Common Core Standards for Mathematical Practice

Make sense of non typical problems and persist in solving them: Modeling real life problems with mathematics

Employ appropriate tools; K-12 students are “digital natives” while their teachers are “digital immigrants”

Why Use App’s in the Math Classroom

Android and iOS devices: Small, light and convenient; can easily be moved around

Access the abundant and ever growing resources of knowledge on the Internet

Read, write, draw, take pictures and record videos, watch videos, take notes via speech recognition software without typing or writing

Numerous other advantages…

Uses of the Tablet

Doing the task “now” Reinforcement of math concepts Practicing basic facts through “cool” and “fun” apps Whole group as well as differentiated instruction Posting teacher-created math videos Games (to preview or reinforce skills) Exit tickets/quick assessments Ease of collecting data

Uses of the Tablet

Access to “game like” digital learning environments that are more engaging and interactive

Communicate and collaborate easily Teachers become facilitators; more individualized

time per student; more “teachable moments” Various ways to use the mobile device besides only

apps; sky is the limit to your imagination…

Challenges of Using Apps in the Classroom

However: Lesson plans are needed to accommodate such technologies.

A certain level of comfort of use is needed at and outside school: Learners: Should be comfortable using the mobile technology Teachers: Should be comfortable to train the students and

intervene whenever needed Parents: Cost of the mobile device, basic knowledge of how to

use the device so as to monitor the activities of children Administrators: Technology, maintenance, personnel and

professional training costs; restriction of use to scholarly purposes

Tips and Tricks to Overcome the Challenges 18

• Specify rules from the beginning. • Make both students and parents sign a contract prior to usage. • Make the iOS or Android tablets easily accessible – this is a gradual process. • Learn and teach the basics to use the mobile device. • Recharge all devices periodically (typically once every week). • Install all apps to all devices. • Share your apps with parents. • Update apps every 2 weeks. • Search under App store to see what has been purchased. • Deleting apps is easy; students should be accountable and not allowed to delete

apps. • Beware of the lite versions. You don’t always get the extra features. • There are thousands of apps available, do your homework before you use your

limited budget to purchase any apps.
