Created by: Jordan Bauer, Andrew Dumask and Aaron Johnson Faculty Sponsor: Dr. Michael Bessert University of Wisconsin-Stout Introduction Surveying fishermen is a good way to estimate the population of Lake Sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens) By electro-fishing you can get a better estimate of the populations of fishes Sturgeon were over harvest almost to extinction in the early 1900’s and are only now showing signs of rising abundance in population In 1963 there was a large population of Shovelnose Sturgeon below the dam but when measured again in 1999 only one was found We feel like Sturgeon are on the rise again based on our surveying and would like to use Electro-fishing survey to determine a better estimate of Sturgeon Lake Sturgeon Estimated Populations Below Red Cedar Dam Acknowledgements We would like to thank Dr. Michael Bessert and Marty Engel of the Wisconsin DNR for helping us through the survey process Results Discussion Methods We created a survey that would focus on the Sturgeon caught or witnessed being caught below the Red Cedar Dam in conjunction with Marty Engel of the Wisconsin DNR We asked questions such as: did you or someone else catch the fish, how large, what location of the river did you catch it, what time of day and what time of year, what kind of bait was used and how many Lake Sturgeon have they caught in the past few years We surveyed fishermen for one month several times per week on a randomized schedule Electro-fishing Shocking fish to the surface and netting them to estimate rivers populations of species Interesting facts: The Largest Lake Sturgeon caught on record in Wisconsin is over 240lbs and 87.5 inches long caught in the Wolf River by net compared to Minnesota at a mere 94lbs It is estimated that the fish was over 125 years old! Previous Sampling The past three times the DNR has sampled via electro-fishing the Lower Red Cedar River they have caught no Lake Sturgeon Shovelnose Sturgeon 40 years ago used to be the most common gamefish below the Red Cedar dam and the survey in 1999 only recorded one The average amount of Lake Sturgeon caught or witnessed being caught per person that we surveyed was 3.6 These results of fish caught are spanned over the last five years Several fishermen caught multiple Lake Sturgeon We calculated standard error for both graphs by using Ɵ /√n The mean size Lake Sturgeon caught was 54.6 inches The range in length caught was 18 to 72 inches Other Survey Results The most common bait used were crawlers and minnows, one person caught a Lake Sturgeon on chicken liver Lake Sturgeon were caught in all seasons but most commonly during the summer months By interviewing fishermen we conclude that if you put the time fishing for game fish you eventually catch several Sturgeon accidentally All of the fishermen we talked to were fishing for something other than Sturgeon The mean size from our results are derived from estimated Sturgeon lengths by fishermen By electro-fishing we hope to have a more accurate representation of the true size and population Further data collection and management will help rehabilitation efforts for the Red Cedar River
