Goals for Our Time together Think: How do we leverage our position as
school administrators to increase opportunities for all students and educators to learn?
Engage: Emotional, Physical, Cognitive Inform: Explore designs that have the
potential to improve measurable learner outcomes.

What do our kids deserve? What does our world need? The resources we allocate to education
say much about our priorities. The design we engage in for all of our
learners also says much about ourpriorities.
We have the power to utilize design as a powerful tool to engender a rich opportunity to learn for each of our kids.
12
How can design engender these things?
4 C’s = http://www.nea.org/assets/docs/A-Guide-to-Four-Cs.pdf
Critical Thinking – use various types of reasoning (inductive, deductive, etc.) as appropriate to the situation
Communication – Articulate thoughts and ideas effectively using oral, written, and nonverbal communication skills in a variety of forms and contexts
Collaboration – Assume shared responsibility for collaborative work, and value the individual contributions made by each team member
Creativity – Develop, implement, and communicate new ideas to others effectively

The Seven C’s of Effective Teaching
7 C’s {Ronald Ferguson} http://www.agi.harvard.edu/index.php
Caring about Students Captivating Students Conferring with students Controlling behavior Clarifying lessons Challenging students Consolidating knowledge

Speed Dating Of the 4 C’s (Critical Thinking, Communication,
Collaboration, or Creativity) – which is most important to you? Why?
Do the classrooms in your school facilitate development of the 4 C’S? How?

What do companies desire? Autodesk had revenue of 2.5 Billion dollars
in 2014. Autodesk has a presence in SE Michigan. I have worked with Autodesk to discover what their needs are from our school system.• The ability for people to advocate for their
ideas.• The ability to be maturely direct.

Automotive An existence proof of our collective
future… What will our students do What aspect of the 4 c’s did you notice?
(Critical Thinking, Communication, Collaboration, Creativity)

How Do You Work? Turn to a near neighbor and describe your
office work space.
How have you personalized your environment?
Does your environment enhance your work?
What connection, if any, can you make between how you have designed your work space and how you have designed the classroom work spaces in your district?
19
Creating a Sense of Place Our obligation as school leaders is to
create a sense of place that develops/embraces the cognitive, social, emotional, and physical well being of our students, teachers, and parents.
20
Creating Spaces that Embrace and Cultivate…
Critical Thinking – Use Various Types of Reasoning Communication – Articulate Thoughts and Ideas Effectively
Using Oral , Written, and Nonverbal Communications Collaboration – Shared Responsibility for Collaborative Work Creativity – Develop/Implement/Communicate New Ideas Caring – Nurturing Productive Relationships Controlling – Promoting Cooperation and Peer Support Clarifying – Making Success Seem Feasible Challenging – Pressing for Effort and Rigor Captivating – Making Learning Interesting/Relevant Conferring – Eliciting Students’ Feedback Consolidating – Connecting/Integrating Ideas to
Support Learning

How do the previous examples……capture your recent learning?
…address the 4 C’s?
…help engage the 7 C’s of Ronald Ferguson?

Physical Space Impacts Measurable Learner Outcomes
30
Critical Thinking, Communication, Collaboration, and Creativity are critical to success in our world…
…facilitating these skills will enhance learner outcomes that will engender success.
Social Justice, Voice, Engagement, and DesignSocial Justice in a school setting = The cultivation, celebration, and use of student voice

How can design impact measurable learner outcomes?
How can you better work with schools to advance Social Justice?
Is it possible to utilize existing structures to create a sense of “place” that honors student voice?
How does budget impact design?
Personal Reflection Written Reflection = Metacognition What can you do to elevate anything we
discussed in this afternoon’s presentation? What will you do to enact what you can
do?
