Creating Engaging Content In TheFace Of Readability Formulas

MJ Cobb

While our team consciously creates content that works regionally and culturallywe also concentrate on centering our writing in languaging practices thatensure a respectful encouraging and empowering relationship Our writing

simultaneously conveys ideas without demeaning either those who struggle toread or those who have the privilege of being highly educated Essentially wemust always break down and analyze at a highly detailed level both what wesay and how we say it We also have to factor in that our clients only know us digitally mostly via theirsmartphones which means there is an absence of many of the nonverbal cuespeople typically use to create and nurture relationships such as eye contacttone pitch volume speed of our voices facial expressions and hand gestures To accomplish our goal of writing in a way that is both accessible and engagingone of the factors we pay close attention to is what is known in the academicworld as readability Essentially readability is the ease in which a passage canbe read correlated with a grade level in school So if a passage could easilybe understood by the average 6th grader it is deemed to have a 6thshygradereading level Sounds simple enough right Unfortunately like many conceptswhen we start talking readability we quickly find there are as many opinionsabout what it is and how it should be determined as there are people There are dozens of readability formulas and most work similarly Mostformulas run a simple measurement of the total number of words the numberof words in each sentence and the number of syllables in a sentence Fromthere the formula determines a grade level at which the passage should beeasily understood For example a passage that is assessed at a 5thshygradereading level should be readershyfriendly for anyone who has mastered reading ata 5thshygrade level Sounds simple enough right What could be the problemWell despite the fact that most online apps allow the user to run a diagnosticon as little as a single sentence most formulas require samples that contain aminimum of 100 continuous words to ldquoworkrdquo Additionally the majority ofreadability formulas are actually designed for optimal use with a passagecontaining a minimum of 300 words This may be suitable for written work thatcan easily fit these length requirements but much of our writing is significantlyshorter and conversational in nature

The most significant factor readability formulas ignore is the reader experienceReader experience is all the prior knowledge individual experiences skills andperceptions a reader brings to the reading Cultural and regional influencessuch as slang colloquialisms and dialectal derivations that all influence areaderrsquos ability to comprehend and attach meaning to new information are alsonot considered by these formulas To add to the conundrum of accurately assessing readability the readability of aparticular passage may vary depending on the app being used For examplewhen we plugged in the exact same 300+ word passage into three differentonline apps that all use the different grade levels the range of levels reportedvaried by more than an entire grade Therersquos more Because most formulas focus on simple counting of words andsyllables it is crucial to carefully note the individual word choices in any giventext For example in a recent lesson we created around working with recipeswe focused on teaching our clients how to use simple ingredient substitutionsBecause substitutions is a multisyllabic word despite the fact that in the contextit was being used it was also a common word its use raised the overallreadability of the lesson by an entire grade level So whatrsquos the bottom line It is crucial to the clients we are committed toserving that we never use these formulas in isolation We must remember thatreadability is subjective and available measures merely provide a ldquoballparkrdquoestimate We must ensure that the entire team is utilizing and applying thesame apps consistently Most importantly we must take the time to dig in anduse our own powers of observation to analyze the individual word choices thatmay be inspiring a false sense of imbalance To read the full article check out our online publication Oh Behave byclicking here
