interest/topic/theme, define it regarding some observable event. For example:

Today more and more teenagers are completing their education without real prospect to

find a job which will pay bills and offer decent start in life. Facing the challenge of not being

employed and having to pay the bills, Maria 23-year-old veterinary nurse have decided to

look for alternative ways of earning money. The film I have created for my FMP is a story

about Maria’s struggle to earn money to pay the rent and not be evicted from her home by

the landlord who gave her 24 hours’ notice to find the money. Faced with the deadline and

not heaving job or someone to borrow the money, Maria in desperation turns to crime. She

decided to rob the local shop.

My role in this project was writer/producer and film director.

Ask your self these quesitons before choosing a specific topic:

What is it that you want to find out ? Why? The purpose of the research? ( because of my interest in the topic, identified gap in the similar media products, client needs, to aid further research etc)

What interest you the most about a particular subject? For example, in case of music, it could be a specific genre of the music, artist, music video etc.

Make sure that the research can support your topic You want to be able to manage your research therefore not too broad and not too narrow.

My Research PlanMuch of this will come directly from your research report written in Unit 12 to complete this section, but there may be more information to add as a result of interviews, further knowledge and other requirements of this portfolio Research report structure:

• This should include researching existing similar media products.• Anything and everything that is already written and done about your

interest/topic in the form of written work, video, audio, interactive elements such as websites, blogs, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram posts, etc.

• Make sure that your research does not include internet based sources only. You should include at least two books, the range of magazines and other non-online sources.

Why is it important? - Importance 100

Think of your own ambitions, your target audience, niche or untapped markets etc

Introduction:

Introduce your topic of study Put your research into the broader context. Include personal reasons for choosing the topic

of the study such as research for extended project. Write briefly about what methods and research design you have used to address the topic of

the study (Mind map, interviews, survey questionnaire etc.) Write about findings and conclusion At the end, tell the reader what they can expect to read in the following chapters:

methodologies, findings and discussion.

In this chapter, you will present your research plan for Unit 12 and the FMP

Initially create a ‘mind map’ and or timeline of possible research activities and instruments you can use to inform yourself about the project idea.

Break the research process down into:

Specific questions you need to answer Specific stages Specific research tools and techniques you need to use to answer your questions (to

answer who and what and how; primary, secondary etc.) A timetable for yourself

Feel free to add images and links to add a visual, audio and interactive element to your portfolio.

Research Design/Methodologies

Methodology

Clearly explain what research methods you have used (mind maps, interviews, survey questions etc.)

Write about questions you wanted to answer and type of data you have collected (qualitative, quantitative)

Write about strengths and weaknesses of the methods you have used.

Taken mostly from Unit 12 but check to makes sure that there isn’t more information either required of you or more information that you have found out since writing the research report for unit 12.

Research design is the set of methods and procedures used in collecting and analysing data, literature etc that enables you to find

answers and solutions to a research question or problem: collate, collect, discover, analyse, reflect, evaluate. This chapter explains research design for my FMP. It starts with research questions and follows by the description of the research design and research methods used in my project.

In this chapter the you will identify the research topic and the research question and methods of research you will need to apply to help you with finding answers or prompting further research/exploration.

You can use following research themes as separate sub-titles or set your own headings and sub-headings accordingly:

• The theme you are going to research (this will be primary research you have conducted; the secondary research about subject will be in literature review)

This is anything undertaken by you, and it could be such methods as:o Online questionnaire – you could ask your Facebook friends to comment on your

project idea and give you some additional ideas how you can make it better.o Receiving feedback from your lecturers and comments on the work o You can contact companies, council, artist depending on what is your project about to

get their opinion on your project idea. o You can use your phone or tablet to research, take photos of possible locations and

places that you can use in your project.

• Target audience

Ask yourself questions: Who? What? Where?

o Who is your target audience? Who are you aiming your product at?o What type of audience is it? Investigate the target demographic and record the type of

media or entertainment they consume. o Where can you find this out? You can use, ‘YouGov Profiles’ site to find out about your

target audience demographic. (secondary)o You can set up interviews or record a ‘Vox Pops’ (primary) to find information about

your audience.

• Skills and techniques and form plus genre conventions, house styles etc…

o Come up with the plan of what characteristics, skills and techniques you will need to research in order to produce an effective, original and to near professional standard project. Show industry and/or your own examples to illustrate.

o For example, you can watch tutorials or read about how to achieve specific skills and techniques that you will need for your project (secondary)

o Experiment with a range of skills yourself (primary) (you can refer to sessions and link to blog posts).

