Creating Resilient Solutions to Water Needs

The International Desalination Association is pleased to announce its third Action4Good in-ternational conference titled "Creating Resilient Solutions to Water Needs", held at the Grand Miramare Hotel, located on the beautiful Corni-che of Santa Margherita Portofino, Italy from May 12-14, 2019. This conference is held under the patronage of the City of Genoa and is developed in coopera-tion with the Rotary Club of La Spezia and Lu-nigiana, as well as the IDA Sustainable Water Resources Foundation (IDA SWRF). Part of the proceeds of the event are earmarked to sup-port a water-related humanitarian project and the IDA SWRF. With the support of our Affiliates and coopera-tion agreements with organizations like the UN FAO, Global Clean Water Desalination Allian-ce, GreeningTheIslands.net, and the Global Solar Council, the conference technical pro-gram will focus on energy and environmental issues related to desalination and water reuse projects, and will assess progress since the 2016 IDA International Energy & Environment Forum held in Miami. Additionally, the program will underscore the importance of the Water-Energy-Food Nexus and the increasing role that non - conventional water supply technologies play in meeting freshwater, health, and economic development needs for today and for future generations.

IDA supports an H20-C02 target and advocates the critical role energy efficiency, renewable energy, and minimization of environmental im-pact in desalination and water reuse systems play in reaching this aim. Share your experiences and ideas and help us develop the tools to ensure that growth in the desalination and water reuse industry goes hand in hand with social responsibility. We look forward to welcoming you to Santa Margherita, Portofino and sharing in action4- good! Sincerely, Shannon McCarthy IDA Secretary General

Technical Program Committee

Water is a key element in the overall UN Sus-tainable Development Goals - unfortunately, as time goes by and as world population increases the available renewable water per capita is sharply decreasing and presents critical cha-llenges. This obviously has an important impact, not only for the basic satisfaction of human survival needs but also as on the ecosystem and biosp-here, that, with climate change and limited supply of water, are going to be drastically alte-red. Along with the decrease in quantity of rene-wable water sources, there is a constant in-crease of waste water which is now seen as a liability to rid of at the lowest possible cost.

In reality, in the same way as waste needs to become the technological and biological nu-trient store for the future, also waste water needs to become the new water source for the future. The aim of this conference is to address the need to develop resilient solutions for water schemes which will be upcycling the water con-sumed in the techno sphere and by domestic anthropogenic uses to the purpose of generating new water. In this functional pattern, where biosphere wa-ter abstraction is minimized, nature can reple-nish the natural water resources leading back to sustainable life. Sincerely,

Dr. Corrado Sommariva IDA Director, Conference Co-Chair

Mr. Edoardo Garibotti Conference Co-Chair

Conference Theme

Current developments in the water industry at large require a more judicious use of water – from the effects of climate change to growing awareness of water scarcity challenges and the increased focus on sustainability. Desalination is unique in its ability to deliver a new, reliable and sustainable source of water, and this ex-tends beyond its traditional municipal market into applications of desalination and desalina-tion technologies in the industrial realm. Conse-quently, there is a growing commitment to-wards innovative desalination solutions. New horizons are opening every day. As time goes by, desalination will become increasingly im-portant as a solution for other industry sectors where large volumes of water is required or where desalination technologies can enable recycling and reuse of this precious resource. Desalination and wastewater recycling / reuse are now benefitting from rapid advances in te-chnology, and our industry continues to push for further solutions to overcome technological barriers. Quite logically, therefore, innovation is the recurrent theme in the conference. This conference aims to explore the market potential of innovative desalination solutions in the tradi-tional municipal infrastructure market that will steadily drive us towards a sustainable water supply. In addition, the technical program will showcase examples of desalination and sea-

water / wastewater treatment cases where the potential for optimization and applications of desalination technology can offer more sustai-nable water solutions to industries such as oil and gas as well as another rapidly growing sec-tor, mining. While the first session of the confe-rence explores some of the future techniques that may expand the existing portfolio of proce-sses for water production, innovation returns as an important theme in almost each session of the conference. Innovation is a key to impro-ving sustainability of water solutions, reducing the energy and carbon footprint of desalination, and decreasing the cost of water. Continuing in the tradition of IDA’s Humanitarian Outreach Program that was introduced in 2011, space has been allocated in the technical program to address emergency solutions that can enable a supply of potable water to areas affected by humanitarian catastrophes. We encourage members of the desalination community to par-ticipate in this important event, and we seek papers in line with the theme and paper topics outlined as follows.

We encourage members of the desalination community to participate in this important event, and we seek papers in line with the theme and paper topics outlined as follows.

IDA invites new and original papers in the following subject areas reflecting the achievements and future challenges in the field of desalination and water reuse. • Disruptive Technologies to Secure Renewable Water Resources • Opening Markets for Infrastructure: Creating Innovative Infrastructure to Ensure Water Sustainability • Introduction on Circular Economy for Water and Waste Water • Renewable Energy for Desalination: Lowering Cost and Carbon Footprint • Sustainable Water Solutions for the Oil and Gas Industry • Emergency Solutions to Water Scarcity and Crisis

Conference will provide a forum to discuss

• Innovative solutions to achieve more sustainable water production • New processes and advances in water desalination as well as initiatives for energy optimizati-

on and energy savings in existing installation • Defining initiatives whereby advances in desalination can provide optimal solutions to infras-

tructure markets • Advance water reuse as a critical issue in managing water resources • The use of desalination pretreatment and water reuse techniques in oil and gas markets • New desalination and water-related technologies applied to oil and gas and the potential for

future optimization and development • Potentials for developing new solutions for both municipal and industry markets • The latest developments and policies required to enable a more rigorous environmental monitoring of desalination technologies • The renewable energy coupling to desalination processes, ideas and solutions • Desalination for disaster relief , emergency and remote locations

Paper Topics

Selection Process

All Extended abstracts will be initially reviewed for content and relevance to the theme of the Confe-rence. Accepted abstracts will be allocated to a related session and authors will be required to sub-mit a PowerPoint (subject to approval) for onsite presentation. Submissions will be accepted on the basis of technical merit.

Submissions

To be considered for placement in the program, you must submit an extended abstract through the online Paper Management System accesible on the IDA website. Extended abstracts will be accep-ted no later than February 28, 2019. Only abstracts submitted via [email protected] will be considered. You may also direct your questions to [email protected] and be sure to title the subject line of your inquiry “Santa Margherita 2019 Conference”.

Speaker Requirements

Presenters will be required to provide a photo and brief biography, three-page Extended Abstract, and a PPT version of the presentation. Onsite PowerPoints will be converted (by IDA) to PDF, and distributed to Conference attendees. Registration fees are paid by the speaker and a participant agreement will be required. More details are available on the IDA website in August 2018.

Abstract Content

An Extended Abstract is a research paper whose ideas and significance can be understood in a single reading. The Extended Abstract should state the paper’s purpose, methods, new results and conclusions, if available. It should also contain references, comparisons to related work, proofs of key theorems and other details expected in a research paper. It may include tables, figures, equations or non-standard abbreviations. The abstract should be written in English.
