Effective graphic design requires more than a good eye.The best graphic designers create visual solutions thatpersuade and inspire. At Palm Beach State College, you’lllearn how to communicate ideas using color, typography,illustration, photography, animation and video—underthe guidance of expert faculty, learning in the mostcurrent and complete Macintosh-based education facilityin the area.

Palm Beach State offers both certificate and degreeprograms to fit your graphic design career goals,whether in print or electronic media:

Multimedia Arts or Web Design: These 12-month CollegeCredit Certificate programs are ideal for people inter-ested in entering the field quickly, or updating theirskills. All of the courses transfer directly into the A.A.S.or A.S. degrees in Graphic Design Technology.

Graphic Design: The two-year Graphic Design Technologyprogram offers Associate in Applied Science andAssociate in Science degrees and culminates in thecreation of a student portfolio, crucial for employment.

All students receive an excellent foundation in designfundamentals before taking electives in their specialty—with individual access to the latest design softwareevery step of the way. Local advertising art directors,marketing specialists and graphic designers are regularguest speakers, and a public exhibition of studentgraphic design work is held every year.

Your Career PathThere isn’t a business or organization that doesn’t usegraphic design to get its messages across. You maypursue a career as a graphic designer, art director,multimedia producer or web designer for an advertisingor marketing agency, publisher or a company’s in-housedesign department.

Your Career PathMany career paths start with an A.S. degree in Motion Picture ProductionTechnology. Some entry level positions include: audio/sound technician,utility production assistant, research assistant, set builder, video editorand production crew member. interior deThe design of interior spaces is much more thanan expression of taste—it’s a multifacetedprofession with the power to enhanceand influence how we function in ourhomes, businesses and public places.

In Palm Beach State’s two-year InteriorDesign Technology program, you’ll bepart of a dynamic educational communitywhere creativity, critical thinking, innovativeproblem solving and social responsibility areall explored. The program teaches the aestheticand technical principles essential to understandingresidential and commercial space planning anddesign. You’ll gain knowledge of building systems,health, safety and environmental issues, as well as howto analyze client needs and control costs. In a modern studioenvironment, students create scale drawings using the latestcomputer-aided drafting and design software and build displayboards using a large library of sample materials. Coursework alsocovers drafting and sketching, finishes, furnishings, kitchen andbath design, interior detailing, lighting, acoustics, building codesand business practices. Plus, many students participate in theCollege’s chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers,the profession’s largest association.

Your Career PathWhile interior designers are often self-employed, many also enjoy careers workingfor architectural firms, hotel and restaurant chains, furniture stores, residentialdevelopments, health care facilities and government agencies. The A.S. in InteriorDesign Technology meets the educational requirements of Florida’s Board ofArchitecture and Interior Design and the National Council for Interior DesignQualification Exam—making it a good choice if you plan to pursue licensure.

Ceramics is the art of three-dimensional clay sculpture. Starting with alump of clay, a ceramic artist creates works of art that are both figurativeand functional. As a ceramics student, you will learn the basic methodsand techniques of ceramics production, including handbuilding, wheelthrowing, glaze formulation and application, kiln stacking and firing.These courses will give you an excellent foundation for a bachelor’sdegree in ceramics.

Explore your interest in photography while pursuing your A.A. degree at PalmBeach State. The College offers courses in both digital and film photographicmethods, encompassing black and white, color, experimental and commercialphotography. Traditional film photography classes teach printing and darkroomprocedures, while digital classes teach the use of computer imaging tools tomanage digital files, restore photographs, create illustrations and prepareimages for publication.

ArchitectureBuild the foundation for a career in architecture at Palm Beach State. If yourgoal is a bachelor’s degree in architecture, doing your first two years in theCollege’s A.A. program gives you lots of options to fulfill prerequisites andexplore this career path. You’ll find relevant classes in sustainable constructionas well as transferrable courses in architectural design, theory and history.

Graduates are eligible to apply to architecture programs at NAAB (NationalArchitectural Accrediting Board) certified institutions. NAAB Florida schoolsinclude Florida Atlantic University, University of Miami and Florida A & MUniversity.

Architecture classes are offered on the Boca Raton campus.

Music is everywhere at Palm Beach State. The College’s A.A. students combinetheir general education studies with their desire to be performers, composers,music educators and music therapists.

Music courses range from music history and appreciation to jazz improvisationand music theory. Students may study privately or take classical and jazzperformance classes, either vocal or instrumental (string, woodwind, brass andpercussion). Classes are held in fully-equipped band and choral studios, andsoundproof practice rooms are available.

At Palm Beach State, both vocal and instrumental students have ampleopportunities to perform before community audiences—in chamber and jazzensembles, concerts, and with the College’s nationally recognized vocal group,“The Troubadours.”

In addition to several student recitals, a typical semester features lecture-recitals by faculty and local music professionals. National and internationalchamber ensembles and soloists also make frequent appearances.

Freshman and sophomore theatre majors at universities rarely have the chance toperform before live audiences. As a Palm Beach State A.A. student taking theatreclasses, you’ll have many opportunities to perform and direct, as well as study allaspects of theatre, including stagecraft and playwriting.

In a unique theatre classroom designed as a black box theatre, students selectand perform dramatic material, or write their own, guided by a faculty of theatreprofessionals. You can take part in the College’s mainstage productions of classicand contemporary plays or hone your off-the-cuff skills in an improvisationalgroup. The College boasts four theatres, ranging from the intimate Stage West tothe Duncan, Eissey and Dolly Hand theatres, plus an outdoor amphitheater—eacha showcase for professional and College productions.

Outside the classroom, the Palm Beach State College Players bring togetherstudents who have an interest in theatre. In addition, each year studentscompete in the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival, a nationaltheatre program involving more than 600 colleges and universities nationwide.