• Production research

14

Page 15: creativewritingandjournalismstaff.files.wordpress.com…  · Web viewThis section provides an opportunity for you to clearly explain the concept and aims of your project, production

o Explain what and how: o People needed for the production/availability (how: emails, Facebook, Skype

conversation, etc.) o Research production roles that you will need to carry out and how to do it successfully

(how: the internet, media books, etc.) o Listen, watch tutorials, research range of examples of how to create similar media

products. Try and experiment yourself before embarking on making your own final product.

o Reflect on what have you learned.

List all research activities; what activities you conducted to answer your questions and collect the data? Write about data you collected, your choice of data presentation and how you structured your data analysis.

List only what is relevant to your project

The research activities should be identified such as:

Observations (observational drawings; using photography, video and audio to collect data)

Documents analysis (written, but also video and audio documents) Workshops Interviews Focus groups Surveys (visual, audio, etc.) Experiments Tests and measurements

Literature Review Who/what was my inspiration? /Contextualisation of my study This relates to Unit 12 (analysis of existing media products and any other influences) but there are a few prompts for you to consider to add to existing research from unit 12.

Choose range of media products related to your research topic ( for example music videos, TV programmes, magazines / magazine articles, photographs, books, radio programmes etc.)

Critically analyse and describe chosen media products answering the following questions?

Who produced/wrote/directed/created the work/s?

What do I know about the historical / political context of the product? ( What art movement, period ideas, political or worldview the chosen media product belongs to?

What are the influences of these practitioners/writers etc?

What skills production techniques, practices and knowledge have been used in the production and distribution and how they influence the product?

Define the audience ( audience profile: age, gender, sexual orinetation, socioeconomic status, geodemographic, psychodemographic, what sort of category they fit into; mainstream, alternative or niche).

Who owns the media product and how it influences the product you are anlysing?

Identify codes specific for each chosen media product and conventions common for all products, analyse and compare.

How does each chosen media product represent the world? ( groups, individuals, situations, stories etc. ) Look at stereotyping, genres, representations of genres, race, social classes, positive and negative images etc.

How my findings on media products/practitioners inform my topic research questions

Research FindingsUnit 12 FINDINGS

In this chapter, you will summarise the collected data and the statistical treatment, and/or mechanics, of analysis.

You will present a research report that will include the use of written, oral, visual, audio and graphic forms to present your ideas and support your arguments.

Report most significant things that you found. Use subheadings for example: Things I found about myself that influenced my topic question etc.

Summarise the most important and relevsnt aspects of what you found out from analysing three chosen media products. How will this impact on your product/s?

Analyse what chosen media products have in common and what is different or specific for each product.

How will the analysis of each product help you and aid you in developing your research furhter? Be specific and refer to questions asked previously about your chosen media products.

Has your initial research topic been affected ( change of ideas) as a result of the task you were doing? If yes or no explain why? What makes you convinced of our research topic idea?

IMPORTANT:

Analyse strength and weaknesses of each research activity. Decide which ideas to keep and which to reject or keep as an option.

Produce evidence from your research findings to support your belief or a viewpoint.

You will evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of your research tools and methods in relation to your research question.

You will summarise each piece of research, evaluating the key points and parts of information, as well as commenting on the validity of the source.

How you research findings influence further ideas for extended project?

Data analysis: Discussion from Unit 12 What strategies did you use to analyse your data? What did you find out?

Conclusion:

This section of your report should include following: Summary of your findings A short discussion about your findings. Things that you discovered about the topic that you

did not know. What did you learn from your research and how it informed your project? What implication will the findings have on your future thinking about the project? Write about limitations of the study ( limitations of the methods you used) What are your future moves and how they are informed about your findings (for example

what are interesting topics and ideas you have found and you will use in the future)?

My Project

Introduction In this chapter you should present the level of self-direction, personal initiative and commitment necessary to progress ideas and find solutions, and the practical, theoretical and technical comprehension, appreciation, knowledge and proficiency necessary to achieve identified goals. The ability to plan and organise work within a given timeframe and the efficient production of outcomes both individually and collaboratively.

Pre-Production Your pre-production paperwork / planning (pre-production portfolio) goes here.

