CREATING DRAWINGS FOR SP PARTS

The purpose of this course is to establish the proper steps for the design/detailing team to create drawings for SP work where CAD files are not provided.

To begin with, you should have been provided with a Purchase Order and a quote from Processing. Sometimes, a quote may not be provided. In this case, the requirements must be obtained from the estimator.

Next, the part number to be used for the part needs to be determined. If a part number is provided by the customer, use this number (a generic description such as “PLATE1” does not qualify as a part number). If this is just a one-time run and it is not anticipated that the part will be made in the future, a generic description such as “PLATE1” may be used. If there is a possibility that the part might be made again, and the customer does not provide a part number, obtain one from the individual responsible for assigning them.

The steps to create SP drawings are determined by three factors. Sometimes the customer provides prints that we can use to fabricate from. Other times, they only provide rough sketches drawn out by hand. Customers may also provide a sample part which they wish to be replicated or altered in some way. Select a button below to view one of these scenarios.

USABLE CUSTOMER PRINTS ARE PROVIDED

ROUGH HAND SKETCHES ARE PROVIDED

When customer prints or drawings are good enough to send to the shop floor, drawings only need to be made for parts getting plasma or laser cut, and parts that are to be formed.

Is This Print Usable? A customer drawing or print is determined as “usable” if it is legible, dimensioned, and toleranced.

Create Process Drawings for all parts that require a drawing to be made. See the Premier print standard for Process Drawings for more detail on creating them.

When complete, send cut files by email to the processor. Give the processor paper copies of the customer prints that will be used, paper copies of formed part Process Drawings (copies of flat part Process Drawings are not needed in most cases), along with the P.O.

After you’ve sent everything off to the processor, move the Process Drawings you’ve created to the G:\Prints-Drawings\Autocad\Custom directory within the appropriate customer folder.

When rough hand sketches are all that is provided, full prints must be created.

Once the prints are complete, they should be looked over by the estimator or another qualified individual to make sure they accurately match the sketches and fulfill the requests of the customer.

If the customer does not provide tolerance requirements, or there are any items where the customer’s expectations are not perfectly clear, it may be necessary to send the prints to the customer for approval. The prints should be checked first to make sure they conform to Premier drawing standards, and are acceptable to send to a customer to review. The prints should then be sent to the estimator in PDF form to forward to the customer for approval.

When sample parts are provided, they must be “reverse-engineered”. Measurements must be taken using the most accurate methods available.

It is the recommended practice to send prints created from sample parts to the customer for approval. The prints should be checked first to make sure they conform to Premier drawing standards, and are acceptable to send to a customer to review. The prints should then be sent to the estimator in PDF form to forward to the customer for approval.
