Why Skidmore? There are as many reasons as there are students, but here are a few big ones.

A POWERFUL CURRICULUM page 6Publish your research, perform your masterpiece, learn from a genius, see the world for yourself. With our liberal arts curriculum, you’re empowered to study what speaks to you.   A PASSIONATE COMMUNITY page 16 No matter where you’re from, you’ll find your people and your place here. And no matter what you’re passionate about, you’ll find a professor, coach, friend or mentor to support it.  A PHENOMENAL CAMPUS page 28Take our outstanding residence options and award-winning dining, add idyllic campus greens, surround all that with innovative study spaces and include an amazing college town. Then, call it home.  A PIVOTAL CAREER NETWORK page 38 Whatever you’re meant to be or do, there are resources here to help you get there. Meet engaged alumni, on-campus career coaches, mentors and others.  A PLACE WHERE CREATIVE THOUGHT MATTERS Start the entrepreneurship club. Spark something in the lab. Sing, study and soar in ways you’ve never tried before. We have a different way of doing things here, and you’re invited to believe in creativity.

Why Skidmore? Let students tell you in their own words: S K I D M O. R E / W H Y

Study what speaks to you.

No matter what discipline you pursue, you’ll look at it from every angle, connecting different modes of thinking and seemingly unrelated ideas. Choose a major or majors, combine interests or forge your own path altogether.

“Skidmore has allowed me to pursue science and dance, where most other colleges would have forced me to choose between my two passions. I was also able to study abroad during my first year — a dream of mine — thanks to the London First-Year Experience. Skidmore truly has encouraged me to do it all!”

Meet your people. Find your place. No college year is more challenging, or more important, than the first. Students who connect in a meaningful way with faculty and peers and who identify a serious intellectual interest are more likely to succeed.

That’s why we developed the First-Year Experience (FYE) — a comprehensive welcome and introduction to academics and life at Skidmore that offers the right balance between challenge and support.

The First-Year Experience begins in the summer before your first year. This is when you’ll choose from more than 40 Scribner Seminars — small-group, interdisciplinary courses designed to help you explore ideas, challenge assumptions and think critically.

FYE IS YOUR OPPORTUNITY TO:

Explore deeply a topic or discipline that is of special interest to you.

Address the challenges of the transition from high school to college in an intentional, sustained way.

Make a lasting connection with your faculty adviser.

Make a meaningful connection with a more experienced Skidmore student — your peer mentor.

“Heading into my Scribner Seminar for the first time, I was skeptical it might be a lecture class with a cool title. Boy, was I wrong! The classroom became a place both to debrief with my peers about other courses and to try new things. It helped make the transition to college really smooth because I always felt welcome.”

— HILLARY GOLDSTEIN ’20Education and Human Physiological Sciences

“Mentoring is very important … I still recall my undergrad years when a professor took me aside and asked, ‘What do you think?’ He was truly curious. I felt like I had been treated seriously as a thinker. It was an ‘aha’ moment for me, one that I hope many students will experience in FYE.”

If there’s one thing that Skidmore students share, it’s the ability to bring creative thought to life in their own individual ways. Some bring this ability with them, and some discover it while they’re here. Either way, an appreciation for creative thought helps you develop a distinctive sense of self. You decide who you want to be — then go for it.

“I arrived at Skidmore from South Africa afraid I might not belong. Now, if I could float over campus and look down at my life here from 30,000 feet, I’d see amazing people from all over the world — Ecuador, Morocco, Connecticut, California and everywhere in between. So many of them I can call friends, family, even brothers and sisters because they fully appreciate and celebrate who I am.”

We just call it home.Saratoga Springs is a beautiful, bustling small city with nightlife, galleries, shops, parks, coffeehouses and restaurants. Dubbed the “Spa City,” it’s known for its focus on health, history and horses. Saratoga Springs is home to the nation’s oldest operating thoroughbred racecourse. The nearby Adirondacks, Berkshires and Green Mountains provide lots of recreational opportunities, including some of the best skiing and hiking in the Northeast. Plus, it’s only a three-hour drive to Boston, Montreal or New York City, and two hours to Lake Placid, home of the 1980 Winter Olympics.

It’s an ideal location for creative thought to thrive.

ZAZIE BEETZ ’13 is a prolific actress starring in Atlanta, Deadpool II and, more recently, Joker opposite Joaquin Phoenix. As an international student from Germany, Beetz explored acting and photography at Skidmore and continues to borrow upon those lessons. “With Skidmore’s education, I was able to honor another huge part of myself,” she explains. “I suppose that’s the beauty of a liberal arts school.” Going forward, she says, “I don’t want to just be pretty. I want to be ugly. I want to be bad and I want to be good. I want to be able to transform as I transform in my life.”Photo: Kevork Djansezian/NBC

SHEP MURRAY ’93 is a retail maverick and co-founder of Vineyard Vines, the lifestyle apparel line he founded with his brother Ian from a beachside pop-up, selling neckties from the trunk of a car. Today, the playful upscale brand is among the most popular in the country. The brothers’ unique business model eschews traditional marketing and distribution methods, which may explain why Vineyard Vines has thrived while much of the retail industry has been in chaos. Murray, whose goal has always been to be “a cross between Warren Buffett and Jimmy Buffett,” concurs, arguing that what’s happening in retail now is not about evolution. “It’s a revolution.”Photo: Jamel Toppin/The Forbes Collection/Contour RA