Link to pre- production booklet and all pre-production paperwork: https://almakopricmediaproduction.wordpress.com/2018/04/30/week-25-fmp-week-4-5-online-fmp-portfolio/

What pre-production paperwork do you need to produce: E.G RESEARCH OF CHARACTERS, HUMAN INTEREST, THEMES, MEDIUM, FORMS – much of this will be taken from your research but will also include further developments, experimentation and any strategies, feedback you have received throughout the process so far (e.g. all the relevant session with regards to narrative).

Produce Pre-Production Portfolio which will formally define your project (research into form, character, themes, narrative and literary devices, location survey; risk assessment; treatment; script; budget; schedule etc.).

Pitch your proposal to the production board (video recording of your production board presentation)

Analyse your target audience. Investigate the target demographic and record the type of media or entertainment they consume.

Before you embark on your creative journey to make your product you must make sure that you reference and refer to and reflect upon any industry/published examples such as short stories, poems, scripts and their writers to ensure you are abiding by the rules of the medium/form.

What are the roles of the creatives involved (mostly you): writer, director, producer, editor, proofreader, engineer, stage manager, props, lighting, sound etc

Detail any characteristics/techniques/skills of the writing/creating/filming/recording and show how they will influence the development of the product and how you will use them: how they will impact and effect your own work/writing etc.

This should or could include: character studies, setting techniques, narrative and literary devices; structure and formats, layout, formats, style and any other characteristics/skills/techniques that you will draw on.

SHOW US THE JOURNEY TO THE PRODUCT INCLUDING EXPERIMENTING AND EARLY DRAFTING IDEAS AND NOTES ON EACH STAGE OF DEVELOPMENT.

MUCH OF THIS WILL DRIP/SEEP INTO THE PRODUCTION…

Use below as a guide:

For audio based project you will need: o Production schedule (How: create your own based on research into existing examples) o Budget (How: secondary - internet, primary - ask yourself) o Recce research/location needed (How: take images, contact individuals for permission,

etc.) o Health and safety research ( How: take images, check locations yourself, ask for

permission) o Call sheet: ( list of people involved with production of the audio project) o Props (How: make a list, ask to borrow, make it, buy it, use what you have)o Production (techniques, hardware, workflow) ( How: research what you need / how:

try it yourself) o Post -production (Edit, sound mixing, effects, etc.) (How: read, watch how other

people/professionals do it, try it yourself) o Legal and Ethical: ( evidence of seeking permission to record in public places, clearance

and permission for footage, sound-bites, quotes etc)

For print based project you will need:

o The beginning of the journey: the initial idea and aim of the writing (have you used observation, quotes, art, overheard something, been angered or passionate about the subject and the form of writing)

18

Summarise your production and post-production process. Describe, and critically analyse any production problems and the solution you experienced.

Presentation Now you have created your product think who is going to look, read or listen to it?

Cleary show that you have investigated or explored a range of ways or platforms to get your work out there.

Place your product in an environment; a gallery or virtual gallery, your own website, writer magazines, writer platforms, competitions, magazine submissions, You Tube channel, publishers or production companies. E.g. BBC Writers Room, possible commissions, submissions and feedback. There are industry platforms out there that will give you industry feedback, why not test the water.

Also, you need to think about how you will showcase your final piece at the end of the year show.

Finally, how does this presentation reflects on your initial audience research?

MY FMP – FINAL PRODUCT

Here present your final FMP media production.

Project Evaluation This is a very important part of the project. Please pay attention to every question and make sure to provide relevant examples where appropriate to support your answers.

Critically evaluating your final media project against the agreed requirements and parameters. Answer following questions:

Introduce the project in your words List five strengths and five weaknesses in your final design/product Was there a theme for the design ideas? Can you describe it? Can you reference any

influences here? - Art movements, designers, media companies/campaigns, etc. What experiments and exploration did you do (what happened)? How did it affect development of your project? Comparing and contrasting with industry examples. Find a similar type of design

publication - place it next to your own - what comparisons/difference can you identify? What were the key areas of development in this project? - use your daily reflections to

help you with this. Review your proposal - what changed, what developments did you make, did you manage

to complete everything you set out to achieve? What did the client think of your concept? How did that make you feel? What could you do to adapt the work produced to improve and develop it? Is the final work appropriate for the needs of the project? Does it sufficiently answer your brief? Reflect on your pitch to the board: how did you feel about it before you started the full

project? Did it go better or worse than you expected? What was the feedback from your lecturer and any other reviewers? What do you think you could improve upon next time?
