COURSE A SENSORY

EXPERIENCE This interactive module will assist participants to

understand more about sensory therapy and the

importance of sustaining and maintaining sensory

stimulation appropriate to individual needs.

Participants will experience demonstrations of

effective engagement, and explore appropriate use of

sensory therapy tools and programming specific to the

setting.

Learning Outcomes:

• Understand the principles of sensory therapy

• Understand how and why we use sensory therapy

• Assess suitability of participants

• Select and use appropriate equipment and space

COLOUR MY

WORLD Colour My World is an interactive introduction to

setting up and running a therapeutic art program for

people with dementia. We explore the benefits of

using therapeutic art and the difference between this

type of art therapy and traditional arts and crafts

programs. Participants will explore projects suitable for

all ages and stages of dementia and take home fact

sheets on how to implement these activities in their

workplace.

Learning Outcomes:

• Understand why we use therapeutic art

• Understand the difference between art therapy,

therapeutic art and art and craft

• Considerations for setting up a therapeutic art

program

• Select appropriate projects for different ages and

stages of dementia

THE MAGIC OF

MUSIC In this interactive module, participants will learn about

how music affects the brain, mood and emotions.

Music is effective and useful for reminiscing, and to

enhance social interaction, creativity and imagination.

Participants will be inspired and gain confidence in

learning that you do not have to be musical yourself to

effectively incorporate music into the lifestyle of

people with dementia.

Learning Outcomes:

• Understand the health and emotional benefits of

music in dementia care

• Identify opportunities to incorporate music

• Select and use appropriate music and equipment

THE FACILITATOR. Deborah Treherne is a Dementia Educator with

Alzheimer’s Australia SA with a Diploma in Art Therapy

from Ikon Institute in SA and a Post Graduate Diploma

in Grief and Palliative Care Counselling from Adelaide

University.

She has over 20 years experience working in the areas

of lifestyle coordination, care supervision and has

extensive experience in Residential and Community

Care specialising in designing and facilitating art

therapy, sensory therapy and palliative care programs.

Deborah was the recipient of an excellence award for

Creative Ageing at the 2012 International Arts and

Health Conference, Fremantle Australia and is

passionate about creative engagement with people

with dementia and their carers.
