creation of my double page

Creation of my Double Page
Flat PlanThis is my first idea of what my
double page spread may look like. I
have followed conventions of music
magazines in having a large title
taking up most of the first page and
having a range of images. The sell
line under the main heading will
basically sum up what the article will
be about
It is conventional for music
magazines such as “Xfactor
Magazine” and “Q” (my main
competitors) to a large image that
takes up most of the page on one
side. I chosen to split my first page
into 3 columns as this seemed to be
the average number after looking at
a selection of other magazines
aimed at my target audience.
My first thoughts on the second
page to my double page spread
were that I would only have one
column of text then a large image. I
decided that this would most
appropriate for my target audience
as they are more inclined to look at
pictures rather than spend a long
time reading a long article. I was
then going to have another image of
the artist beneath this column,
followed by another column of text.
The font for the title and
subheading/ sell line will be different
to that used in the feature to make it
stand out.
First Attempt
First Attempt
I have added text boxes added to where the text will go. This will be in columns as this is conventional of a music magazine. I found this out
by looking at features from my main competitors. I also makes the content much easier to read. I have also kept the black starry border for
consistency with the cover and theme/ genre of the magazine. I have also changed the layout from what I had originally planned. I instead
chose to have a large image of the artist on the left hand page along with two columns of text. I think that this works much better as it gives
the reader a chance to see the artist properly from the start of the feature. I have also decided that I would only have one image on the
second page as otherwise it might become too crowded. I decided that the colour scheme for my artists feature would be red, black and
white as these colours work well together and also the red has connotations of fire and hotness which goes well with my feature, genre and
target audience. I have chosen the images carefully to make sure they appeal to my target audience.
It is conventional of most magazines to feature one large image on the page of an interview. I have chosen to use a long
shot of my artist as this is unique and would appeal to my target audience. I have chosen to dress my artist in a way which
reflects her music and personality. I think that the leopard print reflects and helps represent her second name „Fierce‟ as its
feisty. It is also quite a fashionable print at the moment so fits in with the current trends and target audience well. I have
chosen the other image to reflect the artists more modest and normal side. The indirect mode of address also makes the
image much softer and makes her more kinder looking. Her body language is also much more relaxed and at ease. It is
conventional for a music magazine to have a posed image along with a more normal image.
First Attempt
Second Attempt
I think that the text on this page looks very
realistic for a music magazine. I really like
how the red and black works well together. I
would also like to find a way to make the text
fit around the image of the artist instead of just
going straight. I think that the sizing of the
text is good as it is not too small or big. The
heading is eye catching, and the sub heading
sums up the feature well.
Third Attempt
I thought that the text next to the
model was too straight so I decided to
shape it around the model. I think this
made the page look much more
conventional and professional.
Fourth Attempt
I will have two columns of text and in the space that is left I will have a quick
quiz which will ask the artist short general questions such as “Indian food or
Chinese food?”. This will be appealing to my target audience as they would
prefer to read shorter texts rather than long pieces. It would also enable the
reader to get to know a few facts about the artist from a distance without
having to read the article in depth. This is useful for those who perhaps don‟t
have time to read the whole feature or are just browsing through the
magazine in the shop.
Fifth Attempt
Here is my first attempt at the quick question and answer session with
Sasha Fierce. I think that the blue stands out too much from the rest of the
page which I don‟t want it to do as it is not the main part. The content of the
text box works well however I am not sure that I will keep the title Quick
Quiz as it is not really very conventional. People within my target audience
are also more inclined to want to read short pieces of text rather than long.
Having this question and answer box will also enable the reader to be able
to get to know the artist quickly without having to read the whole article if the
are short of time or just browsing in the shop. I also thought that there was
too large a gap in the centre of the page as most magazines do not have a
border that separates double page spreads (they just go around the outside
of the page). After taking this centre border out, I believe that the double
page is much more professional and conventional looking.
Sixth Attempt
I decided to change the colour of the
background to a pale shade of red
which seemed to work much better
as it was less in your face. It also
fits in with the colour scheme of
red, black and white. I also changed
the title from „Quick Quiz‟ to „60
Seconds with…. Sasha Fierce‟
which is much more conventional
and would be more likely to attract
my target audience. I changed the
Sasha Fierce to be slanted as all of
the text on the page is very straight
and it needed more variety in
positioning.
Seventh Attempt
On all of my other attempts I decided that
there was too much of a white space
before the Fierce. This made the title look
a bit bare and empty. To change this I
moved the tag line up which filled the gap
out and made the page much more
professional and conventional looking.
Eighth Attempt
There were too large a
white space around
the images, so I
decided to add
comments from the
interview. These
comments were more
important ones which
would grab the readers
attention if they were
just looking at the
images and reading
the caption.
Ninth Attempt
I still was uncertain about the colour of the text box so I
experimented with the colouring to try and find a suitable
colour. I decided to go with a slightly darker shade of red/
orange than before so that it fits in with the rest of the
page‟s colour scheme and also the artists hair. I also
changed the size of the image captions so that they are
larger than the feature text and stand out more.
Final Double Page Spread
I am very happy in the way my double page has turned out. I think that it looks professional, conventional and most
importantly I believe that my target audience would find it appealing. My next step is to gather some feedback from my
target audience. This will help me with any changes that I need in order to make my magazine better.
